Laughter in the desert

I've just started Nightmare Act II, and stepped outside the city of Lut Gholein to make some kills so i could raise some skeletons for my necro. After killing a named that was pretty close to the gate, I heard laughter in the desert, and it repeated a number of times.

Does this signal some event of some kind? I sure spent a lot of time in the desert in Normal, and never heard that laughter before.

Some of the monsters might make sounds that sound like a laughter.

I figured out what it was. How embarassing! It's the sound of my Act 2 might merc casting his aura. It has an echo-y sound when it's cast and sounded like some weird disembodied laughter to me. :P
