Hey Everyone,
It's been years since I've played D2. I've decided to give it another whirl. I used to have a couple of 85+ hardcore expansion characters. This time around, I thought I would go back to the basics and stick with classic.
I was wondering if you can offer any advice in terms of a good starter character. I'm not necessarily looking for someone who can run through hell, but I wouldn't mind being able to MF a little bit in nightmare to get me off my feet.
Any suggestions?
and also ... I used to use maphack to help me find my way around. I'm seriously ok without it, but I'm curious if I would be able to use it without being banned.
Thanks a lot!

No maphack, just don't use it.
Edit: Or any other hacks ethier.

If you MF a bit, you will find you don't need maphack. maphack is more for the mentally chalenged individual who cannot differentiate one level pattern from another. I would suggest progressquest to any maphack user.
As for being banned, well, Blizzard still does their logging and banning rounds. In which case you would stand to lose your CD key(s), your accounts on which you played with maphack, any accounts made with that CD key and last, but certainly not least, your account here. Even mentioning the intent to use already puts your account here at risk, since I read somewhere the mod is very strict about most things, especially cheats.

Thanks for the warm welcome :wink3:
Maphack wasn't my primary concern. Back when I played heavily (around 1.07ish) everyone used it. I was just curious if the problem is still as rampant as it once was or if Blizzard has managed to clean things up a bit.
My primary goal here was to get suggestions on a character that is not too item dependent (since I literally have nothing) and might be able to eventually MF in nightmare in order to find some decent items.
Any help is appreciated, thanks!
If you are interested in nm mf I would suggest an orb sorc, very few immunes, not gear dependant for damage able to get around fairly fast, even without lots of fcr.
you could use a fcr wand with res, they have a high spawn chance. and a 3 soc shield.
You will probably find a shard pretty quickly doing nm meph or diablo runs.
I think that the best would be cs runs.
In response to your question about mh. lots of people have it.

I heard that orb got a substantial nerf in 1.10. I'm not sure, but I think it might have something to do with the fact that it has fewer synergies than something like blizzard. Would an orb sorc still be effective enough to run NM meph?

read the build guide on the mephy glitcher. orb is effective at running hell mephy...
you'll want magefist/shard/twitch to start out with, and these can all be had/found in nm cows, and/or the nm cs. fairly easily enough.
Orb slaughters nm CS easily even in a many player game.

Yeah, Orb sorc is probably your best bet for NM MFing. Good luck with your new char(s)
