View Full Version : Worth aiming for high str to use spirit for Bliz sorc?
Like everyone else, I'm going with a pure Bliz sorc for the new ladder. Since I won't have access to a lot of +str equipment, do you think it is worth pumping str up in order to wear a spirit shield? That's a lot of Life that I'll be losing, but Spirit is just sick compared to most shields, especially considering how cheap it is. I'm not going for max block, if that matters.
It's worth IMO. You need around 60-70 str anyway so you lose only something like ~150 life. That's not much compared to 600+ life if you are going vit route.

I say its definately worth it, I made one untwinked blizzard sorc (except for the white monarch) on SP and I literally teleported through hell with it and an insight merc so that I could get to hell meph and farm for good equipment. Since I had loads of mana regen and 105% FCR I was relatively safe and it also allowed me to swap out magefists for frostburns. I had a couple of NDE's but I didn't die which is surprising since I had relatively poor resists...all negative IIRC!
Cool, that's what I wanted to hear!
Think I'll be going the same route then as well!
Couldn't you make Spirit in another shield with less strength requirement? Is this really bad?

Spirit requires 4 sockets, and the monarch is the shield that has both the ability to have four sockets and the least strength requirements of the shields that can have 4 sockets.

Monarchs are the lowest str shields that can get 4 sockets besides Paladin shields.
So no, you can't make in a lower str req shield.
what would be the best type of sorc for the reset?

I say go for the strength but use Ss damage reduce sorcs rule. try getting max block on a spirt.
With ladder reset it would be spirit vs rhyme rather than ss vs spirit. I would choose spirit any day

Correct me if I am wrong, but as a sorc, isnt the block% only 42% for a monarch? If thats true, and the following formula is correct:
Total Blocking = (Blocking * (Dexterity - 15)) / (Character Level * 2)
Then wouldnt you need like 350 dex to get max block with a spirit monarch at level 99? Isnt that ... insane? Like I said, correct me if I am wrong because I really am a noob. Ive just been trying to do all this math by following links and looking stuff like this up.

That's why people don't use max block with a spirit
You are correct. My point is that after reset it's better to go vit and spirit than dex and rhyme. Stormshield could be better option but it's unavailable at the moment IMO.

Actually i think it does not really matter which route you go. The cheap blocking shields like "Whistan's" can be easily farmed from Mephisto in Normal/NM. You can get the best blocking shields later. Same with vitality route. Getting Spirit will take some time. Monarch Shields that can get 4 sockets through socket quest can only drop in Hell Cow games.
Monarch shields can drop in most parts of Hell, and the only dropped Monarchs that can't get 4 sockets are low-quality ones.
Having said that, getting a 4 socket Monarch still takes some time.

Personally I would only go for 156 str if I had the Monarch already. Like people said, Withstan's or Viscerataunt are much more easier to find...

This is good advice, what I did was just save around 70ish stat points once I had got about 80ish in strength. This then gave me enough spare stat points so that I could dump them into strength to wear my spirit when I found a monarch. In the mean time, I used a mosers with 2 perfect diamonds along with tals belt and dual ravenfrosts for the boost to dexterity which gave me an additional 58 (slightly less as one raven had +18 dexterity) to dexterity and 63 to resists which gave me decent blocking without spending any points into dexterity.
Obviously this may not be the case for you, as you may not find these items from nm Meph. But saving stat points is quite a good idea in general.
