I've noticed that some runeword items and uniques only show up during Ladder games.... but after the ladder season is over, your character is converted into a Non-ladder character.
My question is, for those items you picked up or recieved that were ladder specific, are they removed from your inventory/game when your character gets switched over?
I'm trying to understand the benefits of starting a ladder character, as it is HIGHLY upsetting to me that blizzard has to make the realms more difficult than it needs to be by making sure only certain items are allowed by certain members.....absolutely apalling.

Everything gets transfered over to non ladder when the season ends. That includes ladder only items like spirit and grief.

Excellent, thanks for the info.
Now, a sub-question: Am I then able to trade those ladder items as a non-ladder character to other non-ladder characters?
you should be able to.
everything as we know it to be will be non ladder eventually.

Excellent.... so really there is no reason to NOT start a ladder char during character creation.... there's just a timeframe for how long you have to acquire these special items before you're kicked out till next ladder season.
Thank you for answering those questions.

Also you might want to think of not only what items are on or off ladder, but also who's on and off ladder. I think most of the wolfpack on west are on ladder. Give the Druids' Registry link in the signature a click to get a better sense of who plays ladder and non-ladder on west; the friends and community you'll make and meet can make a big difference too.

That's a good point... unfortunately I've already made most of my chars non-ladder :( I didn't have a desire to 'compete' with everyone on D2.... but this was before I found this website, and before I understood how ladder worked, and before I knew that certain runewords are ladder only and that they would convert over later.
