View Full Version : What are the mechanics of gaining experience

In this case, when someone of a higher level 70+ kills monsters for you(You're level 10 or so in this case)?

I've seen a lot of people scream and shot when a higher level character comes in and helps them do tristram runs, tombs, whatever. They usually say that the higher level character *steals* the experience points.

Does it work that way?

Yes. Characters get one share per level. That means, the XP are distributed among more shares than it would be for two low-level characters, so the XP per share are lower and the low-level char will indeed get less XP.

I'm not very knowladgable on this subject, but I do know that higher level characters gain more experience than lower level characters when they fight as a party.

Pwned.

It's exactly as krischan says. In your example, with a level 70 and level 10 character, the level 70 character would get 70/80 shares, while the level 10 character would get 10/80 shares. Meaning per kill the level 70 character will be receiving 7 times the amount of experience as the level 10 character. What a level 70 character would be doing in an area with level 10 characters (unless they were being rushed) is another question entirely. Of course, if you're being rushed then you know you're getting a decrease in experience anyway.

This link (http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/basics/experience.shtml) has about all the detail you could ask for.

So why do many high level chars make baal runs with level req where you have to be level X to join? you would thing that it would be better for them if 7 low levels joined....

i guess its for speed purposes. you still get decent exp from baal runs with a high level though.

I've never understood the mentality of "stealing XP." Say a lvl 70 character is leveling 7 lvl 10 characters through Tristram. The lvl70 would get 50% of the experience, and the lvl 10's would get about 7%. Without the level 70, they'd all get about 14% experience. But considering how much faster the runs would go, wouldn't they still be gaining more experience with the level 70? They'd earn less per run, but way more per real-life minute spent playing.

I dont think thats true. In your case you would have to do the runs twice as fast as without a high level.
Not only killing, but finding tristram.

If the high level is higer than 70, then you would have to do it even faster.

But then you also have the penalty for the killer Clvl > Mlvl, which is 5% of the original exp. It's strange that Tristram is so popular, while the number of bosspacks is quite limited. You fight Rakanishu, Griswold, one random bosspack and a couple of champions. The countess' tower has 1 - 2 bosspacks per level, as well as the countess at the end, that's a total of at least 6 bosspacks, and at a slightly higher level too. It's just as easy to find as Tristram.

I never thought about that. Ill try it, but its gonna be hard to convince people on B.net to do those kind og runs instead of tristram.

I'd say it would be even easier to find. Often tends to be very close to the WP, at least in my experience.

It's a lot easier for me to find Tristram than the upside down tower thing.

Just stay on the path in Stony Field and there's a big, yellow, screaming portal just waiting for you to jump through it.

It can net some easy experience in low levels if you really don't care enough to level the legit way. Easy to find, fast, easy to find, fast. It works.

Doing the CS with a lvl 9x and having 7 lvl 1-24s in the middle should net some nice exp for the lvl 9x then?

Paladine

yes which is why a lot of people from lvl 90-99 prefer CS runs instead of baal runs

The Tower levels in normal mode are very small, so it's not uncommon not to encounter any monsters at all before reaching the stairs and you will have to be lucky to encounter a boss pack. Also, the Tristram portal is easier to find. It's always within viewing range of the road which can be found in a few seconds.

However, for exping purposes, you'd deliberatly not follow the left wall as you would when you want to reach the countess asap. It is rare not to find a boss/champion pack on each level, and since the levels are small, it's easy to keep up, and stay in "exp range".
