View Full Version : A Stupid Question

Really.

I sometimes wonder what questions my mind comes up with, but here we go.

I was running around in act V today - single play, sorceress - and there's always these funny looking barbarians walking around too.
They show up at the most unexpected places and luckily not always behind you.

Sometimes they get unlucky and die, which isn't very nice.
Sometimes I spend some time running along with one, and then they usually don't die, but just get lost.

What I'm wondering about is: is there any reward or anything to gain for helping them out?
Asking that, I haven't got a clue how it could be rewarded, for that matter....

They are just NPCs that are suppossed to add to the "flavor" of actV since they are defending the city. There is a quest to save some barbs that are in cages, but the ones just walking around don't contribute to anything.

Yeah, they're pretty much just there for decoration (and maybe tanks, if you really want to stay with them). From what I've heard, there was supposed to be something similar, with random Rogues walking around and shooting at stuff in Act 1, but that was taken out for some reason. You can still see one on occasion due to a glitch, but it's pretty rare.

The only reward you get for helping barbarians in Act 5 is when you release 15 of them from those prisons in one of the quests (you get Ral, Ort, and Tal runes, and the ability to hire barbarian mercenaries).

they do help a little if you follow them around, but they get stuck easily and walk tward the next area (sort of)

If you're bored you can try and get a few of them together. Five is my record.

As a pack they work as excellent tanks or alternate targets for the monsters. Either way, it doesn't hurt to herd them together and follow them until they get stuck. Just makes you're life a bit easier.

5 is my record as well.

Yeah, that's what I managed to do too, I decided I wanted to know if they're really that daft to follow me.
They did.
Then I wondered if they're as daft as my merc, who tends to get stuck all the time. They are even worse.

So the only bonus is having a bunch of overmuscled men racing after your skirt. Interesting.

Never seen a rogue one around except Flavie. I suppose it's one of 'm battlenet things again.

hehe, *imagines 5 muscle guys chasing Vivi, who is wearing a sailor moon type outfit:shocked: *

The mindless barbs in normal can help kill monsters, but in higher difficulties, they just die in a few hits...

I remember someone suggested a contest to see how far you can take those tail-like beasts (the things dark wanderer turns into) in Act3. Potentially you can take them all the way to Travincal.
I guess you can do the same here if you're really bored and try to take some barb all the way to Crystalline Passage entrance. Although it might be easier in this case because you won't kill the barbs by accident.

I've tried that, the barbarians seem to be coded to not leave the area they spawned in and instead get stuck somewhere at the end every time. I can't say exactly how many times I've tried to get them over the bridges at the end of the first area, but not once has a barbarian followed me that wasn't my merc.

Hoarding barbarians? If you want to do something more fun, try chasing all the chickens to the Flavie or something, lol. =P

I once crushed all the worms after I killed Duriel; almost thought about starting a rumor that if you can crush all of them within 3 minutes, you'll get something good from Tyrael in the next room:smiley:.

Something good, from that fellow? I never trusted him.

I did but there are some randy hens constantly rubbing themselves up against Charsi's legs.

On topic of that, I accidently froze down a parrot yesterday. I was walking around in the Great Marsh where you have these bright green parrots flying about. My intention to kill those bloody flayer midgets as fast as possible using my Frozen Orb - which usually does the job pretty fast - resulted in a dead parrot.

A good thing about those barbs is that they appear to benefit friendly aura effects and BO if you apply them...

Means that those NPC barbarain get the bonus from any aura you may have, such as Defiance or Might.

Just a note about your thread title  :

"There's no stupid questions, just stupid answers"

EDIT : Oh, I'm aiming at nobody here of course. Just had to quote this movie because :
1/ It's a wonderful movie.
2/ There's no problem for asking basic questions here, it's precisely the purpose of this forum .

Hey, I just thought of something! (yeah, I know, it's a miracle)
What happens if those mindless barbs walk toward a bonewall?
Can you force those barbs to walk towards shenk's directions with bonewalls?

I have given the Barbs Battle Orders before and they appeared to have lasted longer, Mursilis explained the rest...

I'd have to assume yes, bonewalls would be one way to herd the NPC barbarians to Shenk. Not something I've tried but it should work (will take a while though).

Hmm... with that strategy, I wonder if there's a limit to where they can go. Besides through doors, of course.

Well I'm a sorceress, so I have no auras nor anything that has a bone. They still don't run away from me.

heh, anything with a bone....anyways, aren't bonewall charges possible or is it just bone prison?

You're asking a sorceress? I do single play, I never run into bonewalls.

I can't remember if there are items with bonewalls; maybe like rings or ammies your sorc can wear and use charges...

So that my already silly merc and a load of silly barbarians can get stuck behind it?

you can kind of make bone walls in diagonal shapes temporarily (bonewalls die after a few seconds, but you knew that) Using bonewalls, you could maybe funnel the barbs...

Funneling barbs is more something for Charsi...

a long time ago i saw a live rogue in the pit. i have never seen one since and i've lost the screenie i took. i never knew until now that it wasnt just some random glitch.
