View Full Version : Freezing Arrow and Critical Strike?

I always thought that critical strike never multiplied elemental damage, but on the arreat summit site it said that freezing arrow works with critical strike...
Are they only talking about the physical damage of the original arrow, or are they referring to the +cold damage added?
And I don't remember where I got this (mebe I made it up lol) but +cold damage from gear or holy freeze aura gets added to the splash of freezing arrow?
Oh and another question, if someone blocks freezing arrow, does the splash damage still hit? Actually extending off of that, if someone minion stacks so after their teleport all of the minions stack on top of the player, how does pierce work with this. Will I pierce multiple times so that the freezing arrow goes off more than once? Or will 1 pierce just pass the entire pack?
why didn't no one answered this thread? we are here to help each other, right?
no i don't think that CS doubles cold damage... ther is a thread in this forum about Lightning Bolt and CS...and i don't think CS doubles that either...
yes cold damage from gear, HF aura adds to your FA damage. charms adds to your FA damage *and* duration (SC 1sec, don't know for sure about other charms)
splash damage always hits regardless of you AR...
how did that last question crossed your mind!?? LOL

Only the Physical portion is multiplied. Yes it works with the FA skill, just as it works with Lightning Javelins. If the javelin or arrow hits, and the game rolls a critical strike hit, then the physical damage is doubled and then added to the elemental damage roll.

The splash damage can still effect something even if the arrow misses. I've done it MANY times. Pierce is where the skill really takes off into the land of the truly Butt-kicking. When you pierce with a skill like Immo, FA, Lightning Fury, Plague Javelin, etc. . .then the effect can be repeated with each pierce. This means if you lob a FA into a crowd while wearing a Razortail belt and you have say 7 points in pierce. . .there is a very good chance that you could turn the whole crowd into ice cubes in short order. This is why Frostmaidens, LF Javazons, and Plague Javers RULE cows so hard. One or two attacks is all it usually takes to immobilize and destroy most large crowds.

I've never noticed plague javelin recasting when it pierces, are you sure about that one?

I am absloutely positively 100% sure.
I think I tried this after another thread about this same subject once. Man I wish I knew how to post screen shots. . .I have this one beauty where I'm in the Ice Caves and WELL over 2/3 the screen is a HUGE green cloud. That was about 2 or three Plague clouds triggering at once (at about 21k damage over 16 sec. . Having over 90% Pierce helps alot. . .
It does pierce and will trigger another (and another) plague cloud (or will continue the poison trail- which ever you are using). This also works with FA, CA, IA, and EA, and LF as well.

hoorah thanks for all the infro guys, really appreciate it.
However WrongdayJ, I was not referring to the piercing multiple crowds aspect of FA. I was looking at the issue of Minion Stacking as it happens in PvP.
Does anybody know how pierce works for this, say when a necro has skellies/golem/revives on top of him? If I pierce the 1st monster does it then have a % to pierce through the others, and each succesful pierce sending another hit of splash damage? Or does it treat the stack as only one monster and one pierce will send the arrow through to the other side only setting off 1 splash?

In Pvp- the same thing will happen.
You will blow right through the 1st minion and the Javelin will continue through and hit whatever is behind it. If there is another minion, then they will get it, too. If the pierce happens again, well, you know the rest.
If you pierce a minion, and the next target is a player. . .then there is a good chance that the Javelin will stop with him (or her). Usually most duelers are packing shields and a butt load of dex (for max block). Plan on your Jav stopping right there.
But minions are pierce-bait as long as your pierce is fairly high. . .like 90+%. Get a Razortail Belt and put about 6-8 points in pierce. Happy Hunting!!

Haha hopefully it'll work out. But refer to what you just said, pierce will hit whatever is behind it. When people teleport enough it bugs out and all of the minions occupy the SAME spot. They are all technically stacking on top of each other, what I wanted to know is if this counts as them being behind them....

Well, let me think about this for a second. . .
Even if they were all on top of each other. . .they'd all be poisoned instantly regardless. That would be a ton of dead minions in seconds. Then pierce doesn't matter anyway. Unless of course you are aiming to poison the minions and the players in one shot.
But with over 90% pierce, you will go through several of them at least before the Jav stops. . .the rest will eat the cloud.
I've never had this be a problem before. In fact. . .I love dueling summon nercros. . .the minions go down almost as fast as the necro himself.
