The statistics for Diablo II are really beyond me. I know where in general to obtain rare items, but I'm wondering if there is a specific area with a specific monster that will give me the best chances of getting pieces of the set, "Natalya's Odium".
Can anyone help me with this? Thanks!

If you only want to run bosses, the weapon is the easiest gotten from Pindleskin (still not really good odds though, but Pindle runs are fast) and the other items from Meph.

Something tells me I'm doing something wrong.

So, with magic finding at 9999 (impossible), even if I kill Baal in Hell Difficulty, there's a one in eight thousand, ninety-eight chances that he'll drop a Natalya's Mark? Either this is wrong, or I'm giving up on that set.

It's probably right. Though, why run Baal for it? If you check the statistics, Abominables found in Ancient's Way have almost half the chance Baal has. How many of those can you kill in the same time you can make a baalrun? Many!
It is often better to kill many monsters when hunting such items.
Also, think about it. You probably have made a couple of thousand baalruns in your life. (Assuming you have been playing for a while)
How many times have you seen Nat's Mark drop from Baal? I have never seen it as far as I remember, and I've been playing on and off over the last 5 years or so... Oh well. Odds are always low.
My point is you will be better off running for example Ancients Way and kill lots of monsters with (slightly) lower chance.
Oh, and a sidenote!
Be aware of the diminishing returns of mf when it comes to set-find etc. Your actual set-find is only 476% with 9999%mf. Try set the mf to something around 500% (more likely), and see what happens. Chance will not be 20 times less. ;)
Abominables found in Ancient's Way have almost half the chance Baal has. How many of those can you kill in the same time you can make a baalrun? Many!
Note that they have to be random bosses, though. Else the chance is a LOT lower.
My advice: Run pindle until eyes and fingers bleed.

Pindle, Ancient Tunnels or The Pit. All these places have decent probabilities of dropping Natalyas Mark, and you might find a lot off other good stuff on the way too. :wink3:

Welcome to the world of MF.

My advice: Run pindle until eyes and fingers bleed. It was my understanding that ATMA gives the chance for a regular monster to drop a specific item, not a random boss monster. I'm not sure what you're getting at here.
ATMA can give the chance for regular *and* random boss monsters. In the above screenshot the chance is shown for a boss Abominable. The chance for a regular Abominable in the Ancients Way with 9999% MFand a 8 player party to drop Nat's Mark is 1:2345683, AKA not really good.

Or just the fact that ATMA has listed all the monsters as gold in that screenshot. Normal monsters have black color font, while champions have purple.

Far from it... you're one of the brightest guys around here... but anyone can miss a detail or two from time to time.
OP: Bottom line is, many kills with a moderate MF % is often better than few kills at a high MF %.
To really find out where is best to find an item, time your MF runs, count how many of each monster you kill on the way, calculate the odds that one of them will drop it (not just Baal, Pindle, etc...) and see who has the best chance per hour invested.
I had that realization when i was calculating how long it would take to find / cube up a Ber, Hell Pindle = Hell Countess roughly in time required, she drops more runes, he can drop higher... but her minions can drop higher than she can... yet they each have a pack of minions who can drop items... err... to get back from my tangent...
Roughly speaking (minion odds of dropping * number of minions + Target odds of dropping = true odds of getting it) / time per run = chance per hour
This is why Pindle is so popular, even though he may not drop anything a dozen times in a row, each run is under a minute, so your chance per hour is reasonably high.

Are you sure? Pindleskin has less chance to drop a Ral rune than the countess has to drop an Ist. Since it takes more than 10 million Rals to cube an Ist, I don't feel Pindleskin is a particulary good rune hunting target.

He might be a little off, but not that much I believe. Pindle will probably drop a Ber before you can cube a Ber from Countess, since running him is faster. But if you kill monsters around the Countess, especially Ghosts, Countess runs beats Pindle runs by far for runes.
A Ber is 64 Ists.
Pindleskin has a 1:972208 chance of dropping a Ber and a 1:181764 chance of dropping an Ist. Countess has a 1:1109 chance of dropping an Ist.
If we only count the amount of runs it is quite likely that you can cube a Ber from Ists found from the countess than Pindleskin drop to drop one Ist.
If we consider time as well the only reasonable (and I use that term losely) chance of getting a Ber from Pindleskin is to have him actually drop one (no cubing). Which means that your countess runs need to be 13-14 times slower (so close to 7 minutes in length, a non-teleporting char would probably do it faster than that), if you'd ignore the Mal's and Um's dropping from her, for Pindleskin to be a better target.
I haven't considered minions in this, but I don't think they will make up for it.
LK ftw
That too ofcourse.
