Either you have to be a fast grabber and snatch one as it drops in baalruns or similar, or you can always pick up every flawless gem you find, cube them to perfect gems, and trade for a decent weapon.
Flawless gems drop quite a lot in cowruns, for example.

you could begin by magic finding and then trading what you find to get better items.

what are you aiming for?

Ribcracker!

Cheap, crazily effective, makes cool sounds, an awesome colour... all good things.

Aim for a Grief PB (very fast, big damage and allows you to equip a shield for max block). There are occasions where a polearm will be advantageous however, for general purpose, I'd recommend Grief.
Grief can be obtained by making your own runeword with Mal and Lo or by trading for a lower Grief via the tradeboards. I've heard of low Griefs being traded for pgems before. Remember that even the lowest grief is still an awesome weapon.
