Earlier today, i logged off D2. A few minutes later i tried to log back on, only to see the "Unable to Connect" message. Thinking this was a simple internet connection problem, i checked my web browser, only to find it to be in perfect working order. Despite the internet working, i rebooted my router and modem several times, as well as restarting my computer, also several times, but to no avail. The same "unable to connect" message still appears. The next thing i did was re-install D2, but still no go. Next i tried D2 on my laptop, and still it does not work. After waiting almost five and a half hours, i still cannot connect, and by this time, i am getting pretty frustrated. Finally, i tried to connect to US West, and that worked, but it is useless to me because my account is in US East. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I can't think of anything else to do but wait some more...
i'v been having that too from time to time.. all i could do is just wait it to wear off.
i'v also had an variant of not even seeing that 'unable to connect' message :grin:

If its any consolation, I havent been able to connect all day either. So its not just you, the problem most likely lies with bnet.:thumbsup:
If you are temp banned, the more you try to log on the longer it will last (5 minutes to 48 hours). At this point, try back tomorrow or just make sure you wait a while.

Hes not talking about that.
"Unable to connect" right when you try to load up b.net.

Still happening to me too, dunno what to tell ya. This is definately the longest stretch ive ever had this happen personally.
Whats your location/ISP?
BlackAngusFox
22-07-2007, 01:04
Yeah, i still cannot connect, and its almost 48 hours. However, i feel the reason why i cannot connect is due to the fact that i tried to install D2 on my laptop and i entered the wrong cd key several times. I read on blizzard that that is cause for a temporary ban. I am hoping i will be able to play in about a half hour or so. If i can't i will post again, because that will be longer than 48 hours, and something is definately wrong.:undecided: My location is Newfoundland, Canada, and my internet service provider is Roger's. What about you?

Still cannot connect, and it's been over 48 hours. What is wrong with b.net? I'm starting to get really frustrated.

New York, Verizon.
Prior to this, my last actions on diablo2 were using the mouse wheel to change skills too quickly, and receiving a temp ban on the account. Ive never seen it resort to "Unable to Connect", though.

Still happening..
I dont install a new game for some fun, and expect to not be able to get online for a week. What the hell is going on? I know the servers fine, because ive had friends go on and off and their whim..
BlackAngusFox
22-07-2007, 19:34
Yeah still cannot connect and it's been like 3 days. I'm starting to think the whole cd key thing is the source of the problem, but as to how to fix it, i have no idea. A week you say? That seems pretty harsh for using the mouse wheel and trying some wrong cd keys. haha. I know for a fact the server is fine also, because my friends can get on aswell. Tomorrow when my friend gets back from out of town i will go over to his house and see if i can log on there. You don't think that i am permanatly banned do you? Because temp. ban is only supposed to last up to 48 hours. It's been like 65 now. And if i am banned, will i need a new cd key to be able to play again?
[cK]Extreme
23-07-2007, 16:15
You tryed fake CD keys? Now Im almost embarassed to me lumped in with you.. seeing as the game is less then 5 dollars nowadays.
But dont worry. Im pretty sure they have their own message for a cdkey ban, and im almost positive they wouldnt ban me for using the mouse wheel.
And yeah.. same issue on all the computers in my house. Some of which Ive never used this new account on (havent played in a very long time).

What he said. If you are constantly trying to connect it will take longer and longer. When you first see that message wait at least five mins before trying again, trying 2-3 times in a row will make it at least 15mins before it will work and so on. You can get round it by changing your ip address tho if that's an option for you.

Not true.
We're not talking about the message when you log onto your account, that says you have been temporarily banned from the server. We're clicking battle.net, and getting "unable to connect". No account information applicable.
And I tryed on several computers in my household, all different IPs. The result was the same.
For some reason, when I get temp banned it rarely says that my connection has been temporarily restricted. In fact, it usually says "unable to connect."
Are you certain you are using different ips? Forgive me for being skeptical.

I was able to connect today at my friends house, and no I didn't use fake cd keys, I just entered the wrong one a bunch of times because I spilled something on the cd case and now its illegible. I did manage to figure it out and install the game, but it took me like 5 tries. And beepy, if you read the rest of the chat, you would know that we have been unable to log on for like 4 days, not 15 minutes, so please save yourself some embarassment and read before you post.

Anyway, would my laptop be a different IP than my desktop? Because if so its not working because i cannot connect on my laptop either. Its definately something with my gateway or IP or something because my account is fine. I was playing today at my friends house, as I already said. How would I go about changing my IP or gateway or something?

This definitely makes me think you have a temporary ip ban although they really shouldn't last that long. Most likely, you are using a router, in which case, your computer and laptop would be on the same ip.
A simple reset may reset your ip, however, assuming you have tried this and you have a static ip some others will have to shed their advice. It could, however, be your service provider if it prolongs much longer. Just makes sure you aren't trying to log in repeatedly.

Ive tryed on 3 different static IPs on 3 different PCs in my house, didnt do anything.
To be honest with you, its BS. I have mules that are going to expire soon if I cant get on. Ive only been playing for again for a week or two. I use my scroll wheel, so they ban me for 6 days?

Hello xxxxxxxxxxx,
Thank you for contacting Blizzard Europe Technical Support regarding this connection issue.
Players have reported their service will suddenly become interrupted during game play, showing the message "Connection Interrupted", and then unable to log back on to the Battle.net servers as they receive the message "Your Connection has been Temporarily Restricted from this Realm". Please try to log in at another time. This message will appear as a result of the following:
- Rapidly connecting and disconnecting to Battle.net
- Creating or joining numerous games within a short time period
- By the use of add-on programs, 'no CD' programs or other hacks
- Chat channel abuse
- Failed login attempts (repeated use of an incorrect password)
- Repeated use of an invalid CD key
- Changing CD keys
This is a temporary restriction and it should automatically release itself after a predetermined amount of time. Each restriction is different and lengths are dependant upon the severity of the violation, suspensions can be from a few hours to fourteen days. This is also a realm specific error so you may find yourself being able to connect to the other 3 realms as well as Open Battle.net and Single Player.
If this issue does not resolve itself after fourteen days, please reply back with your account name, realm, IP address ( http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=Smyip000 ) and a time frame of how long you have been experiencing this issue.
Please be aware we are not able to remove these restrictions.
If you have any other technical issues please do not hesitate to contact us.
Best regards,
Blizzard Entertainment Europe

Problem type: Connection to Battle.net
Game: Diablo II: Lord of Destruction
Description: During my last diablo2 session, I accidentally used the scroll wheel to change abilities and received your "temporary" ban.
That was three days ago. I now get the message "Unable to connect to battle.net" when loading up the game. I dont even GET to the temporary message I was getting a few days ago. I cant even connect.
Nothing with my internet has changed.
Nothing with my router was changed.
I tryed downloading your registry edit linked on your page (to reset the server list), reinstalling, and connecting from other computers. Nothing works. I know the server isnt down, because all my friends can get online.
My D2X CDKEY is as followed: FILTERED ;p
I doubt it, but was my cdkey banned for the scroll wheel thing? Thats the only possibility I can come up with, theres no reason for me to not be able to connect for this long.

Good news. I have definately found the source of the problem. The guy at Blizzard said that my IP is temporarily banned, which could last anywhere between 3 days and 2 weeks. Since tomorrow is the 1 week mark, i am half way there. Bad news, the call cost me 57 cents a minute, and i was on hold for quite some time. Oh well, anyway, [ck] extreme, you should be able to get back online in about a week or so. Since i know that i am banned, i won't try again for a few days, so i will not post for another few days. Keep me informed however if u make any progress. My guess is that you are also temporarily banned. Good Luck. Cheers.

Yeah I changed my IP address/rebooted several times, and it still doesnt work.
So i dunno wtf is going on anymore, but I have mules on east ladder that are going to expire soon. And if they do, i'm done with this game. Try to play a 10 year old game for fun in my downtime, and this happens? Not worth the aggravation.
Extreme;5723656']Not true.
We're not talking about the message when you log onto your account, that says you have been temporarily banned from the server. We're clicking battle.net, and getting "unable to connect". No account information applicable.
Yup, one type of temp ban symptom is exactly that, a message as soon as you click the battlenet button.
And beepy, if you read the rest of the chat, you would know that we have been unable to log on for like 4 days, not 15 minutes, so please save yourself some embarassment and read before you post.
I did read all of the posts, and I'm not in the least bit embarrassed. I was offering some information, maybe it doesn't apply to you, but maybe it will help someone else with a similar problem. I can well understand you lashing out tho, if I was trapped out of battlenet for 4 days I'd be a little cranky too ;)
...at least 15mins before it will work >>and so on<<.... The implication there being that if you keeping trying the ban will get longer. If you've tried it like 60 times or something it may well rack up to a very long ban. From Blizzards own help (posted above and available online):
....If this issue does not resolve itself after fourteen days....
So you see it really can be longer than 15 minutes ;)
Perhaps you can temporarily install the game on a friend's computer to refresh your mule accounts? Also, without wanting you to declare jihad, are you sure the static IP you have changed is your pubic IP, and not the local IP of your PC's? If you want to check go to http://www.whatsmyip.org - it will show you your current extrenal IP. Can you make that IP change by what you have tried to do to change your IP?

25-07-2007, 18:03
>.>;
I guess ive been changing the wrong IPs, because thats a different number then ive been seeing. How do I change my 'external IP', as you put it?
Well without wanting to embarrass myself, I'll risk posting again. Your 'external IP' is your IP address on the Internet. As there are a limited number of these available, many (most) networks have only one device using this external IP. This device is then the 'gateway'. The rest of the devices on the local network (and also 1 or more 'interfaces' of the gateway) use a private 'subnet', with completely unrelated IP addresses. The gateway device then translates between the Internet IP space and your local IP space. This means you can use lots and lots of local IP addresses, but only need 1 of the limited number of Internet IP addresses. This works because local IP addresses can be the same on different local networks (for example your computer at home and your mates computer at his house could have the same local IP), but Internet addresses must be uniquely assigned.
Anyway, to answer your question, you need to change the external IP address on your gateway device. A gateway device could be lots of things... a USB ADSL modem, a Linux PC with a network card and modem, an expensive Cisco box, a cable modem, an ADSL router, etc. So the first step is to figure out what your gateway device is. You might already know, if you are using ADSL it's most likely the box connected to the phoneline (and is an ADSL router, perhaps supplied by your ISP). If you are using cable then it's likely a cable modem/router, again perhaps supplied by your ISP. The reason I'm being a bit vauge is because there are so many potential options (I'm using an ADSL router, but that's not the thing I'd need to re-configure to change my external IP ;) ).
Let's assume you are using a cable or ADSL router of some kind, because that's most likely. Now the next problem is how to actually change your IP address. Unfortunately this isn't straight forward either. Your external IP might be 'static' or 'dynamic'. Your ISP actually owns your external IP and they have lots of them. They might just give you one 'fixed' IP address that only you use (static IP), or they might just randomly hand them out as a device asks for them (dynamic). If you have a dynamic IP then you have the simplest answer.
Assuming your IP address is dynamic, simply switch off your router and leave it off for >AT LEAST< 10 minutes. The reason for leaving it that amount of time is so that your connection 'dies' at the other end. If you simply switch it off and back on again you will just re-establish the same connection you already had with the same IP. If you don't know whether your IP is static or dynamic then just try this anyway. Btw, if your router has a 'reset' button DON'T push that, you want the on/off switch. The reset button will royally screw things up (it's normally made hard to push, like you need to push a pin in or something, but not always).
If your IP address is static then you have more of a problem. If you have a block of IP addresses you could reconfigure your router to use a different one, but I can't help you with that as every device has a different way of doing it. Ring your ISP and ask them. If you have a single static IP then you are in the worst situation. You might be able to ask your ISP to change it, but they will probably charge you for it and take longer to do it than the temp ban will to expire.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Phew that was long. To put it another way:
Find box connected to wall, switch off. Go stare at clouds for ten minutes. Swith wall box back on. See if IP has changed. If not ring ISP and say you want new IP.
[cK]Extreme
25-07-2007, 19:43
Certainly not ringing them up to change my IP for diablo2 lol.
I use a Dlink DIR-655 wireless gaming router. The IPs are static, set to each PC in my house. I went about changing that, the 192.168.0.xxx number, to something else and changed all the assigned IPs.
But whatever, im not going through all this trouble for a 10 year old game. If it works itself out great, if not.. i have better things to do.
Yes the 192.168.0.xxx numbers are your internal IP's, not relevant to this. Just simply try turning off that Dlink router, leave it off for ten minutes, then power it back up. If you have a dynamic external IP then your problem will be solved. If your external IP is static then you just went without Internet for ten minutes for no benefit - nothing worse.
i unplugged my router for about 20 minutes, and my IP is still the same. Does this mean i have a static IP? And if so, do i just have to wait for the temporary ban to wear off?
BlackAngusFox
26-07-2007, 20:38
Yeah, i am in the worst situation because i have a single static IP and i called my ISP and it is 8.99 a month for an extra IP. Any suggestions besides waiting for the ban to wear off?
Well europe realm is the best, you might try playing there ;)
You could try running your connection through a proxy server, it would need to be a proxy for all traffic, not just an http proxy. Some ISP's provide a proxy server, ask them and explain what it's for so they don't just set you up on an http proxy. There are also open public proxies - but beware, if an evil person is running the proxy they could see all of your unencrypted traffic, e.g. picking up on all your logins to websites or even games or anything unencrypted (so not your online banking).
I'm kind of busy killing monsters atm so I can't really be more detailed than that. Maybe at work tomorrow ;)
hey mate,
Glad you can join us again!
BTW. i just called the Europe support line and asked if they could confirm my Restriction. He asked for my ip and he told me it would be restricted for another 3 days. Then i would be able to get online again.(this is also excactly 3 weeks)
So for everyone who is reading this, if you are getting long time banned better call the support line (you can find this at blizzard.com)
They can tell you how long you get restricted.
Cheers mate
Blizzard really Fed on this problem. They can't fight dupers through randomly bannishing player's access to the game, that's just doing more harm than good. What has to be done is to make it impossible to dupe in the first place.
Blizzard created this problem. Who cares if there's millions of duped items on the realms if your not able to access them anyway.
This is happening to me too, and i haven't done anything that could cause it except:
I got a new labtop, installed diablo LOD and got online. Changed my mind, bought a new version of the game so that i could mule safely using my old labtop. Uninstalled and installed with the new key.
Could this cause a temp-ban?
