Right, it is possible that this has been posted before, if so I apologize.

Anyway, I have a seriously annoying problem, namely that the game causes my computer to shut down and go into so sort of dormant mode. I can't even turn it back on for a few minutes unless I cut the power. This thing happens the very instant I attack my first monster outside the rogues camp. No error messages, no freezes, no nothing...except for complete shutdown. ...Which quite frankly pisses me off.

Anyone have any ideas about what might be causing it?(same thing happens to me in nwn1, btw)

I currently have a geforce 7900 gt/gto, amd athlon 64 x2 4200+ processor and a realtek hi def audio-card.

It's definately hardware related, and has nothing to do with D2. First step to check out in any kind of restart issue --- RAM. If you have more than one stick of RAM start removing them and testing each one individually.

Also from the sound of it, you're not experiencing reboots but shutdowns. What kind of power supply does your computer have? Are you sure it's enough for rig? There's a reccomendation on your gfx card box for the power supply.

the problem could be anything, bad memory like The Cow King suggests, to driver problem, to overheating

first make sure all of the fans are spin up in the case, cpu, psu, video, case fans
and try running with the side cover off, to allow hot air to escape more easily

then try updating drivers, mobo, video, sound, network, ect...

if your video card has a power connector, make sure its plugged in, and that your power supply is strong enough to run it, the box for the card will say the power reqs, and the psu will have voltage/amp chart

I think it may be a PSU problem as fferjxx covered. Can you tell us the PSU Brand and Model? The amperages for the 12V rails too would be good.

Right, first of all, thanks for replying. And yes, it has to be a hardware prob, cuz like cow king said, it's shutdowns I'm experiencing. However, these have to be related to D2 in some way since I'm not getting them in any other game or program(with the exception of neverwinter nights 1). Other games or programs will occasionally crash, but that's common stuff and I'll get error messages and whatnot. This, however...is just ****ed up.

My drivers are up to scratch, my fans are running correctly. As for the power, it aught to be sufficient, as I had a shop put the damned thing together for me^^

try using pcmark to help narrow down your problem, it has several tests, memory, video, processor, audio, ect...

Try adjusting your video settings. Also, run the D2 Graphics test utility, and try the different options in there.

RE: Shutdown bug

My brother is getting this bug on his laptop when we play local TCP/IP games. It's happened twice now - his computer just randomly shuts down in the middle of play. AND as noted by the previous poster... it takes a while before it is prepared to restart. The first time it happened we thought the motherboard was fried. Fortunately not, but it's a weird bug that's for sure.

Any ideas?
