question on upping

even though i have played diablo on and off for the last few years.....i never did get too involved with the upping of items......i have an east ladder barb with an atma's armour and a shartooth armour,, am i able to up these and how is it done.........i admit i get a little confused reading the recipes for excpeption/elite, rare...sorry if it is too noob of a question..............

only rares and uniques can be upped. no runewords or white/grey items.
Look in arreat summit (http://battle.net/diablo2exp/items/cube.shtml) for the formula; its near the bottom.

atma's can be upd (1 Tal Rune + 1 Shael Rune + 1 Perfect Diamond + Normal Unique Armor = Exceptional Version of Armor (http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/cube.shtml)

if your sharktooth armor is unique (Toothrow or Rockfleece) or rare (will have a yellow name) it can be upd also
