I have a vision. A vision of a MF hammerdin amulet so godly that the servers themselves explode with awesomeness. It would have these mods:

+2 to Paladin Skills or +3 Combat Skills
10% Faster Cast Rate (or higher)
20% Magic Find (or higher)

If the Diablo gods saw fit to also put +strength or +all resistance on it, I would build several churches in their honor.

Now theoretically I could find all those mods on a rare amulet, but the odds are astronomical and I think crafting is my better bet. But the crafting formula makes my head spin. For starters, here are the affix levels of everything:

Chromatic (+all res) - 55
Priest's (+2 pally skills) - 90
Rose Branded (+3 combat skills) - 60
Fortuitious (+mf) - 12
of Atlas (+strength) - 71
of Titan (less + strength) - 58
of Luck (+mf) - 26
of the Apprentice (10 fcr) - 5

The highest one is 90, but going for a +3 combat and slightly less strength is maybe more reasonable, in which case the highest would be 60. Amulets have a qlvl of 1, so the factors here are my character level, and the area in which the amulet drops.

So how high do I need to be, and where do I need to get amulets, in order to craft such a thing? If gambled items get a minimum of my level - 5, how high would I need to be to gamble good crafting fodder? If the highest ilvl areas in the game are all ilvl85, then by my calculations, I would need to be at a whopping lvl96 to craft any dropped amulets to get +2 skills! That can't be right... can it?

I'm no maths nut so can't help you there but I will tell you that +3 combat skills can't spawn on a craft so rule that out.

AFAIK, crafting takes the average of your input items ilvl (in this case the amulet) and you crafting characters ilvl to determine the output (craft amulet) ilvl.

Hence, if you want +2 pali skills you need an output ilvl of 90.

The easiest way to get amulets to craft is to gamble. Gambled items have an ilvl +5/-4 (is that right it's not +4/-5 is it, I never remember) of your character level. So to enusre you get an amulet that will be capable of getting + 2 skills you need to gamble with an level 92 character.

This will mean all amulets gambled will be at least ilvl 88 so when you craft with the level 92 character you will end up with a crafted amulet of ilvl 90.

Hope that makes sense.

Edit: As far as monster levels go if you get blue ammys off bosses/champions in ilvl 85 areas they will have ilvl 88 so you will only need to be 92 to craft them to get +2 skills.

Meph at mlvl 87 may be an easier target, but you'd need to be one level higher for crafting.

Thanks, didn't know about the non-craftability of certain mods. Are those listed anywhere?

The Arreat Summit lists the gamble range as -5 to +4, so a level 92 guy could get ilvl 87 items, which sadly isn't enough to average 90 for crafting. Level 93 is, however, which is still much more realistic than 96. I guess I have a few more levels to go before I start hunting down junk jewels. :sigh:

Generally for what's craftable and what's not I check the Arreat Summit.

If you can get it on a rare you can get it on craft AFAIK so I just go by what's available for rares.

I was thinking about crafting a blood weapon for a lvl 30 barb character. What lvl axe should I be looking for, and I suppose I should be crafting with a lvl 30 character.

If my lvl 30 char shops for a blue axe, am I going to get a weapon with char lvl req of 30?

I am not a math nut either, lol.

Thanks tho,

I think it´s easier to get those abilities on a rare amulet than on a crafted. Rares get up to 6 random affixes while crafted get up to 4. Granted, the Faster Cast is always there on a crafted Caster amulet, but if it must have at least 10% (9% is not enough) the guaranteed ability will only be that high in 1/6 of the tries. On the other hand, only 10% of gambled amulets are rare, so you´ll probably need a lot of gold...
