Ok, so i go and get my haircut yesterday at one of the chain barbers. A haircut there is only $12 and i always leave a $3 tip. Now my wife starts to complain that i am tipping too much. She doesn't think i should give them more then $2! But she also complains that i tip the pizza guy too much also. Although as long as i tip them what i do we have never had a pizza come late or cold or anything!! What do you guys/gals think??

From your wife's perspective:
Have the extra dollar be spent on a stranger or have the extra dollar spent on her.
I know what I'd choose if I was the wife...
10-20% is standard, more if you choose.
For my haircuts, which are the same price, I usually tip $2, maybe $3 if I'm in a good mood and the person did a good job while being friendly, chatty, and prompt.
For an on time pizza costing around 10-15 bucks, I will tip 2-3 dollars depending on the exact price.

Well, in America life's "cheap" compared to Belgium, so feel free to tip whatever you please, iirc "the average tip" is 15% (so in your case 2 euros would be enough, but if you think the barber did a splendid job and wish to give 3, then by all means)
In Belgium, prices are so high because the tip is more or less included in the price.

I understand what you are saying tmc, but i also take the point that she gets my paycheck every week anyways so one less dollar for her isn't going to kill her!
And for pizza my average order is around $15 and i usually just give the driver a $20 and tell him to keep the change. I mean, gas is expensive, they have to use their own car and they don't get paid a whole lot an hour! That's how i feel anyways, wife just doesn't agree!
I think since you've been tipping $3 for the barber, you should continue. If you've been to the place regularly, and you suddenly start tipping lower, the barber may be angry. But in the case of pizza, it should usually be different people, shouldn't it? If so, you can get away with tipping lower I suppose. $5 dollar tip on a $15 dollar pizza is a lot though. I can't say that I've tipped more % than that... on purpose.

I will usually tip anywhere from 15-20% depending on service. If the service isn't very good, I'll tip less (no tip if the services was flat out bad). 20% of $13 is $2.60. So... $.40 isn't a huge differential to be honest - particularly if your barber does a good job and you like the place.

I'm definetly not going to stop just because she says so...if that was the case i would never feel boobs again!!
The main reason i tip the way i do to pizza guys is because when i was in college i delivered pizza. They don't get paid crap and there are more people then you would think that don't tip crap! They think that delivery fee is part of the drivers tip, but it isn't....that pays for the places insurance on the driver!
I also think that it bothers my wife the way i tip because is because her dad is one of those that doesn't tip crap anywhere. We go out to eat and he leaves a $1. Good service, bad service, it doesn't matter. We order pizza at his house and he leaves enough to round up the total to the next dollar and that's it.

Like Lunar said, you are only tipping your barber 23% which is pretty close to the standard. And unless you really want to have 40 cents rattling around in your pocket why not round up?
$5 for a pizza delivery seems pretty high. I would say that a couple of bucks is about the average.
If he uses a cut-throat razer for tidying up and the shave then a higher tip is probably a good choice.

Same here. I started tipping a significantly higher percentage after I delivered pizzas for a while.

I tip very well to my stylist.
I don't mean to sound racist, but I have a bob. American sytlists suck at it. Hyu delivers perfection every time.
She works at one of the chain cutting places. The cuts are $12.99 and i usually give her ten bucks tip. I know she doesn't make a whole heck of alot cutting there, she relies on tips.
I have this bad habit about not getting my hair cut until it looks so bad I can't stand it. I end up getting a really good cut and a slap on the head. When I sit in her chair I get a "What you thinking? Your hair look like crap (crap is not her work BTW).
She spends a whole heck of a lot of time on my hair. Everything is even (that is why bobs are so hard). She can cut my hair so my tats won't show.
As far as pizza delivery goes, I tip by how quickly I get my order and the weather. If the roads are bad and we are all starving, I tip the driver well. If I order in the summer and it takes an hour for our food, the tip is a bit less.

Kinda on this note, last year i bought my wife a gift certificate at this really nice message parlor here in uptown. It's supposed to be the best in Charlotte so i decided to buy a good package for her for our anniversary. She almost never used it. I had to threaten to use it myself to get her to go before the thing expired.
Before she fineally went i told her that the certificate didn't cover the tip so she needed to take some cash to tip the person. When she got back i asked her how much she gave him/her for a tip and she tells me she didn't tip the person at all.

Maybe you can make her work at a crappy job based on tips? Cut off her funding for awhile?

That would be nice...get her to walk in the shoes of someone who works mainly for tips. That would change her mind on how she tips!

Just tell her that maybe if she started tipping the stylist better he hair would come out right. I guarantee that the tipping section of the argument will end right there.
Always tip well at places you frequent. It's just common sense.

I'd rather tip too much than too little.
I used to valet at a fine-dining restaurant around here. We had a lot of regular customers. And then we had regular customers who tipped well. If we knew someone was going to tip big, they got a table in the corner next to the windows where the smoke from the bar wouldn't drift in, we parked their car where it was in sight of the front door, and usually had it waiting for them out front by the time they left.
On another note, my rule on barbers is you always tip, unless they own the shop.
I asked my barber if she accepted tips the last time I went for a cut. She didn't understand English, and I didn't understand Spanish, so she didn't answer, and I didn't tip.

My stylist charges $20 and I tip her $5. I have pretty fine blond hair so bad haircuts really stand out on me. She does a great job and washes my head (which generally includes a scalp massage). It's money very very well spent for me.

I'm one of those who has never heard of tipping the hair cutter, except online.

I remembered that old thread, and wondered who'd be the idiot to do what you did. Congratulations!
Man, tipping, so glad I don't have to deal with that extra bit of hassle all the time.

Yeah, my wife had a hell of a time getting her (Australian) hairdresser to understand what a bob is for a while.
I leave my hair until it's really awful too.
i have never heard of the term "bob".
Never seen anything from the 30s or 40s?
Although that's probably a different style of bob to what Zodi would have.

In Jingle Bells the horses name is not "Bob", his tail is bobbed.
I've seen the word in a 100 year old dictionary.

Just a clarification: I have no idea what the difference between Barbers and Hairdressers are? They both cut people's hair for a price, right?
Anyway, I usually go to the Kreatos, and pay around 17-19 euros, depending if I let them gel/wax me afterwards, but just give them a 20 and let them keep the change.
There was a big jar of small cash in front of the cashregister, and I asked the girl behind the desk if this jar was for some sort of good cause, helping out hungry kids in Africa orso, or if it was to tips the girls there, when she said if was for the girls, I instantly dropped my change in there  , with a few extra small coins I had left
Barbers are for men, hairdressers are for women.
That's the way it used to be, now barbers are rare and hairdressers are unisex. Heh, I remember when I was a kid hairdressers used to have to specify "unisex".
How would you differentiate those 2 based on price..?

I guess you could have hair like someone in a 80's rock band, then i guess even though you are a guy you would still have to pay women prices.

Barbers: clipper cuts and men's hairstyles, no blowdrying, no curling, no roller sets, no chemical treatments.
Stylists: do all of the above.
In general, there are different licensing requirements for barbers and stylists.

Well, its not that extreme, although I do prefer looking at my best, all day, every day. I'm just really vain.

My hair grows v...e...r...y slowly; my scalp hair gains an inch a year if I'm lucky. I go to the local Beauty school to deal with split ends every year or so. They charge $7. I usually tip the student a buck or 2, more if they do a good job following my instructions. On my most recent cut, I tipped the guy $5 because he ignored what his instructor told him to do and did what I wanted. (I had told him to deal with the split ends and to try to take less than an inch. At the halfway point she came over and told him "Just cut straight across at this level and it will be fine." He gave her the "yeah, right" look as she walked away and continued to do exactly what he had been doing.) I go to the local barber every few months to get my beard trimmed. It only takes him a few minutes. He charges $4, I give him $5.

I don't see anything wrong with being a little vain. My wife says i'm vain all the time because i always fix my hair in the morning. I mean wtf, I have to fix my hair so i don't go to work looking like i just got straight out of bed and came in!

My hair grows real fast. I have to have a hair cut once a month which is a lot imo. I wish there was a way of decently cutting your own hair without using ten mirrors.
I don't think I've ever heard of a man worrying about (or having, for that matter) split ends.
Oops. I misread the thread title. I thought it read "Tripping barbers," because all I can think about when I go in there is them tripping and smashing their sharp shears into my eyes.
I don't tip. I pay someone I know that cuts hair.

I was once told I had split ends. I ignored it and I doubt it affected me negatively at all.

I have the kind of hair that most women want: thick and fluffy with lots of body. What I want is hair that's limp, flat, and totally dead. Getting rid of the split ends makes my hair lie flatter and makes it not pull out so easily.
