View Full Version : Lightning Immunities and Infinity
Last night while playing a pub game , this guy comes in and offers my Lightning Sorce a Light Facet for free. Though I'm usually suspicious of people by nature I listened to what he had to say.
He said D2 was taking over his life and he's quitting. He then asked me what weapon my act 2 nightmare merc was using. I had a 4os Eth Insight. I was kinda attached to this weapon as you can imagine not a bad item for self found. Anyways he says to put it up for trade and in return he puts up a 4 os Eth CV Infinity. Kinda like hitting the jackpot ya know?
Now for my question. I dont really understand the effects of conviction but for my normal mf spots Countess/Arcane/Shenk/Pindle My CH is cutting through the mobs like a hot knife through cold butter. I've stayed away from The Ancient Tunnels and Flayer Dungeon due to the lightning immunes.
Will this Infinity break the lightning immunities and my level 34 CH?
Can anyone clarify how that works better?

I don't know what you mean with CH (it's probably some lightsorc build, I guess), but yes, the conviction aura of Infinity will break lightning immunity. However, it works at only 1/5 effect then and there are a few monsters which have a too strong immunity (which depends on how far beyond 100% the immunity is). The -lightning res from that runeword doesn't affect immunes (if conviction hasn't broken it) and it will only be applied to the merc's attacks.
It's essential that you have a few sources of -lightning res in adition (like Tal's set, facets and the like) because the formerly immune monstrers will still be highly resistant, so each bit of -lightning res will be very useful. There's obviously a big difference between a 99% resistant enemy and one with 90% - you will deal 10 times as much damage then.

Perhaps Tazzaxe meant Chain Lightning (CL) or Charged Bolts (CB), but I can't be sure.
I got my own Infinity recently (wasn't as lucky as you were and worked hard for it... don't worry, I'm not bitter but am happy for you), and, well, I had no idea how powerful level 12 Conviction is until I had the weapon. Infinity is insane for helping me kill monsters.
Now I just have to find a way to stay alive better.

Don't quite understand this for some reason. Would this mean if I get two lightning facets, one with -4% and one with -5% lightning resistances, I would be dealing 10 times more damage?
Thanks,
Victor Ly
thats very lucky congrats.
infnity works especialy well with light sorcs because most LI's can be broken.

What I meant to say was that then you got down lightning res to 99% with Infinity, a 10,000 damage lightning attack will deal 100 damage, but if you can reduce the lightning resistance by another 9%, e.g. with two facets, it will be 1000 damage instead.
-res is far more important than +dmg for a lightning or fire sorc because +dmg just gets added to the mastery damage which is probably quite huge already, so it won't make much of a difference. For a cold sorc it's the other way around, as cold mastery already reduces res a lot. In fact, the bonuses from e.g. Eschuta's are next to irrelevant. That's one of the often overlooked mods from e.g. Tal's set. It adds -res respictively +dmg to the tree where mastery adds to the other type.

Ah, okay, thank you very much for the clarification!
Yes I meant chain lightning and after testing it in a few places it is very effective in act 1 hell. I do quite a few countess runs. What it does to the non immunes shouldnt be legal lol.
Thankyou for the responses I hadnt found a clear post or explanation on the subject.

I have this vision that -ER is similar to off-weapon damage: the more damage you have to more effective the other is, but the more of the other you have then the more damage would do best. Basically, balance out the main damage and -ER/off-weapon damage. Is this pretty much accurate?
