This has nothign to do with the 1.11 patch but its an error with my diablo:

I just installed Diablo2/LoD on my computer and I've played it on this computer before without error.

This time, right before the main menu comes up it errors and crashes saying:

"Assertion Failure Location: C:\Projects\Diablo2\Source\D2Lang\StrTable\strtabl e.cpp, line #270 Expression: lpDefine[usStr] < pHeader- >iHashTableSize"

How can I fix this? Diablo2 is installed on a new external drive and I haven't played diablo through it yet so that might be the problem.

It might. Go to www.battle.net and download the latest patch (you haven't specified if you have already). That fixes a lot of things.

as eventfulhoryzon said 1.11b is the latest patch
http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=mdt0387p

also try running it with ' -skiptobent' at the end of the target line in the shortcut
ex.
"C:\Games\Diablo II\Diablo II.exe" -skiptobnet

playing d2 from an external drive shouldnt be a problem, but load times might be pretty long if its usb

Excellent point. Also, if cinematics give you problems, you can also add "-w" or "-windowed" to the end of the target line. Mine usually reads:

"C:\Program Files\Diablo II\Diablo II.exe" -skiptobnet -w

When it's windowed, it skips over the cinematics. I say this only because you said you just installed the game (there is a cinematic that plays on first play).
