View Full Version : Act IV: The Cathedral Of The Damned

There are many folks who have no idea what the Cathedral of the Damned is because they have never seen it.
It's an "island" that only occasionally spawns in the middle of a "lake" in Act IV, the City of the Damned and it's accessible only by a single bridge.
I was running my new Strafezon through Normal and the Cathedral spawned...only the third time I've seen the Cathedral in...what, 7 years of playing?
For those who don't mind losing their current map, the seed is Seed removed - Do not post map seeds for any reason. - Cat.
Be sure to check out the stained glass windows...they bite back.

uhh... where's the screenshot(s) for those unwilling to use the -seed command?
Im not unwilling, but how do I use the seed command? Id like to see it.
Edit: Is changing the seed a frowned on practice? Ive never seen anything on it.
Edit: I made my statement more understandable.
I've seen it spawn twice in the last three days. I like shattering all the windows. :) Yeah it's pretty sweet.

I'm not unwilling, but how do i use the seed command? I'd like to see it.
1. put "-seed <XXXXXX>" in the shortcut you use to start the D2 application.
2. start d2, choose your character & difficulty
3. once the character finishes loading, immediately save & exit
4. Completely close the D2 application
5. remove the "-seed xxx" argument from the D2 shortcut
6. restart D2 with the same char/difficulty.
Note: If you skip steps 3-5, you will die a horrible death in real life. Oh yeah, you might be flamed by the rest of the SPF too. :undecided:
Edit: Made smilts' quote readable
Ugh, got curious and ended up doing 47 runs looking for this... Nothing...
Oh well I'll look more tomorrow, would someone please provide a screenshot of the entrance to the place?
I just can't imagine that I've never seen this place in all my years of Diablo...

Oh wow, I've seen it...
I've seen it couple of times and I think it was bit more common before the expansion came out. Used to see it quite often, now that I think about it.

More likely, it was seen more often because people ran Act IV back in the good old days. I had completely forgotten about it. Thanks for the memory boost!

Here's a pretty picture. (http://www.shokimages.com/viewer.php?file=xlhytngydom2yhrjkhjn.jpg) The mini map shows the bridge access. The windows are called "An Evil Force". The designers might have been a bit more creative.
But here's something I've only seen once (http://www.shokimages.com/viewer.php?file=mknyyjjmtdomfyhmrw3j.jpg), and likely never will again.

LOL. I've only seen the cathedral once but I think almost all of the windows were out of place. Whoever they used to build it was a bit off in the measurements.
And yeah, breaking all the "evil forces" was a lot of fun and actually worth some XP.
I've seen it once, too. Kinda spooky a place, that one. I wonder if there are any other similar things in the game.

Here's the image that goes with the map seed in the original post.
The Cathedral Of The Damned (http://old-dude.com/diablo2/images/D2-CATHEDRAL.jpg)
The City of the Damned WP is barely visible bottom center in the on screen map.
I apologize for the dark colors of the image but that's the way it appears in game. My merc kept knocking out the windows so I had to snap the screenie pretty quickly.

I HAVE seen that before. I never thought much of it, just thought it was another feature of the landscape. And you people are really gonna hate me, but the first char I ever got to Act IV, I was running him around City of the Damned looking for the stairs to River of Flame...he found the Cathedral. Heck 2 or 3 other chars I made found it too. I remember it because of the windows that could be broken.

Just when I thought I was accumulating a wealth of knowledge about the game, I get blown away by this mystery building

I love smashing those windows! It's a rare treat, but not that rare for players who regularly do full clears. One of my recent builds had some fun there, a bowler druid. Rocks > Glass (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/insane-wayne/Striker/Screenshot4255copy.jpg). Very appropriate!
Also saw some free-standing (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v341/insane-wayne/Striker/Screenshot4252copy.jpg) windows AE mentioned.
Oh, I had assumed this was an entire new area with stair leading to it... oh well...
But here's something I've only seen once (http://www.shokimages.com/viewer.php?file=mknyyjjmtdomfyhmrw3j.jpg), and likely never will again.
Yeah, that happened a few times to me, too. Didn't pay any special attention to it though, because I didn't know that the cathedral was so uncommon.
BTW - Concerning the seed: I thought sharing seeds is not quite accepted here...at least that's what is said in the stickies. Didn't someone already get banned for that? Skull Captain, IIRC? Maybe someone should ask Hrus or Cattleya?

I don't think it's a big deal in this case. This is just to see something cool in normal difficulty. Sharing map seeds is unacceptable if they're for really good MF maps...gotta do the work yourself.

Interesting, I totally didn't know it was rare. I've broken those windows a number of times

Isn't "An Evil Force" what the Keys were called if you used a 1.10 RRM. It seems that "An Evil Force" is a name used for items whose name is missing. Perhaps the windows did have a better name it got left out of the language file. That would be weird.

The one time I can remember seeing all those evil forces, I had like 50 of them. Some where it seemed they should be, others scattered all over the place like in the picture. I was really confused when I saw it, because I couldn't remember ever seeing those before and was worried that they'd morph into dclone or something and give me an anni .

You are right with An Evil Force used for anything not named in the text files... I have experienced it myself when I made some simple mod for test purposes...
old thread but damn i wanna find this!
can someone post a screenshot of the entrance? :S
or should i make a new thread?
o1d_dude posted a screenshot above. There is no real entrance to the cathedral - it's only a kind of building found sometimes in the City of the Damned you can reach by crossing a small bridge. It's not an "extra level" or something like that if you thought so :)

Actually there is an entrance and it's always a small bridge from the "mainland" over to the "island" and it's always on the eastern or right side of the island.
This particular map feature is extremely uncommon. I have seen it only three times in almost 10 years of playing the game.
I think I remember seeing it once, but I didn't know it was so rare.

Well, I was just running through Act IV in nightmare with my frost zealot and what do you know... (http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/8339/screenshot029c.jpg)
(another pic with map) (http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/9200/screenshot028p.jpg)
I've gotten this map feature at least once in my 4 Pat/Mats, and I didn't know what a treat it was to get that in your map. I just found it annoying to have to shatter all those windows. I may have gotten in in other maps, but I almost never clear this area since I'm looking for the RoF portal.

sorry for necromancing this thread, but it gets even funnier:
when you are slain by that "ghostly thing" near mephisto it says - that "xxx was slain by an evil force"
in the Polish version of the game, the "evil force" is called "unused - tell Ken"
wonder who Ken was
I even have a char called Tell-Ken :D

1: I've NEVER seen the cathedral.
2: In the Spanish version, the bone prison used by Diablo is also called "Unused, tell Ken".

Ken was probably a freshman just before D2 came out, responsable for filling up missing game text, and so they blame everythign on him with that name :)
So Ken is Blizzard's Durf?

The best death messages are
"Martyr was killed by Martyr" or "Dood was killed by a trap". I died to an exploding barrel once looking for a health potion in early normal; my roomate at the time thought it was hilarious.
I wanna see how those windows react to monster shrines. They'll probably turn into windows vista.

Thanks helvete, I had a mouthful at the time :rolf:
I'd like to cast Confuse on some nearby critters and watch them smash the windows. It would make me feel like an evil criminal (vandal) mastermind.
LOL
Best two posts in a row ever

There's a reason for that.
Most of us just blast through that map looking for the Stairs to the River of Fire.

lmao, I mean omg, that is the funniest post I've seen in SPF in my four years.

I'm more interested what happens when you actually break those Vistas. Does the entire server crash or do you get some special Windows\Linux CD case charm that cannot be removed once you identify it and it'll curse you forever?
Kinda random, seen this thread the other day and just now while running my new cow zon through NM I ran into it
very cool!

It is my belief that once you ID any item from a Windows Vista boss, an OEM curse hits you, which limits the gear pieces you can upgrade.

Maybe we should ask Ken.
I rate this thread 5/5. :)
Thats some seriously funny stuff!
but now I really wanna try it out, what are the odds of getting a monster shrine in the same map? but I suppose If you found a map with it you could just re-run the shrine locations to find one.
Then what about an act 5 one? like a barricade or catapult? hmmmmmmmmmmm.....
Boss barricade is liek "YOU SHALL NOT PAZ!"
Just in case anyone really cares:
Epic fail on creating windows vista, Got a good map with a shrine in the center of the cathedral, but when I seeded it the shrine wasn't there anymore, weird, but it was just outide of it, so I think its still a fair test.
Shot #1 (http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/2886/screenshot233n.jpg)
Shot #2 (http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/416/screenshot232q.jpg)
Checked everything and no monster got changed (I cleared out the whole City first)
I think it took over 300 tries to get that shrine, that was annoying, I didn't think they were that rare. And in that time I only got 2 Gem shrines and 2 portal shrines (the other rare ones I believe)
I still want to see if I can make anything else a monster(I know scimitars and vile children have been done).
(I do know how to safely seed, and destroyed the seed after the test, FYI)

Nice try, kestegs.
I highly doubted it would work, but it's good to see proof. Monster shrines are indeed pretty rare. I might see one per act, two if I'm lucky, and that's with full clears.
I've created boss scimitars, baby spawners, and a baby maggot. Oddly enough, a regular crow nest did not convert to a boss or champ, despite the fact that both are possible to find. I clicked a shrine very close to the nest and it failed.
Other failures include various traps and a river snake. I killed both snake tails leaving the head alive, half a screen from shrine. No luck.

I´ve created a Cold Enchanted Fallen with a Monster Shrine. Its Shaman kept resurrecting the fallen (it was too dangerous to kill the Shaman anytime soon, becuase if a nasty archer pack), so I got to "enjoy" dealing with the death nova 5 times...
Another failure: Council Member (minion).
