If you use a base item with a high qlvl, can the six-skull recipie produce items with high level prefixs/suffixes?

6 Perfect Skulls + 1 Rare Item = 1 Random Low Quality Rare Item of the same type
You can use this formula to get another chance at a Rare Item of the same type. ilvl = int(.4 * clvl) + int(.4 * ilvl) Player level matters.

This is what I have in mind: I (through some means or other) acquire a rare Diadem. Diadems have an qlvl of 85, and a Magic Level of 18. I put in the rare diadem and six skulls, and transmute. Normally, the Diadem would reroll with a crap ilvl, but the qlvl forces the ilvl up to 85, and the Magic Level still further to 103, meaning that with enough PSkulls I can roll myself a tasty +2 skills Circlet, despite the nerfing of the six-skull recipie.

Am I correct? If I am, this seems... rather useful.

Yep, that's correct. Affix's are determined by ilvl, qlvl and magic_lvl (though alot of times don't have magic_lvl anyway). If the item has a high enough qlvl (and magic_lvl if applicable), then you can still get high affixes regardless of the ilvl.

Note though, the ilvl is also used for other aspects of the item, such as staffmods and socket count. In these cases, the qlvl isn't used, but this might not be an issue for you though.

If you have a L87+ character, you can as well gamble for coronets, that's probably more effective. 1 in 10 will be rare and there are a couple of good magical ones as well. It doesn't matter when it doesn't become a diadem because at L87 the alvl will be 87-5+magic_level for coronets (more for tiaras and diadems) which results to at least 90.

Another option is the Charsi quest reward. Each time I find a nonmagical diadem, I mule it to a character who hasn't used that quest reward so far... at least at this stage of the season. Later I might be too lazy for that :azn:
