Lightning Sorc viable?

I was just wondering if a lightning sorc is viable in classic,
no energy shield because the damage from lightning becomes too low
im only want to go pure lightning no CL/Orb
I also was wondering about a build,
20 Nova
20 Thunderstorm
20 Lightning Mastery
???

Nova costs 14 + skill level mana, so 34mana at level 20. So it really depends on your gear as well. Are you gonna drink? Or get real high manaregen? Warmth? And I think you'd want a staff with +2sorc +3thunderstorm +3 frozen armor or +3 shiver armor.. Depending what you like best. But I think you definately need something that provides cold...

Frozen Armor gives a defense bonus and freezes any melee attacker that hits you. Though the freeze length is cut 3/4 on Hell mode so it will be even less than a second, no matter the skill level. The defense bonus will be 25% + (5*skill level) Shiver Armor gives a defense bonus, plus any melee attacker that hits you takes damage and is slowed. The defense bonus will be 39% + (6*skill level). The Cold Length: 4 seconds; so on Hell 1second. Shiver Armor duration is 12 seconds longer than Frozen Armor. At level 5 Shiver Armor has a 178 seconds duration, so say... 3minutes. Switching your shield/weapon to staff every new game and 3min would kinda suck though...
I think you need the defense bonus as well as the cold for the extra crowd control, since you want pure lightning. The duration TS will be pretty much equal to your shiver armor in this situation, so you need to recast both about every 3-4minutes!

What will your gear look like? Static maybe could use a few more points? So it would equal the radius of nova? High defense, high fcr, high block, high fhr? You'd need REAL GOOD gear!

No, it isn't. I tried it, it worked as a normal-nightmare rush sorc at high level, but was useless in hell. A friend tried it using all the best of my NL gear a while ago, got it to 91, and it didn't work.

Bottom line is, lightning is overrated on classic. I hear about these alleged "godly" light sorcs who were great SvS, but every one of them who I duel is terrible and just tries to namelock or AA and fails.

Yes, that is what is implied when someone tells you that something doesn't work.

to determine whether something is viable, one needs to determine a purpose for the char type.

if your idea of "viable" is to just teleport in cs games, flip seals, and leach xp to get to a high level for gambling, then yes, it's viable. in fact, you could, in theory not bother with any attack.

that's essentially what both of my enchanters are. Whilst making/leveling them, I didn't even bother with a "traditional attack". I merely leveled them via nm cows until lvl 40. from there, I tossed a shard, twitch, magefist rezzy gloves/boots and rezzy ring rings on, and assumed teleport duty (drank blue pots like a fiend) for cs runs - in fact, during this period I think I used nozokan for the extra FR, and fhr... Got her to a final level of 67, and started applying skills and the rest of stats in order to wear silks, and the rest of the +skill gear

i meant more for soloing non lightning immunes in hell, like the blizz sorc and fire sorc can do the monsters that are not cold/fire immune

then, as stated - not viable. and chanters in a cs can be annoying.

everyonce in a while, my BO baba will WW through a mob of monsters in order to get through them whilst wearing bo stick (leap lock game mostly) if I were chanted, that damage returned from chant via IM would be horrific if it was a maxed chanter.

for soloing, I'm afriad that a blizzer is your best option. in my experience, better than 1/2 the time you can kill infector, and all of his minions, as well as vizier. that being said, I do not actually know the actual odds of fector spawning with cold immunity.

roughly a year ago, I died due to IM whilst wearing bo sticks after being chanted...

my normal WW dmg is significantly lower, w/out chant, and with nearly 3k life I can more typically WW several times through a giant hoard even when IM'ed. (this was on my str baba, and he wasn't wearing any crushing blow, and was significantly lower level at the time)

if it wasn't the fire damage returned that killed me, I don't know what else would/could have, cause it was the stereotypical WW until end of WW IM Death

Currently i have a lvl 75 light sorc. To tell u the truth, her dmg is pretty good but the fact that it ranges from like 3-5000 she isnt the best killer on hell cs. When i first made her i didnt see any light sorc but lately after i stopped mine, a few have been popping up. I suggest you decide on another sorc due to the fact that this one is only good in nm and norm like Zodijackyl stated.

In duels, its the same as when fighting monsters. Youll get lucky once in a while and 1 hit some people but most of the time youll be doing pretty low dmg.
