The other night, while doing a Baal run, a tp was created near the throne. We all entered and were overwhelmed by mobs. Most managed to survive, but I dropped.

Upon returning, I noticed someone had looted 100,000 gold from my body.

Now the death was not caused by PK, just a mob.

There's always going to be the jerk punk kid who takes advantage and steals from others, but this seemed to be a bit low.

I can understand another being able to take your gold if you die by their hands, but to take their gold when you die by a mob....just seems low.

Is there absolutely no way you can put some kind of a lock on gold looting when caused by a non-pk incident?

I take it you're SOL when you die, even when they are in your party and just don't die....

when u die, a portion of ur gold will drop as u already noticed.

There is no way u can put a lock on gold looting unless u plan to mule ur gold to another high lvl char who can hold it after every game. Its just part of the game.
Thats why there are ppl here who love to kill bots for their gold and just for the heck of it.
Same with pvp, if someone kills u and u drop a fair amount of gold, they will take it. Thats why i never carry more then 100 gold on my mfíng or hell running and pvp chars.

As a general rule, I don't pick up others gold when they die (unless it is unfriendly PvP). Honestly, it's not worth it to take it from them when it's only a couple of armor sales and I don't like it when people take mine. However, if you think about it, everyone is going to split your gold anyway when you pick it up again so you don't only lose it when you die, you lose a good portion of your pile when you get it back. Regardless, it makes the one who died feel a little better and so I leave it there.

My problem is that I don't know where it went to.

I had 100,000 gold. When I died I had zero in my inventory. I realize there is a portion, up to 20% that is removed automatically.

So that would leave 80,000 gold. I went back to my corpse, there was no 80,000 gold. When I've died in the past, it's always been there.

I had taken for granted that people would not be able to take my gold unless we were both hostile or they PKed me like in the past.

I never got the portion of gold back when someone picks it up as you said. I had zero gold from 80K.

I looked all over that area, I held down Alt to have everything get highlighted. Nothing.

I guess someone not in team took the cash then, else you should have gotten a portion of it.

when your in a party and if you pick up your pile of gold its still divided amongst all of the near by party members anyway

I added emphasis there. You were probably still in town when your gold got snagged.

EDIT: Since we are getting into a decent amount of detail here, I'll elaborate even more.

From AS (http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/basics/) :
"When a member of a party picks up gold, it is divided evenly among all the party members. Any remaining gold goes to the player who picked up the pile. Gold is only split with party members who are in the same map area, or "zone," as shown on the Automap or in the party menu. Gold Splitting cannot be turned off.

If you are killed, your character will lose a percentage of the total gold both carried and stored in the Stash. This percentage is equal to your character's level but will not exceed 20%. After this 'death penalty' is deducted, the remaining gold your character was carrying falls to the ground in a pile. If the penalty exceeds the amount of gold you were carrying, the remainder of the penalty is deducted from your Stash.

In Single-Player, dying will not deplete your entire gold supply. No gold is lost from your Stash, and 500 gold per character level is exempt from the death penalty. For example, if a 10th level Single-Player character with 5,000 gold dies, he will lose no gold. "

However, "gold-splitting cannot be turned off" isn't completely true. You could just unparty, grab your gold, and re-party if you were really concerned about it.

if your not in the area at the time they pick up the gold though you wont get any of it. you have to be in the same room when someone on your team picks up gold for you to get a portion of it

It's gold. Every other monster drops the stuff. Let it go. 100k is like... not even an mf runs worth. If its that big a deal, try harder to avoid dieing.

its not much i can add here except for a story from the times i have been dueling or whatnot and people steal my gold. you think its low for someone to steal your gold when its a mob that killed and, and it was only 100k. well i was in a duel game full of GM duellers (i know that happens like once in a blue moon), and this gues enter, nk me and steal the 1k or so gold that droped before he s/e. after the shock of what he did sunk in i was laughing so hard i couldnt even play for like a minute or so. he stole 1k gold from duels before he left thats the amount of gold you get from killing some randome mob in hell:P

I see it similarly but with a different outlook. It's only gold, why would you take someone else's? I have to admit that I get a little glimmer of hope when I come back to my body to see my full rejuvs and gold still sitting there; I simply feel better about the whole situation. That being said, when someone takes it I don't freak out or anything because, after all, it's only gold. You really can't expect much out of random people on the internet. As for me, I choose to let people keep as much of their gold as they can salvage. Now PvP (no one should pvp with gold anyway unless it's just a friendly game) and dead bots are a whole different story.

I am sure I am considered a baby because I am not on nightmare or hell mode like many others are.

On a higher difficulty, I can understand the gold drops in higher quantities.

But for me on normal mode, 100K took me a good long run.

And as far as avoid dying. I've only died twice, this being the second time. There was no way we could see it coming. The idiot who set up the TP put it right in the middle of a ton of mobs that he aggroed

But I guess there's no more point in questioning it since I can't do anything about people stealing my gold.

Great to know.

if your playing without geting rushed or anything i dont see the problem. whenever i play through the game without rush i always end up with full stash and inven, and i end up gambling just to get with me the extra gold left after selling loot. if this is any help, pick up class specific items, and armors with 100+def and if its rare/magical then so much better. as for class specific, some helms can get you good gold, dont try paladins shields as they usually dont get me much gold. the best is to pick up staves, wands, orbs. you can get 35k per item without much problems. hope this help you solve the money problems;)
