 everyone

I have barely posted at all lately, and D2 has been collecting dust as well. But still, I sometimes feel the urge to play this game a bit, and I occasionally check the forums too (a habit I can't get rid of... ).

Before I left, I was one of those few HC MP'ers and I hosted a bunch of games too (some people even liked them  ). I liked it a lot, there is nothing like playing this game in a relaxed manner with good people. That is what I enjoy the most in this game, and I want to experience more of it.

I don't want to drown into D2 again though, so I thought a MP group which meets on weekends to play couple of hours would be perfect. A group where people can try out different things, a group who doesn't stress over beating the game. A group who might build bunch of non-standard/weird characters. A group which wants to have *fun*.

Hardcore Weekend Fun

Rules & stuff (comments & ideas, please! I'm sure I have forgotten something)

v1.11b
HC
RWM+RRM
untwinked
preferably 4+ players
play as a part of the team. Team is *the* thing
single pass (?)
full clears (?)

I'm not completely sure about the single pass/full clear rules. I want the team plays together if possible. Also, multiple people doing bossruns on everchanging map can get tedious very fast. In my opinion it would be more enjoyable to advance further all the time and use the drops as we see best.

build any character you want, but please read the following 2 rules
please, no cookie-cutter builds! (mainly LFzon, LgtTrapper, Skellymancer, single tree sorcs, hammerdin, maybe others)
I'd prefer having great variety of character classes in the group, but this is not necessary
different mercenaries to prevent overuse of certain weapon types

I don't want to have the game filled with standard characters. I want to see an unique group of adventurers and how they manage to work together, not a 100% optimized party of killing machines.

Additionally, I have played in an untwinked group where one guy was playing a lightning sorc. The end result wasn't enjoyable, the sorc killed everything while we tried to keep up with her and collect the items left on the ground.

I'd like to see people to try something new, something creative even! The strength of the party will greatly help you to overcome the weaknesses of your build.

the group has a leader (host?), and the other party members follow him instead of soloing and waiting the others to go his/her way
if someone dies, his/her items will be looted and used for the benefit of the survivors

The first rule is there to enhance the teamplay. I don't particularly like chaotic games (sometimes they end up like that but organized ones are preferred).

Any interest in this kind of thing? Any ideas, suggestions?

I'm in. Of course if you let me play with you:wink3:

How about I build an cleric? You said team play:laugh:

And I just love the last two rules:thumbsup:, I'll probably be the one who will die but who cares!?

And I don't really understand that Single Pass thing. Does that mean you can't Baal run or?

Darkboo: single pass means that you can't clear any area more than once.

I want to keep the repetition of areas at minimum, but I'm not going to nitpick about the rules I posted. Few baalruns at the end of difficulty level is not a problem.

I know one guy who might join...I'll inform him soon about this.

I'm GMT +2...lag & timezone issues will be lesser for europen people (assuming I host the games), but I chose the weekend for more flexibility (and players).

And what do you say about this rule?

All drops go to host, who then decides to whom the drop would benefit the most. That's one BIG responsibility for a host, but we all know you're up for the challenge:wink3:

And it would be cool, if we could have a table of who might join this and what build he would play or something... Preventing two same builds in the party... Imagine having all Blizzsorces:dizzy:

The amount of items picked up will be much higher than in "normal" play because of the untwinked nature of this group. Much lesser items can help us, and we need to sell them to get gold for repairs/gambling/etc. If only the host picked up items...bit too much work for one person I think.

Actually, I was thinking of opposite, one player picking/cubing gems and distributing them to the needy, another guy for runes and so on. That way we would know much better what we have at our disposal, and everyone would have a bit more meaninful things to do. I don't know how well this would work though...seeing our rune-guy to bite dust would suck. Again, I'm open for ideas.

And it would be cool, if we could have a table of who might join this and what build he would play or something... Preventing two same builds in the party...

Sure, I only wanted to find out the amount of interest first  I'll insert an info table into this post.

Imagine having all Blizzsorces:dizzy:

Even though I'm not going to be an *** regarding the rules, there are reasons (other than making the post longer) why I put them there :wink3:

The recent ladder reset was one of those things which brought this idea to my mind. I played on Bnet for awhile when it reseted last time, and I can sum it all up very effectively:

Competition & blizz sorcs.

Replace the competition with cooperation and blizzsorcs with variety, that is the thing I want to see in this group.

I don't require anyone to come up with some superrare/undone build, I only ask them avoid the most popular ones for untwinked playing.

And I love the idea of picking up the drops:thumbsup:

About the times... I'm available the whole day (8 am to 10 pm) but, there are short time intervals when I'm unavailable(half an hour). For me probably the best time would be after 5pm to 10am, but as said I'm available the whole day, if half an hour isn't a big problem...

I want to try out spreading little tasks/resposibilty to other players, so...one of us will handle all the runes, someone else keeps track of gems...jewels and charms could be treated in same way. We can decide the "jobs" when we start playing (if you don't already know what you want to do and say it out loud here  ). good idea... I've wanted to try a hydra sorc for a long time. I'm not sure about the backup skill yet, but it won't be FO... I'm considering going enchant/melee, although it kindof breaks your rule of no-single-tree sorcs. CB perhaps?

BTW, I won't be available on July 21st (for certain), and possibly this coming Saturday/weekend. If we get a schedule set up, I think that would be very helpful. Also, I'm in favour of the limited re-runs approach... MF = boring, IMO.

Well, I don't completely detest single-tree sorcs in this group. If they are based on less popular skills and they are not significantly more powerful than the other characters (including meleers), no problems. I'm not going to prevent a Nova/TS/ES sorc from entering this for example, even thought it is pure lightning build. The ones I don't want to see in any case are the standard single-tree builds (heavily/max synergized blizz/mateor/fireball/lightning/chain lightning).

I want that everyone in the group can kill (hopefully at equal rate), I don't want to see characters who end up as being walking auras or pre-buff machines. If someone chooses to play such a build on purpose, fine. If that happens because some guy chose ridiculously powerful build, not good, not at all. I know keeping this all completely balanced is impossible, but I'll do my best without limiting choices too much.

Hmm, I admit, the rules could be a bit clearer, but when I was writing them I was tired and I had way too may things running in my mind. But when the HCWF-II is about to start, I'll post updated rules for sure

Yep, I'm trying to figure out a timeframe of ~3 hours, and when a good one is found, that's the one we will stick with. As for re-runs, maybe few Baal runs at the end of difficulty, and that's it pretty much.

Static Orber, should be interesting, probably need a 3rd skill. Fireball maybe.

Not far from meteorb, but if you put a good amount of skillpoints (10+) into SF it is completely acceptable, party friendly build in every way  edit: I like sirpoops' suggestion more though

DaveW, did you ever try FireWall? If you're going for a 3rd tree, that's the one I recommend. And with other people to act as tanks, it's pretty easy to aim (and you'd be farther from a cookie-cutter build). I have a lvl93 CL/FW sorc, and I'm of the firm opinion that FW is very underratted by many who aren't familiar with it.

Edit:
Well, I don't completely detest single-tree sorcs in this group. If they are based on less popular skills and they are not significantly more powerful than the other characters (including meleers), no problems.

FireMastery is the only shared synergy between Enchant and Hydra, so I doubt it would have dominant killing speeds (especially since most cookie-cutter sorcs tend to avoid both skills). I might consider Nova as a backup too - I've never tried it either, and always wanted to. I just know I'd like to get away from FO/cold as a backup, for a change.

However, I understand the point you're trying to make... the goal is to have balance for everyone, which should make it more fun for everyone. I'm in complete agreement.

Edit2: @Darkoooo, would you consider making it a Cleric/Hybrid? Is it even possible? I'm not even familiar with the build though, so I don't know if you're stretched on skillpoints as is.

I'm not saying I'm against you playing a cleric; I'm just trying to provide some food for thought.

Guilty as charged...

I won't have any offensive skills therefore I won't be able to kill, but I should be able to heal you all, and hopefully no one will see the deeds screen. Is my build maybe banned from the party rules?

edit: Thanks LprMan, it's always a pleasure to MP with you:flowers:

No. You chose to play that build, because you want to play it. If the fact your character is not able to kill fast is based on your *own* decision, it is all fine. If someone brings a retardedly poweful character into the game, rendering others useless and unable to kill, that is not good.

Blergh, I suck at this :embarassed:

edit: np, darkoo, sometimes (meh, who I'm kidding, *often* is the word) I write too long and too confusing posts, and after typing all that I'm not sure even myself what I wanted to say  I hope we can get a good team of balanced characters and have fun while playing together. If I can make that happen, I'm as happy as can be.

Finally got around to mess with skill calculator a bit. My original plan was to go 20 poison creeper/rabies/fury and distribute the rest between hearth of the wolverine/lycantropy/werewolf. Now seeing that HoW would only benefit me and damage gain wouldn't be that noticable even if i happen to find a decent weapon. Lprman's PS sin will easily outdamage me (think i know what im talking about, having played two PS sins, playing third atm) i came up with a different skill allocation.

20 - Poison creeper
20 - Rabies
20 - Fury
5-6 - Lycantropy
1+ - Werewolf (or dump more here in case i find some godly weapon and need to reach certain breakpoint)
10+ - Oak sage
13+ - Dire wolf
1 - grizzly

Done at level 85 or so. Tell me what you think, im far from an expert when talking about druids .

Edit: what about block? Totally confused here...

Looks ok to me, but on the other hand, I have never played a fury/rabies hybrid :undecided: I have Patted multiple pure furywolves though. Druids have slow block rate in werewolf form, but getting high enough resistances is going to be hard without a shield. One option is to use shield and not raise dex for blocking.

Polished ruleset:

~HCWF Rules~
************

Version rules

v1.11b
HC
RWM & RRM

Gameplay rules

single pass
full clears
untwinked, only the items found by team can be used to equip characters
ATMA can be used as an extended stash

Team rules

preferably 4+ players in a team
play as a part of the team. Team is *the* thing
the group has a leader. Other party members follow him instead of soloing and waiting the others to go his/her way. The leader sets the pace of the game, tells where to go, and so on. The host of the game is the leader by default, but other's can do it as well
professions! One player picks up all runes, stores them, cubes them up appropriately, and distributes them to other players as needed. Same principle can be applied to gems, jewel and charms. This way the party will know better what they have at their disposal, and there is more meaningful things to do for team members
characters are only meant to be played with the team. Advancing further/leveling/MFing solo in not allowed. You can do gambling and shopping in SP whenever you want though
if someone dies, his/her items will be looted and used for the benefit of the survivors

Character build rules

please, no cookie-cutter builds! For most part, that means LFzon, pure LgtTrapper, necro with high lvl CE, heavily/fully synergized blizz/meteor/fireball/lightning/chain lightning, hammerdin, maybe some others. Basically the ones which are able to tear apart hells legions solo in low/mediocre quality gear.
I'd prefer having great variety of character classes in the group, but I don't mind if we have 2 of the same class
different mercenaries to prevent overuse of certain weapon types
other than that, feel free to build whatever character you want!

Erm, won't we have only one tank? Online with his Fury/Rabies druid... I would really want to build cleric cause party will never ran out of mana, and if I do a good job life:rolleyes:. But if no one else can't be a tank, I suppose I can build a Barb with maxed BO, Iron Skin, 10 points in Natural Resistance, and all the remaining points into Frenzy and it's synergys? Would that be allowed? And I don't expect someone to do this but, I think that Cleric is a true team build, so I advise we have it in our team... If I would remain the Cleric, it would be hard with only one tank, so my guess someone should build this Barb, or if he has a better idea... If no one wants to be a tank, I could build this Barb, but then we won't have a Cleric, and that's a big loss... I'm not forcing anyone to play the build he doesn't want to... Just an idea... Enough talking:tongue:. If you guys think we'll be ok with only one tank ok...

And yes, that time fits for me too...

We'll have minions, a lot of merc's and skills to do the tanking. We actually had the best tank in DD, but no there's an open spot for a barbarian. I'd say stick with the pally.

Also.. not tomorrow night right? Since.. I won't be here heh

My assassin is melee too, so I think she counts as a tank. Add the act2/act5 mercs, summons and crowd control skills on top of that. No worries IMHO. I'd say stick with the cleric build. I have never seen a cleric in action, and this group leans more to the experimental side than optimization. If you still want to switch over to a barb, choose any build you wish. I haven't restricted barbs (or druids) in any way.

My original plan was to start tomorrow :undecided: I could wait for the next weekend, but I'm not sure if all others are as patient.

Ive made a change which doesnt impact on the team dynamic. Im going Orb, Static and Fireball. Its a tri-tree build that offers the chill factor, some heat and a little life sapping, esp. good for our tanks. I will abide with the synergy maxing rules laid out. This is gonna be cool. One last thing, the game is 8pm to 11pm GMT+2. That means 6am-9am Sunday morning for me, right. No problem. Gotta get a early nights sleep.

Well I am going another route wih my build. I think the Orber-Fireball route is pretty standard. I just played with the Skills calculator and I think this build is viable
Glacial Spkie 10pts
Frost Nova 10 pts
Static 20 points
Firewall 20 points (Interesting, no synergy)
Some into warmth, frozen armour. Serve while hot. CYas 2moro.

Is this considered cookie-cutter?
Skeleton Mastery 20
Raise Skeleton 20
Raise Skeletal Mage 20
Revive 1
Clay Golem 1
Golem Mastery 1
Summon Resist 1
Corpse Explosion 20
1 in every Curse

Total of 95 skill points, rdy at 84 (right?)

Hi I would also like to join the fun. I would really love to make a magemancer:
20 skeletal mage
20 skeletal mastery
20 lower resist
6 summon resist
1 golem mastery (maybe more needed)
20 fire golem (or how many max mana I have)
rest summon resist
0 in bone and poison skills.

still have to decide about merc, 3cold or 2HF.

But I see Sint and maybe Murre allready makes a necro and that might be a problem with curses and items.
My second choice would be a smiter, but they may be to cookie cutter.
I'm also open to other interesting builds, tell me!

edit:
the magenecromancer might make the party a little but too powerfull with the lower resist and smiter seemed boring after second thought, now, I'm thinking about a blade sentinel assassin, allready made one in the random tournament, but now I could make one without all these restrictions, and see the real strength (uhh weaknesses) of this build. It will be max blade sentinel and shadow skills.

edit2: forget my previous edit, venom is not a good idea with allready a poisonzon and rabies druid. It's hard to choose a build! Maybe just go with magemancer.

edit3: summondruid is also option :)

If Sint drops out, the 8th place is for me, right?

And I got mixed about my times, too. I will be able to play today, but next weekend is impossible. The weekend after that might be problematic, but I think I can make it back home from Ilosaarirock nearly by the time the game begins.

Also, the necromancer spot is kinda dubious atm, so if nobody else takes it, I'll do it. (@ EasyGijs, I think participants are taken in the order of signing up, You're 9th after Sint and DD dropping out.)

Otherwise, I'll make a frenzy barb because DeadDave pulled out from the group with his singer barb. A source of BO would be useful, methinks.

Yep, it is. Very easy build even with bad gear, and exactly those are the ones I want to restrict from joining.

The character build rules have caused some confusion, so when this group is done and I can start planning the next one, I will post more clear set of rules on the build restrictions. I made a rough template yesterday already, it needs some polishing but the core idea is there. It doesn't help this group too much anymore, but I'll PM the new build rules to you, hopefully it helps.

Nope, definitely not when playing untwinked. And they are hardly cookie-cutter in general PvM anyways.

Ok. Not being able to play in 2 consecutive games would be problematic, I'd like to keep the group intact. Another option is not to play at all in those 2 weeks, but it will already take long enough to advance in the game this way :undecided:

I'm not sure if MuRRe has a new build idea which would fit within the rules either

An enjoyable experience. I arrived late but still managed to get to cl17 before finishing. Often I was lagging behind the rest of the group, because I need to look at keys when I type messages. By the time I look up the team has moved on. I had one NDE (wasnt too bad; got to about 1/2 a red globe)

Anyway full clears were the order of the day. We have tankers in front, an Assassin, Barb and Druid in WereBear form. Some Skellie Mages courtesy of the local necro, and a couple of sorcs bringing up the rear. We have a scout (Bowazon aka INstalled). Well I think he is a scout. I watched him hit the Outer Cloister WP at speed, without stopping and kept running full boar. COOL. And our Pally (our Pal and yours) keeps things on the healthy side for us. He shoots an energy burst that heals and casts an aura that helps with life regeneration I think.
Different members of the team have specific duties. Gem collector, charm collector and jewel collector. They collect and distribute to the team according to each persons needs. I received some saphires to help with my mana pool (socketed armour and helm)
We dont move unless we all move together, which is what all good teams do. And we have a leader too which all good teams have as well. The basis for this project was to try different builds. My sorc is going SF, Glacial Spike, Frost Nova and FireWall. Despite this deliberate underpowering by all players, the team is a force to be reckoned with. Because it moves en masse and with singular purpose.
We finished up at the Catacombs WP. And will re-commence same time, same day next weekend. Can't wait.

I discussed the problem of player availability with sirpoops.

We have a party of 8 people, and it is certain that not all of them are available every Saturday to play. With the current way of handling things, that leaves us 2 options:

Continue with incomplete party and let those who couldn't join catch up others solo. Works ok on normal difficulty, but becomes very hard/impossible on NM and especially on hell. Doesn't follow the rules too closely either.
Cancel the game for that particular weekend. We would be able to continue as a full team all the time, but it might slow us down a lot.

We got few ideas, some weren't too good, but then sirpoops suggested something effective and simple enough:

The team needs all 8 characters. Every character needs someone to play it. What if a player is missing? Get someone else to play that character!

So, if you know you are not able to play next weekend, try to find someone who can lend a helping hand. Send your character to him/her, tell how you were going to develop the character. Then inform us about it. Of course, this requires you to willingly let someone else to play your character. Also, I have no idea how many would volunteer to help in this kind of thing. We would be able to play every weekend, with full team though.

What do you think, is the idea doomed? Would you rather use the old ways? And if you happen to have better idea(s), be sure to post them here

Darkoooo
01-07-2007, 21:10

I know Jaago is not available on next weekend. We are still on normal, so it is not a huge problem. I'm sure he can solo a bit if necessary. Doing the same in hell act 2 would be a completely different matter.

Also, not everyone knows people very well on the forums, which makes finding a volunteer much harder for them. If couple of guys/gals signed up here as avalable extra players for emergencies...that would be great

That's an interesting idea. And it works, to boot. Unfortunately, I can't let anyone play my character next weekend because I have already made some progress soloing. I really had to because I might not have very much time to do it before the next time I will be attending. (Only on the Friday before that Saturday, probably.) If I just had waited for one day...

It would utterly suck if the substitute player got deeds with my character, though.

Yes, that is true. All the options have downsides, now we have to pick the one which is best for us (and which we can get working).

perhaps we don't need a team-wide consensus...

I'm relatively new to HC, and very new to MP, so my expectations are that if someone dies playing my character, the odds are fairy high that I would have also died in the same situation. It's not like that person would be trying to get killed, so there won't be any hard feelings on my part.

However, if other team members are more comfortable trying to "keep up" playing solo, I personally have no objections to that approach either.

I just brought the discussion up with LprMan because I thought it would be very crappy if after several months of effort we start to loose people to "drifting interests". Obviously, there isn't going to be perfect attendance for everyone during the next several months (potentially), so it'd be nice to have a plan for avoiding this obstacle - before we trip over it.

BTW, does anyone have any objections if I try to recruit a "substitute player" for the weekend I'm away (July 21st)? err... assuming poopsetta lives that long... let's not count that chicken yet... :nervous:

agreed, but there is one optimal solution: don't miss any weekends

I can't agree with you more. All you need to do is find a person you trust, so you feel comfortable with the fact that he/she's playing your character. I wouldn't have any problems borrowing Prayer to a person who I trust, cause I know he'll be in good hands. Just my 2 cents.

Being the arrogant freak I am, I'm somewhat reluctant to let others play my character and would prefer to catch up solo. There, however will be times when I simply won't be anywhere around the computer for week or two. I don't really know anyone who i could trust with my character, so if there is any volunteers, let me know.

@ poops: I hope I didn't offend you with my post. I truly love your idea and I also agree with what you said about substitute player deeding. (I'm nearly a total HC noob myself and haven't MP'd before at all in SP.) To answer your question, I have nothing against you (or anybody else) recruiting substitutes.

@ Darkoooo: You wouldn't really have any options either. :brainiac:

If you're really afraid to lose your character, you can always ask someone like Insane Wayne or Superdave (or any HC veteran, for that matter) to play your character. Safer than in your momma's arms.

Nope, not at all. I'm just trying to figure out a good way around a potential problem. I think I've made my ideas and opinions clear, and the path I hope to take - but as far as I'm concerned, everyone else is free to choose their own path.

I'll only be offended if someone completely "drops out" for no real reason (well, mildly-offended ). I do understand there are extenuating circumstances, but there's nothing like leaving your buddies up the proverbial creek.

that said, I expect my hard-drive to explode sometime around when we enter Hell difficulty - or something equivallent - forcing me to drop out and having irony kick me in the arse (since I seem to be the biggest preacher about this).

wow, didn't think about this one, will this work on mages? (you never know with blizzard)

I have no idea, actually.

Other than in-town, I doubt we'll be able to try much enchanting for quite a few acts. Currently the mana cost will be too high to maintain Enchant for everyone and their minions, and throw fireballs around while questing... I'll definitely try to keep it up on our melee chars next week, and maybe a merc or two if my mana pool permits. It'll probably be a while before I can do much else with Enchant though. I want to pursue the Hydra portion of my build first anyways - pro'ly Hydra, FM and Fireball max'ed, then Enchant.

I felt like a mana-potion-hog the other day just trying to keep a few fireballs flying (speaking of which, if anyone needs a mana potion or two, let me know - I try to keep 6-8 in my inventory for when my belt runs empty - which it did a few times). If we ever get an Insight merc, I intend to hug him and never let go.

Also, FYI everyone. It's been ~40 Celcius here for the last couple days. If this hot weather continues, my computer is prone to sudden, unexpected, immediate, and complete shutdowns (I think it's a safety setting to keep the CPU from burning up). I have every intent on participating this week, but mother nature might have other plans... if I do drop suddenly 20 minutes into the game, just keep playing - I'll need to catch up solo at night, when it's cooler.

Hi Team I can play this weekend. and Im looking forward to it. I havent soloed any with Eternal, my tri-elementalist. Im thinking of making glacial my main cold spell, SF and FW and dropping FN. No. Melee and ranged only, no casters.

If you guys are really, really in need of someone to back you up in case someone leaves then drop me a pm. Last line of defence though, I'm sure others will want to pick someone theirselfs or pick someone other then me. Now I know what the Deeds screen is: My deeds will long be remembered.
The day didnt start out well, woke up late and got to the game after the team had finished the Summoner quest. But I was still able to get Canyon Wp. Funnily enough, 5 minutes before dying, I was thinking about Duriel and how much i hate going to battle him. Anyway it was a damn scarab beetle with Charged Bolt that got me. And I wasn't even in the same room as them. I was hoping to level and add some life. I was just about to level too. Hope the team can salvage the Stealth from my body. All the best to everyone.

Hi all in the SPF!

I may be way out of line here, but I frequently read the SPF forum posts. I started my D2 life in single player, took a by-the-book cookie-cutter Fishymancer to Patriarch and then abruptly stopped for a few years. Started D2 again almost a year ago (wow, been that long?). Playing on Bnet right now with a friend of mine, but thinking of playing multi-player if I can find a group. Anyway, that's the 40,000 foot overview of me.

I have read all 131 posts in this thread over lunch at work. I started reading this thread (http://forums.diabloii.net/showthread.php?t=572101) which lead me to this thread.

I see that you're having trouble keeping the gang together at the same level and thought I would offer an option. Again, this may be out of line and already discussed in-game or something. For those that have fallen behind, and aren't effective solo, could a mini-group get together during the week following the missed week to catch that player (or that player's character) up to the appropriate level? At least as far as quests go, so that you could continue to venture forward. Depending on the disparity between levels, the missing player may still be able to catch up in experience, too. If I understand multi-play correctly, you should be able to set /players8 in the mini-game to increase the exp. This would have a couple of drawbacks:

1) The catchers-uppers would have to re-run areas (against the full-game rules)
2) The catchers-uppers may gain extra experience, resulting in level disparities.

Of course the major factor here is whether two or more of you can find time during the week to play catch up. I would anticipate that you wouldn't do full clears (again) and could get to the right questing area relatively quickly. A benefit I just thought of would be that the person/character that fell behind could then, in single play, use any waypoints gained in the mini/rush game to go to an area where they may be able to be more effective at killing to gain levels.

I like the HCWF format, and thought it was an interesting concept and thought of joining up, but I see you're two or three weeks/games into it, so I guess not. I'm used to playing in groups on bnet, but have never once played a hardcore character. I also don't know what my availablility is on the weekends (I'm in USA Central time, so that would mean you play 11am - 3pm? I suck at this GMT thing).

Anyways, I guess I'll mosey on now. Thanks for listening. Make sure you recap your progress in the forums for others to read!

P.S. This is actually my 2nd posting in the SPF, my first being many months ago and I didn't realize it was in the SPF.

P.P.S. *Applies shin-guards and prepares to evade any incomming kicks:jig:

I see that you're having trouble keeping the gang together at the same level and thought I would offer an option.

I don't mind a difference of few levels between characters, I only want they all have advanced to the area/quest before each game, so we can continue onwards from the same point as a group.

Basically, now we know of 4 feasible ways to solve the problem:

Someone else plays the character
Solo
Missing people send me their characters, and I run multiple D2 to join my own game with them
Available people of the group help the ones who were missing from the last game

They are in order of preference, in a way.

Problem regarding the 4th option: what if the player who was missing is unable to host a game? Then no-one from the group can help him/her to complete the quests.

Yes, we can use p8 for more exp and items. The main problem I have with your idea is the the fact it doesn't follow the rules (singlepass). However, if breaking them every now and then means the group...umm...stays grouped (eh eh), I'm all for it. The group will gather every Saturday for couple of months at least, with many people from different timezones etc etc. It is impossible to get this kind of thing to run 100% smoothly all the time. The rules make things even trickier, so all help is very welcome.

Of course the major factor here is whether two or more of you can find time during the week to play catch up. I would anticipate that you wouldn't do full clears (again) and could get to the right questing area relatively quickly.

Yeah, I would prefer it that way, just quickly get to the destination and finish the quests. The "main group" has already done full clears of the areas.

Well, one of us has died, so in theory, someone *could* join. You'd need to catch us up somehow, and in the end, another player joining now doesn't relly follow the rules either. If you want to try, well, I'm not opposing you...as long as you have a appropriate build, of course  (I think the game would be 1pm-4pm your time (GMT-5, right?))

I decided to do my HF quest immediately. Thul = not bad. Not sure if we'll have enough for an Insight with everyones contributions. I found an Ith along the way as well. However, the purpose of this spam:

LPR, can you be sure to bring a chipped amethyst next week - I'd like to upgrade my merc weapon to the Savage Partizan of Alacrity that was cubed once upon a time, and he'll need a small boost to Str.

@Darkooo: I hope so :)

I decided to restrict picking up items to magic and rare items, since that way it will fit better with the single pass rule. Now I just had to drop a Sol Rune (I would love Lore) and a SkyStrike (197ed), which would fit our Magezon perfectly. Let's see what more items I'll have to leave behind.

No, that discussion hasn't come up yet.

Although I'm enjoying this a lot (my first exposure to MP, with a style of play and light-hearted conversation, as well as "rules" that fit my preferences for D2), I have to say I don't think I'd sign-up again... I'm finding that setting aside 3 hours right in the middle of every Saturday is a little more "commitment" than I accounted for. Once I get a job and/or when ski season rolls around... I don't like to ponder quite yet, even though it's quickly becoming a reality.

Mostly, I figured I'd be dead by now. :wink3:

However, if you want a taste of HCWF...

Are you available this week? I think there is a HUGE ski-equipment convention for the upcoming season, I need new boots, and I think the grand-opening is Saturday at 11:00 - which is just when we're due to begin our HCWF session. I need to confirm those details, but if I go to that, I'll be looking for someone to step in and play my hydrasorc for this week.

Interested? Let me know your email addy and I'll let you know within a day or two. I can't promise anything yet, as my internet searches have been fruitless (tomorrow I'll call the store).

DuesNox

I'm free yes, but I don't know if Im willing to play someone elses character in NM. Normal, I can make through with almost any character, but NM is different. It will make me slightly nervous, but, from experience, is playing HC in a large group much easier than solo?

I thank SPF for all the HC tourney's that I have participated in.

It does however, make me feel better knowing that I'd be playing a ranged character. Still a hydra sorc?

Email is Tanis788@yahoo.com and your all playing LOD V1.11 (no mods) correct?

Let me know just what you do for the group, (Enchant?) and if you want skill points in one particular skill, and I'll do my best to stay out of the line of fire.

sirpoopsalot
28-08-2007, 00:52
Sorry to be a tease - it turns out the convention starts at 8:00, so if I get my arse out of bed then I should be back home in plenty of time for this weeks' session. :embarassed: If I do miss a week, you can have first chance to sub in (I'll drop you a PM as soon as I know).

To answer your other questions:
We do use the RRM/RWM mods, plus whatever h4xx & drop-mods our host (LprMan) has installed.

So far, I'd say that group-play is quite a bit safer for a sorc. We have quite a few tanks, so I don't have to be as anal about controlling my merc to keep him between me and the monsters - there are usually 2-4 other 'bodies' already there. My ~600 Hydra damage isn't anything to sneeze at either (at least in mid-NM), and we seem to be a pretty cooperative bunch, so we can often count on help (such as Darkoooo & my 2-minute-epic battle against a single, stray FireTower this past week while everyone else was already in town ).

As for poopsetta's role within the party:
- try to keep everyone enchanted, especially LprMan and Jaago
- keep near the front during transportation to drop an early hydra around corners or through doors (forewarning + damage support for our front-runners).
- stay out of everyones way since she has teleport and they don't.
- need to use Teleport a little more to force my A2 merc near the front-lines too, but I'm still working on that (I am MP-noob).
- During battle, try to pick on the "pain in the butt" monsters like Shamen or Unraveller's, as well as throw down 2-4 supporting hydras for Jaago & Lpr (and maybe even draw a monster or two's attention if it's a big crowd).

Hi,
this weekend and next weekend i can't join the HCWF, sorry for coming up with that so late.
If anyone is interested in playing a Magemancer for two weekend plz post in this forum and I would be more as happy if someone could substitute for me. You absolutely don't have to be worried about dieing. These things happen in HC.

The tasks my Witch Ondor has:
-casting lower resist at al mosters
-summon some mages and firegolem for some added damage.
-having equiped a lot of mf and open all possible chests and stuff.

-picking up and cubing gems
-from now on rerolling and crafting

The next skillpoints can go in:
-lower resist
or
-Fire Golem
or
-summon resist

If noone responds before tomorrow afternoon I'll send him to LPRMan and you can still contact him until saturdaynight

If still noone responds, I guess HCWF has to do without LR for two weekends and I'll try to catch up for over 3 weeks (diablo yukkie)

As for my shopping expedition... meh, that was mostly a futile 45 minutes just to purchase 8 magic Sharkskin belts for crafting. At least I was able to sell that Crimson Belt of the Fox, or whatever POS it was I was wearing, but the crafts weren't anything to write home about. I almost ended up wearing an Ocher Belt of the Whale or Garnet Demonhide Sash of the Colossus that I bought. Then I did the math and realized the extra 9% FCR on my new belt pushes me over the 63 FCR breakpoint... woot, now I can teleport to my lag's content :p. The one I'm wearing also has PResist and PLR.

Three other crafts had 1-2 semi-redeeming mods, so if you want one, make a request. Otherwise I'll bring them next week and sell them then.

#1. +8 Str, 24% CResist, 10 FCR
#2. +28 Life, 5% PResist, 9 FCR
#3. 17 FHR, 5 FCR
... and those were the good ones. The other 4 crafts spawned with lovely mods like +Stamina and %ED... just what a growing boy needs. Unfortunately none of our characters really qualifies as a growing boy.

Those magics are available too:
Ocher Belt of the Whale (11% LResist, +88 Life)
Garnet Demonhide Sash of the Colossus (25% FResist, +45 Life)

*****
@LprMan, while I was shopping for belts there were a couple of pairs of gloves that might interest you (you said you might someday want an upgrade).

Kenshi's Heavy Gloves of Fortune (+3 MA / 25 MF)
Sensei's Heavy Gloves of Thawing (+2 MA / Half freeze duration)
... and another general pair: Garnet Heavy Gloves of the Leech (28 FRes / 3% LLeech).

I know... they're nothing breath-taking. But for someone shopping for belts, I thought they were ok. Want?

*****
@EasyGijs

I still have that necro circlet posted earlier - I'll bring it for you. Also, this week I picked up a Bone Wand with 20 FCR and +2 Fire Golem... not sure if it's useful to you, but you can have/sell. Finally, how's your merc weapon? In the first ~10 minutes today we had Pierre's Partizan and Blackleach Bill drop, so that means I upgraded from what Gulzar was using:

Savage Partizan of Alacrity
Two-Hand Damage: 57 to 126
69% ED
20 IAS

... need?

Hell difficulty is going to be challenging

EDIT:

What should we do with the runes? I checked the runewords we could make and these are the most useful ones (I hope I didn't miss any):

Black
Harmony
Passion
Treachery
Voice of Reason

The following ones are missing one low-ish rune and/or require some cubing)

Honor
Lawbringer
Smoke
Spirit

Another Insight is not too bad idea either, IMHO.

Jaago
23-09-2007, 00:15
I'd rather make the honor so I'd finally be able to kill something.

Or maybe we should wait for a Lo to make a Fortitude

If somebody wants a smoke i can cube that Lum for next time.

Spirit shields are probably out because of the requirements, but if somebody wants a sword, we can make one when Amns start appearing.

sirpoopsalot
23-09-2007, 04:27
I'd rather make the honor so I'd finally be able to kill something.

*sigh*
... you're so demanding.

... actually, this does seem like one of the most useful contributions to the welfare and balance of our party, and therefore possibly the best use. However, we also have the runes for Passion - would the (probably) higher damage, 25 IAS, and bonus to AR% be worth the lost LLeech, Deadly Strike, and +1 skill on Honor? ... it's just a thought.

FYI, a Spirit sword would only be a ~medium upgrade over my current orb (the Hydra skill and FCR breakpoints are the same with either), so I wouldn't gain much benefit with it. And actually, since my resists are ~ok even without Darkoooo (17/44/26/36), I kindof like the FCR and FRW on Stealth, so Smoke isn't that great of an upgrade for me at this time.

In other words, I think my current equipment is acceptable (as long as I can continue to hug Prayer's leg/aura). If you guys want/need the runes to improve your setups, I think it would be a good idea to use them however you see fit.

If there is one area that I could definitely use an upgrade, it would be my mercs helm... currently he's wearing a Sturdy Great Helm of Frost Shield (i.e. 14% ctc Frost Nova - woot he's a real bad*ss!!! ). A Blood-helm would be a sure upgrade, so if we do have a spare Ral and Perfect Ruby, I wouldn't mind it. However, Gulzar's only died 2-3 times so far, and he already has some LifeLeech, so it really is a low priority to me - as far as I'm concerned, it's much more important if you guys need a Ral/PRuby to improve your own situation.

@Darkoooo, I picked up an Akaran Targe with 3os and +44 resists about the time you droped out. Want? You could make Ancient's Pledge and get great resists (possibly freeing up that circlet for someone else who may need it *nudge, nudge* - actually, I like my current coronet, so I'm mostly kidding about the nudges).

I also grabbed a pair of crappy sharkskin gloves in case anyone needs/wants to craft blood gloves. I got Wirt's leg too.

BTW Jaago, I should be sending you an email tomorrow.

Edit:
PS. EasyGijs, let us know if you'll be able to make it this week - I have a few items that I've picked up that may help you, so I'll either bring or stash them, as needed.

LprMan
23-09-2007, 10:36
My ideas at this point:

Maybe replace the Might merc with Prayer merc (downsides: less physical damage for our party). Give him the Insight we have (I'm not talking about making a merc smarter...ehheh). Then Darkoooo can start using a weapon (maybe Spirit or some nice scepter?) and shield (3xPD / Ancient's Pledge in that shield poops picked up) combo to survive better. We would still have our blue bulbs filled. And hopefully the ones containing crimson nectar too
Get rid of Salvation in general use! Read on...
We have a good bunch of unused socketing quests. Maybe now it is time to poke holes into our itamz and fill them with gems, runes and/or good jewels
Smoke could be a very good armor for Gijs. I don't know wht kind of resists his necro has, but a 3PD shield and Smoke give positive numbers in hell.
For Jaago we have 2 options: Passion or Honor+Treachery. I vote for the latter. Good damage, more IAS, Venom, Fade...a very good boost for our barb. I guess the ctc Fade will work reliably on a melee char, giving 60% (?) all res and 15% DR.
We did find a 4os gothic plate? I'd fill it with res stuff and give it to poops.
Crafting? We could try something. But merc of poops can get a better headgear from vendors.

After reading what I just wrote: Treachery + Honor + Smoke + Spirit =

Shael
2x Thul
Lem
2x Amn
El
Ith
Tir
Sol
Nef
Lum
Tal
Ort

Spirit might be completely unnecessary for us. Then we only need 1 Amn rune to reach the pwnage.

My suggestions, up there. If you have better ones, bring 'em here so the world can see the fruits of your thoughts. Now I must leave, for a while. I'm in a hurry to reach a distant location where I can clear my head.

Well, I'm using Insight atm, so there's no room for a shield, and my res is max with aura. But, if anyone badly needs res and fcr I could switch the gear around.

23-09-2007, 23:34

This all makes sense to me. The only thing I wouldn't like is that dropping Stealth means I'll loose an FCR breakpoint (nice for teleporting) and my only source of FHR (dropping me from 11 frames to 15 - yikes). I guess that means I'm even more relegated to the back lines, but that probably makes sense anyways (btw, did any of you notice me going melee against a couple of the fire immunes we encountered this week :wink2:).

One other thought - I think Easy has a BA merc, should we drop that instead of Might? I have a level20 Enchant (191% AR) with BCommand active, and Lpr and Jaago seem to be doing ok with that when Easy hasn't been around (I can also boost Enchant 6 more levels with hard points, though I was thinking of synergizing Hydra). In case Easy isn't available to play a few more times, perhaps he and Jaago could switch (Easy takes Might, Jaago takes Prayer)... just a thought.

Regarding socketing res jewels, fyi, 2 of the jewels that dropped this weekend were Ambergris & Ruby (FireRes, not ED), nothing else was close to noteworthy. Looking through the stash, we currently have the following resistance jewels:

Magics:
Resist All: 1x Shimmering (8%)
Lightning: 4x Ambergris (30%, 26, 19, 18) | 2x Camphor (15, 7)
Fire: 4x Ruby (26, 23, 17, 17) | 2xGarnet (12, 7)
Poison: 2x Jade (23, 20) | 5x Beryl (14, 10, 9, 7, 5)
Cold: 0x Sapphire, 0x Lapis Lazuli :sad2:

Rares:
Death Scarab (+7 to Life | +9% Enhanced Damage | Cold Resist +9%)
Plague Scarab (+8 to Mana | +8 to Minimum Damage | Cold Resist +5%)

... and then if we can spare Rals, Orts, Thuls, and Tals we can get some res therre too.

I spent an hour shopping for a helm for Gulzar before I finally found one that I deemed sufficient (Coral (25) Crown of the Tiger (26)). Along the way I purchased a few decent items too - probably a couple we can use:

Artisan's Gothic Plate of the Squid (+80 to Life, Socketed (3: 0 used))
Artisan's Light Plate of the Whale (+92 to Life, Socketed (3: 0 used))
Artisan's Tower Shield (Socketed (3: 0 used))
Cobalt Gauntlets of Alacrity (Cold Resist +26%, 20% Increased Attack Speed)
Coral Plated Belt of the Squid (+80 to Life, Lightning Resist +30%)
Garnet Gauntlets of Alacrity (Fire Resist +28%, 20% Increased Attack Speed)
Garnet Plated Belt of the Colossus (+50 to Life, Fire Resist +25%)
Jeweler's Gothic Plate (Socketed (4: 0 used))

and I'm thinking of trying my luck with Larzuk on this - 2xPDiamond would be pretty sweet:

Chromatic Tower Shield of Deflecting (+20% Increased Chance of Blocking, All Resistances +21, 30% Faster Block Rate)

I did hear a funny sound of someone attacking with an orb. I guess every little bit helps... :wink2:

That is another option, but my 'sin has lousy AR. Somewhere around 2,5k when enchanted I think  My rogue mercs IS lowers enemy def, but I don't know how much it helps. I did release wrong type of charge-up more than few times in the last game. There is no problem when I can see the balls circling around my character, but when there is lots of effects and stuff at once, I can't see them and I have to rely on consistent cth. Which I don't have. But it is not the end of the world.

Well done :)

Those Garnet Gauntlets of Alacrity would be an upgrade for me. A new armor would definitely help too, I'll try shopping myself a bit before the next game. If I don't find anything worthy, I'll switch to one of those armors of yours. I'm not sure how to fill the holes though.

Add rals/orts/thuls if you have any kind of resistance problems, otherwise i'd go with Prubies. Pretty much every of my chars wears something along those lines .

We do have 3xArgent Jewels too (2 actually have perfect +100 AR) - but I suspect resistances and/or life might make more sense. I'll bring the gloves and the Artisan's Light Plate of the Whale for you this week, unless you really want the extra 26 defense from the Gothic Plate .

BTW, I was regretting the 110 points I spent in Dex already, but no more... I tried my luck - and my luck was good . Please bring 2xPDiamond this week, I'd like to upgrade my shield:

Chromatic Tower Shield of Deflecting
Defense: 23
Chance to Block: 64%
Durability: 60 of 60
Required Strength: 75
Required Level: 42
Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion
Item Level: 79

+20% Increased Chance of Blocking
All Resistances +21
30% Faster Block Rate

Some good drops this time. 2/2/50 Jade Talon, Tiamat's etc. We found Amn and Fal too. Honor is reality now, and our barb is unable to choose between Lionheart and Treachery. We are so spoiled...

I did some calculations and came to this conclusion:

If you guys don't mind me using all our runes, I can make both passion and lionheart. with those bloodfists, it would be just enough to get me to 5.5 fpa frenzy and I could still get the oh so awesome stat boni of lionheart.

Otherwise, I'll make that treachery. It would save us the Fal and 3 Ios.

Runes are made to be used. I don't mind if you make the RWs. You need the killspeed and safety boost the most (your hp dropped alarmingly few times yesterday).

I would wait until poops and darkoooo accept your plan though.

Few rough battles this time. The worst was in Arcane Sanctuary, multiple boss packs spawned next to each other with eeeeevil mods (fanaticism + cursed and other nice little things).

Firelizard's Talons dropped in palace, so our good claw ha...luck continues. My assassin doesn't have enough str and dex to use it yet though. What else...Plague Bearer, Ginther's Rift...can't remember more right now.

Add lots of lag and a weird d2 crash, there we have this weeks game summarized for most part

Since I lagged and dropped from last weeks epic in the AS, IMO, they were the toughest battle(s) yet. Period.

Hopefully, Darkoooo, you can take some consolation in the fact that as soon as you died there was a perpetual battle for healing pots... seriously, I would have gladly grabbed a minor-healing potion off of the floor a few times (I can just imagine how many our melee chars drank - I'm pretty sure my sorc quaffed ~40). Gulzar had a few deaths too, the costly bugger.

In other words, your char was missed immediately, and over time your humour will be missed even moreso. Thanks for the fun. :hanky:

Game & Meph down.

Actually we managed to survive and kill stuff easier than I expected. There was some tougher battles, usually they involved a cursed vampire boss and a buch of dolls. Throw in a nasty aura (like Might in our case) and you've got some real excitement right there. We found nothing worth mentioning, some ****ty rares etc. No green or gold from Meph. We'll see if we can clear act 4 in the next game. Wishing for good HF drops...

Poops: your death surprised me. Maybe because I wasn't paying attention to your hp bar, as I was having trouble with the poison myself (my Fade wore out in the middle of the battle and the spiders hit me ). O well, thanks for playing with us all. We lost a good bit of firepower when your sorc fell on the ground for the last time. Just don't kill yourself while skiing :hide:

PS. sending my e-mail addy in couple of minutes. If you want, I can send the items we looted from your sorc to you, as we didn't need them. Otherwise, we will sell them and...uh..gamble one circlet?

no need to send the items back, thanks. I don't play a lot of HC and I'm not sure I like to loot - seems kindof perverted to me . The good items were probably a couple of charms and the merc's Insight, so those are lost forever. Sell 'em and gamble a good item for me.

Hell act 4 completed. And I feel like writing more than usually.

The game started with a nice bosspack or 2 right below the stairs between Outer Steppes and Pandemonium Fortress. After fighting for few minutes we managed to kill them, and shortly after that, my game crashed. Unrecovable error blahblahsux. Damnit. This game hates assassins. My character has caused at least 3 d2 crashes and twice the whole system has jammed. Reset button ftw. The crash had one positive effect though: no more leapers.

Plains of Despair: no gloams, good. Ok, Jaago has Taunt to handle them easily, but I still prefer not to fight them. Flesh spawners were annoying, CoS slowed down their breeding, and Meteor from PS worked best versus them. Izual? Pathetic wussy, worth 2 skillpoints. Yay, more dmg.

River of Flame had more spawners, maggots and pit lords. In other words, lots of little eggs on the ground, and soon after that, even more little annoyances bugging us. At some point we found the forge and killed Hephasto who had Holy Freeze. That was an easy battle ---> Hammer time! Jaago smashed his soulstone and got a Ko rune as a reward. 10 minutes more fighting and my game decides to crash in a similar way. <insert expletive>. Nah, actually I think the crash saved us some time. I needed my forge too, so another expedition to flamy river was unavoidable. Too bad them monster roll was exactly the same. And this time Hephasto had Might aura and some ugly immunities. After luring him away from other nasties we killed him. My hellforge drop: Lum. Mmmmh...I don't know if there is anything useful we could do with these new runes...We'll see.

Chaos Sanctuary was slow going. OKs were really annoying to kill, especially when there was lots of 'em around yelling their curses at us (shameless scumbags!). Usually we lured as many other monsters away from them as we could, killed them, and then tried to kill the IM'ers. Stunning, cornering and manipulating them by resummoning my shadow strategically got the job done, albeit slowly. Jaago got IMed couple of times and hit the monsters, but either his damage is low enough (or hp is high enough) to survive such spanking. Good for us. Lord de Seis wasn't too bad, I spammed MB to make the knight minions slap each other around, while we poked de Seis in the eye with sharp objects. The minions got few hits in when the conversion timer ran out. That did hurt alot, but more MB spam kept us safe for another moment.

Diablo was definitely the easiest part of CS. Or the whole act. I went as close to him as I could to avoid his (sexy) pink lightning. Big D concentrated on meleeing my 'sin, bad strategy (lol nub). I only had to gulp some red every now and then. The horned (almost wrote horny, but you will never know that) guy fell and gave us 6 rares, which we sold.

Now, after consuming few hundred healing pots each (where are you, darkoooo?) during those 3+ hours, we are at Harrogath.

(Ok, you're right, I forgot to mention many tough and/or slow battles. I am the artist this time and I have my privileges. You know who to blame.)
