Never tried a pally. I read the manual today and it seemed very interesting but I would like to know from real people what they consider the pros and cons of the pally.

That entirely depends on the build... Read some of the guides in the sticky threads to get an idea about what they can do... First time pally players should try a Zealot in my opinion...

Oh yeah, zealots are lotsa fun. The constant thwacking as you overpower a mob surrounding you, tanking all the damage...
The best part is the auras, definitely. Using them with anyone else in a party will simply mow down enemies. They also have fairly good combat skills, insane dmg w/ Vengeance, and crowd control and dmg with zeal.
The cons are their dependence on items (IMO, don't know if that's a problem for you or not), and a weak start. I always had to co-op with someone else for a long time before being able to do stuff on my own.
Once you do get items and you are able to survive long enough in hell on your own, then the rest is easy street.

Zealots are like bowazons, everyone's second favourite build. I absolutely adore my bowazon too.
If you have capital, consider an auradin or a dreamer. You can kill anything in pvm, and survive iron maiden.

yes any melee pally's worst enemy is the Chaos sanctuary... other than that there is no con at all... so long as you can afford the gear... theres only things to gain from making a pally..
for first time i suggest zealer, then try a hammerdin, they are quite fun actually once you get the aiming hammers part down
Welcome to the forums!
The two most common types of Paladin are the Zealots (with physical, cold and lightning variants) and Hammerdins.
Zealots are melee characters. The two elemental variants (Frost Zealot and Tesladin in the guides) are the most suitable for starting out, as they do exceptionally well without any specific equipment requirements. The physical damage variant would be stronger if you have above-average equipment however.
Hammerdins cast magic hammers in a spiral pattern around them. They can be exceptionally powerful if they spam hammers into the middle of a crowd, are well known for being able to deal with any monster in the game (bar one very rare encountered one). They require a LOT of mana and a fair amount of equipment to be effective, so I find they are generally not fun until very high levels.
Most of the other builds are hybrids, designed for duelling or are based around specific items.
I hope your introduction to Paladins is an enjoyable one!
There are several pros and less cons on the paladins than other characters, i believe. I am under the impression that the game designers liked and wanted the paladins to dominate the game, hands down. Paladins have numerous advantages and weapons in their arsenal that no other character has (which is why my dreamer is named Weapon_ofChoice).
Pros:
Charge-fast ground coverage. Its like a fast smite with knockback that depends on attact rating. also has desynch which makes you invisible more or less.
Vigor- aura for faster ground coverage
Zeal-werewolf's fury but better due to the inability to be interrupted
Fanatacism-aura that grants faster attack, more damage, and more attach rating. very party friendly.
Meditation-grants massive mana regen bonus to party and yourself.
Sanctuary- aura that grants massive resist all
blesed hammer- attack with ability to get massive unresistable damage
smite-melee range skill that always hits
Holy Shield-works like mana shield in usage but instead of reducing damage, it increases your defense by a sicknasty number allowing paladins to get over 50k defense without too much trouble.
Their items grant massive bonuses to the important things. HoZ, the paladin shield grants 2 all pally skills, 2 combat skill tree, and massive 50 all resist. socket the shield with an um and you have 72 resist all in one item. With holy shield, the massive resistances available, and skills such as zeal (for leech and crowd control), the paladins are very comfortable in the front lines and as a support character to any party due to their auras and ablities.
Cons:
Many of their builds are equipment intensive and requiresome wealth
Some builds have a slow start (hammerdins cant use hammers til lvl 18)
Dont have many long-range weapons besides Fist of Heavens and a bow with the right aura
I have a hard time finding faults with paladins, but that might be due to the fact that I think they are the best class in the game. All in all, paladins have the capability to be excellent tanks, deal massive damage, and benefit a party greatly with their auras. Everyone should make a paladin just to have the fun of it. If made correctly, you may never stop playing that character
pros: most versatile class in game
cons: most expensive class in game

QFT. Although, saying that, you can make a moderately effective Zealot (Zeal + Fanaticism) or Avenger (Vengeance + Conviction) untwinked. The only thing I've ever had to trade for was a Baranar's Star for my Zealot a few levels back. That will now make its way to the next Paladin I build, an Avenger.

and it took me over 200 words to say the same thing...
