View Full Version : Why mfing?
Yea i know, its a dumb question :azn:
But hear me out.
Today i was able to make the spirit monarch shield, and coupled with the sword i was finally ready to run meph without any fear of death by forexample dolls.
So i did 40 some meph runs. (i'm blizz btw, so mephi dies quickly)
With half of them i put on mf gear (about 200 mf) and the other half just the regular (faster) equipment (around 50 mf).
Now i first did mf and most of the time i a had many blues and sometimes yellows, greens and golds, then i put down the mf gear and unbelievably all kinds of uniques started dropping along with some sets, i dropped 2 lidless, 1 stormchaser, 1 stormshield, 1 blackoak shield, 1 chromatic ire, 1 duriels shell, 1 Kira's Guardian, 1 cold facet, 1 crown of thieves, 1 corpsemorn, 1 eshuta's temper and some medium greens and other lower uniques and almost all without the mf gear.
I never been so lucky in good drops in a row in my life and all thanks to absolutly no mf!
So is it just good luck or is there more to it?

most likely good luck. i think more mf just means a better chance to get uniques and such. no mf doesnt mean no chance to drop :P
something that is odd that I have noticed is that with a gull dagger drops seem to never be good. I've done a couple of tests with it. I've done about 20 runs with gull dagger, nothing good. Then I switch to an ali baba and all of a sudden better drops start to fall. Odd =/ maybe just a coincidence
Yes, it maybe is just coincidence, what i do notice is that more mf really works on regular enemies (you can almost see it go up from white to blue to yellow etc..)
But what i am thinking is that bosses like Mephi always have a good chance at not dropping just magic items but unique and set items, maybe if you have more mf it also gives more chance at dropping a blue item with less benefit to dropping a unique or set and thus less chance at dropping a unique or set item.
Lets say, just for an example, that mephi has 1 chance in 10 to drop a unique or set item thus 10% chance, now lets say that your mf gear makes that 15% chance but also makes normal magic drops go up 10%, so meaning that you have lets say 5% less chance at dropping a unique or set and more chance of getting lots of blue items.
Now i'm more then probable looking way to much into it though, but who knows, there may be some truth to this theory.

not true, when a monster dies, the game makes a series of checks to see what that monster drops which is always in the same order. the first is "no drop" which checks if the monster drops or not and how many items (max 6 for any monster) then it chooses the base item. the game then checks the item quality always starting with unique, then set, rare, magic, superior, normal and low quality. bosses have 100% to choose magic, but only drops magic if it fails to select anything higher. when you have MF, its these perentages that increase, but is nerfed exponentially as you load up on MF gear for uniques, sets and rares (substantially for uniques). after about 200~300 its better to work on killing speed.
Ah i see, it starts with highest and then goes down, yea that makes sense, thanks.
Btw i did another string of mephi runs and almost nothing, no matter with mf gear or not, guess its just a weird chance of luck.
