Now, everyone knows that the appropriate use of the emoticon :closed: (:closed:) is to denigrate other people and dismiss their arguments without even reading them. The utility is somewhat the same as the race horses' eyepads; it prevents useless glancing at peers and enhances one's dedication.

Lately, it has come to my awareness that the distinguished mods of our Forums, especially the recent addition, LorveN, have been using the said emoticon for it's alleged "real" purpose, i.e. inserting it after actually closing a topic, implicating the outrageous claim that only a mod can close a discussion and that the said emoticon should not be used as "nyah nyah I'm not listening" -smiley.

This is blasphemy!

This is madness!

How does it show up on your computer?
On mine it shows the smily diligently reading the page carefully from top to bottom.
Making apppropriate facial expressions along the way to further show that the message was carefully read and analysed.
Now I know why you were argueing so vehemenantly with Dondrei when he was trying to desparately to agree with you.

Consider this trolly statement: "I've read all your statements. They're not worthy of addressing. My word is the final one. This topic is closed."

That's how I've seen it used here most of the time. I am struck and amused by the fact that within a week I actually seen it used twice like I think it should be instead of the use that has been. I'm not criticising the outlook of the emoticon - I would surely love if people using the emoticon here acted on those looks. That, however, has rarely been the case.

As to Dondrei, he had the same points of departure (occasional disagreement on translations) and came to a different conclusion (expression of inability to recover nuances contra expression of highlighted awareness of the nuances). I don't think that's quite desperate agreeing yet.

Interesting, for those of us who lacks a degree in Advanced Smiley Analysis (ASA).

What is the correct usage of following smilies?

#1: :cloud9:
#2: :soapbox:
#3: :tache:
#4: :french:

#1: You're such an idiot it's blissful.
#2: You're such an idiot I have to testify.
#3: You're such an idiot I bet this is how you look.
#4: You're an idiot. In addition, your woman doesn't shave, you never work and you can't stand up to your God-given rights.

Any exception from these directives, especially an attempt to make a comment more light-hearted, or, goodness gracious, less abrasive, will be dealt swiftly by the Commission of Offensive Methodology for Emoticons.

But hey, who said I am actually reading the threads I close? :unimpressed:
No, but seriously, it feels a bit strange to close a post with a .
I am, however, open for suggestions, maybe :smug: would do the trick?

As for :french:, I prefer using it when stating the obvious.

Touché.

I've, on occasion, thought that I might be undermining any posts I make by looking that smug.

Then I realised I'd give the impression on the text alone, so it doesn't really matter.

While we're at it, this needs an emoticon.

Smilies are for milquetoasts. Real men get their meaning across in plain text.

True. But if real men are to communicate with the commons, aren't they bound to use their language?

I always write :thumbsup : or some other "emoticon" code i might remember, instead of clicking on the appropriate image to the right. Does that count?

Uh, are there still people actually clicking the emoticons? Those are easy to learn.
Oh, and you have put a space right after the p. :french:

Its a good thing the original rolling eye smilie(blue one) is gone, some people would go into fits when you used them.

Personal opinion: the :closed: smiley is generally used as I think it was intended to be ~ to close a thread, signifying the end of the topic. Nothing more, and nothing less. It doesn't seem to imply that the thread wasn't read before being closed, I suppose that point of view would vary by person.

Gotcha so not only were they not reading the posts but also not watching the smiley completely.

And in a thousand years translaters will find nuances to say that he was agreeing with you.
