View Full Version : Getting XP bonus for killing?

So i made a new druid and wanted him to gain levels fast.
I gave him a 10% more xp anni and a Ondals staff with 5% more xp.
Then i made a baal run with my trap Assassin and joined with the druid.
I made like 20 runs and thought the druid would gain a bit more xp than the assassin that only had 5% more xp from her anni.
But the assassin turned out to be getting more xp.
They were the same level when they started 85 i think.
The assassin would tele to baals throne, kill the random monsters and make a TP, i would then enter with the druid and leech in a corner.
Do you get more XP for killing things?
Or is it simply because the assassin would kill the random monsters alone before making a TP for the others to enter?

I'm pretty sure you get more experience for killing things yourself than for leeching, I don't know the exact numbers though. It's certainly the case with mercs though, they get several times more experience for killing something themselves than you killing something for them (and of course they get no experience for the kills of other people).

i knew that. But does it work the same way for characters?
No

Given no other variables, I'd have to say that's it.
Arreat Summit (http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/basics/experience.shtml)
The total experience earned for killing a monster is increased by 35% when a party member of the killer is in the same named area, defined as the "level" on the Automap. Then the pool is divided as explained below:
The total experience earned for killing a monster is divided evenly among all party members. Each member's share of the experience is equal to the member's level divided by the sum of all members' levels

So Leeching is infact just as good as killing things.
JME your answer brings up a few new questions though.
About the "level" on the automap. So as long as my map says the same as the killers automap, i should get XP.
I could Leech from one corner of the cow level while some one were killing cows in the other end and i would still get the same amount of xp?
How exactly does the %more xp work?

I could Leech from one corner of the cow level while some one were killing cows in the other end and i would still get the same amount of xp?It should be about 2-3 screens away, not an entire area. That change was made in 1.10 to limit leeching in the bloody foothills.
How exactly does the %more xp work?
TotalMonsterExp = BaseMonsterExp * (1 + .5*AdditionalPlayersInGame) * (1+.35*AdditionalPartiedNearbyPlayers)
TotalMonsterExp is set when the monster spawns. When the monster dies, the TotalMonsterExp is split up among all nearby partied players as JME said: CharacterExp = TotalMonsterExp * (clvl)/(sum of the clvls of all nearby partied players).
Your share is then modified by the mlvl/clvl penalty, high clvl penalty, and ondals/anni/shrine bonuses multiplicatively.
Note: the .35 number is an approximation. It's really 89/256. All the calculations are done with integer arithmetic, but increased by a factory of 256 that is divided out at the end.
For the record, TGT's formula and explanation also explains why people who think ondals or an anni steals experience are idiots. I hate it when people scream out "know ondalz n00b."
The calculation for increase comes after everyone's experience is divided up. By the way, the link I posted explains the calculations for mlvl/clvl penalties and the high clvl penalty.
but increased by a factory of 256

Thats exactly what i were looking for!
One last question though.
how much does that 10% more xp you would gain with a perfect anni and ondals really do for you?
Yes its impossible to say exact, but is it really worth it?

I'll take a wild guess and say it's exactly 10% better. :brainiac:

Thats the obvious answer, but it really dossent feels like its 10% faster.
Im thinking there are some kind of catch

Im thinking there are some kind of catch The exp bonus is the last thing applied before you get the exp, i.e. after all various penalties have taken place (at least according to the source of inDiablo.de's exp calc (http://diablo2.ingame.de/tips/calcs/expcalc/expcalcneu.php)).

Pretty hard to use in german. Well, i think i get the idea.

IIRC it's 87/256 in 1.11b now.

Haha, exactly my first thought. To be a little nitpicking, itīs even less if you compare a char with 105% exp gain and one with 115%. If there are some juicy bossgoups when clearing the throne, I could imagine, that the clearing would earn you more than the xp-difference later. Just to remove it from the possible error list, your Ondals doesnīt have a red background due to some str bug?

Yeah, apparantly it changed, presumably due to 'optimization'.

No, i can use that ondals, i have enough str and dex.
Im guessing its the clearing of the throne that does it.

I'm sure it is. Clearing the throne can net you a good bit of experience, especially when it's packed to the brim with champions and such. I also see you are wearing an anni on your teleporter so that makes clearing the throne even more beneficial. In the future, you may want to do what I do. Clear out the bottom right corner and immediately bring your leecher in. Then clear the rest of the throne room. The difference should be less severe then.

I was actually thinking about doing that. But im pretty sure that the leecher would die at some point when doing this.
People who enter the portal allways run arround like a chicken without its head

My druid is still un-statted. So he still has under 1k life with Oak and BO

you said your druid was lv85 when starting leeching,so a lv85 druid with sage and BO has only 1k life?man, where u put all your states, energy?
