Ok, I'm sorry if this question has been posted and replied already, but I wasn't able to find it in a search, stick, or adequately addressed in tech faqs at blizzard or microsoft...
D2 has been frequently CtD on me, and before it was occasionally and was a minor inconvenience, but now it's occuring frequently. Going by what blizzard suggests, I reinstalled D2, updated my sound and video drivers, and updated my directX version (which, by the way, I find it irritating that microsoft keeps updating DirectX without updating the version name, so when you check which version you have by name, you think you're up to date and aren't). It seems to have made the problem worse...
It always happens during runs, I thought it was when I exited the game from act V, but it happens in act 1 now too. It also happens when I leave a game, but it now also happens when I press "join" sometimes.
Any info would be appreciated, thanks
David
Some times mine crashes to the desktop from my firewall blockin somthin or when my computer does a Scan for Updates.
check if you have any spy ware programs that might also be auto updating that could be the reason.
Does the game crash and then just kick the bucker or are you able to click back into the game?

It's always worth checking if you are running D2 in 3d mode or DirectDraw 2d.
Run the vidtest programme in the Diablo2 folder and switch to 2d if it isn't there already. This has worked for lots of folk.

I experienced this just last nite and attributed it to the copy/paste bug. Was just getting going with a group of baal'ers to level and did a copy/past of the game name, clicked "join" and was presented w/ my desktop and no game to be found.
If that's what actually caused it, my only work around is to copy/paste, delete the last character (probably a number) and type another character to replace it. Even if it's the first run i'll retype, e.g. just got done with baalrun01, s/e, type "baalrun02" copy/paste, delete "2" type "2" click join. If I skip the "delete 2 type 2" step the game will sometimes give an unhandled exception or, as last nite, CtD. Future runs would just be "delete 2 type x click join" where x is the next number in the baalrun.

Actually, this sounds possible because I do copy/paste during runs, and I had not heard of this bug previously. However, I already do delete and type... but maybe I can do it differently, here's exactly what I do...
The first time I type the name... for my own runs, say, "vbaal-01". Then I copy vbaal-01 before I join, and after I exit, I past vbaal-01, hit right arrow to unhighlight, backspace to delete the 1, and type 2 to make the name for the next game, shift + home, then copy, then create.
I'll start just skipping copy + paste all together and see if that helps. I'll try the 2D thing if it doesn't. Thanks for the responses.
