Im new to all the 'uber' talk (just learned how to get to uber tristram) and i have a lvl 83 fire sorc- what are tourchs and should i consider paladin torch to be the best or do all the people who say its the best say this because they need that particular torch?

A torch is short for Hell Fire Torch, the reward for successfully killing the three bosses in Uber Tristram. For details on torches check The Arreat Summit under items/unque items/charms.

Pally torches are "best" because it seems like everyone is playing at least one pally character (demand) and because +skills and stats make a big difference in many Pally builds (benefit). Demand and benefit drive the value of the Torch economy.

I think paladin is the most popular character. It's kinda like how pally combat GC's are the most valuable. Even after pally, I think torch values differ. For example, I'm pretty sure a sorc torch is slightly more valuable than some other torches.

Yep. Paladin Torches are the most sought after. Sorceress Torches are second. Barbarian Torches are probably the least valuable because they benefit more from weapons/armour than +skill items.

barb mastery, assasin shadow discipline, Druid summoning, pally defensive are right down there too. But those are GC's.

Blizzard decided not to include that content in single player.

In my experience, it breaks down sort of like this value wise:
Paladin Torch
Sorceress Torch
Druid Torch/Barb Torch/Amazon Torch
Necromancer Torch/Assassin Torch
Some might consider Amazon torch to be on the bottom rung, but whatever.
The value basically goes hand in hand with whatever the most popular dueling characters are, as they are far less important for pvm. Ofcourse a low torch is significantly less valuable than a high torch, so you have to take that into account too.

Thanks Friend,
I had the feeling somewhere in my mind that this might be for multiplayer games only. Thanks for removing my confusion.

I should also add that it won't work in open battlenet either (single player characters played in multiplayer games). The event only appears on the battlenet servers.
