Upgrading socketed items

Hi guys, is it possible to upgrade an item that is socketed but not magical? For instance, if you had a 6-socketed halberd, could you use a horadric cube formula to upgrade it to exceptional (and then elite eventually)? How about if you inserted a rune word? Could you upgrade it then?

Also, does anyone have any experience with BOTD rune word for your merc? Will it work?

u can't up white / grey items.
Only things u can up are rare, magical, and unique.

BoTd for a merc isn't as great depending on ur build. a lot of other ppl will prefer infinity for sorcs, pride for zealers and skellymancers, etc.

according to the arreat summit you canot upgrade white/grey items, only uniques and rares (couldnt find anything about magical items so i guess they cant be uped either). if im allowed to post a link to it i will gladly do it, if not i will just pm it to you.

I have actually never tried to up a runeword. The runewords do appear as golden as the uniques. I just might give it a try. But I think somebody will give me the answer beforehand :)

well, about uping runewords sounds interesting. i think i got a runeword somewhere that i could try to up. i will check later today and post back how it went:wink3:

Runewords can't be upped. They count as socketed items, not uniques. It would be very easy to up socketed items otherwise.
(find normal/exceptional socketed item, make cheap runeword, up it, use hel + tp scroll)

and i dont think runewords can be up'd bcuz they were grays b4 they were gray/uniques.
its easier and less expensive 2 try it on open b.net too that's where i try all the stuff i find out and stuff i want 2 try out 2 c if it works lol

thanks for the reply. now i dont have to mule those runes for uping an item and all that. seems you where right Crowd Control. didnt take long to get and answer;)
