Oh man, was I ever treated to a tasty tidbit upon waking up. Apparently, the 5th ranked Michigan Wolverines couldn't handle facing the not-even-Div-1 Appalachian State Mountaineers. They lost 36-34, and had their last second Field Goal blocked.

Ah, college football.

You slept through one helluva game...

This just in (from a couple of my App friends): After-party hasn't stopped yet.

The upset of the year already. Gonna be hard to top this one.

Yeah so I've read. I worked til 8am though, and I didn't wake up to watch the early games for the simple reason they all looked like blowouts on paper. Whoops.

At what point does a division 1AA team get considered for moving up to division 1A?

It's not like Michigan played super super bad. (Henne sucks... I've muttered that every game for the last 3 years) And despite how well we did most of last season, I never felt that we had much of a passing defense... and wham, that's what did Michigan in with Ohio and the bowl game.
:hide:

Watching the game was a great thrill... and a heck of a lot like a replay (ignoring rankings) of the 2006 Ohio state game.

I am pretty sure it has to do with enrollment numbers. And the NCAA puts together groups who vote on these things. It does happen though, Troy used to be 1AA only a few years ago, and now they're 1A.

As well as Florida Atlantic, Florida International, and now Western Kentucky.

Well, I hope the Pistons do well, because college football just got screwed over for me.

Ah well, way to go Loyd. Losing your job in the first game of the season is pretty impressive.

Ahhhhhh, tgfcfb.

(thank god for college football)

Great game. I watched the replay with AeroJonesy and we laughed our butts off.

That we did. Michigan's offense actually looked pretty decent, but their defense looked bad.

I told Toader that Michigan has never been able to handle mobile quarterbacks. And yes, we did laugh.

The only draw back is that this may lead to Lloyd Carr being fired. :( He always sucks against OSU, and I don't want him to leave.

Lloyd must go, from U of M fan's standpoint.

He's the kind of coach that always has a solid team, but he can never beat teams with speedy defenses or mobile quarterbacks. His old school style will consistently get 1-2 loss season, but only rarely will it win a national championship in this day and age. And that -- as well as beating Ohio State -- is what Michigan football needs to get back in view.

It's all the same reasons Ohio State fans wanted to get rid of Cooper.

the best part is that Michigan had to PAY App St $400k to come in and beat them. So basically they bought a loss, because they thought Hawaii would have been to hard for a warm up game.

except OSU was never really a contender for anything with Cooper. At least Lloyd gets a big ten championship every now and again.

I think there was some talk of the Defense Coordinator, Ron English, being Lloyd's replacement, prior to the start of the season. I sure hope not. His defense sucks, in my opinion. (and for some reason he's touted as an excellent defense coach or whatnot)

Just when everyone was calming down from last year's Wake Forest victory, this happens.

Save for one difference, last year Winston was worked up, this year Boone won't calm down!

I agree with you, Gertlex. U of M's defense is what hurt us the past couple years.

wait a minute, last year Michigan had one of the best defenses in college football, until the very odd OSU/UM points bonanza and then the Rose Bowl, before that they were stingiest defense in the Big11

Last years defense always seemed to be weak when it came to defense against passing, but I'm no expert. It got more noticeable as the season went on. I think it was the game before Ohio where Michigan played a not-so-prestigious team and had noticeable problems. However, the defense was certainly, overall, seemed better than what we saw last weekend (mainly the first half).
