Like the title said, what are some good starting characters that can do fairly well untwinked (ie starting with nothing).
This would be a stupid and very normal question, without this add;
I prefer if it was not a sorceress or a summon necromancer.
I just want a fairly ok character that can play most or at least many places of the game, without massive gear or being a summoner or sorc :P

all classes can do this if you build it skill dependant (or not item dependant) but "max defiance and max holy shield zealots" or "fanatic zealots" are the answers for me :)

Hammerdin. They're the strongest class in the game and I don't think anyone could debate that. A pair of spirits aren't hard to get once you hit nightmare and once you get them you're pretty well set.

Hdin by far. Virtually no problems with immunes. You can load them with MF if the need be.

Yep, when you take away sorcs and summon necs, youre left with a hammerdin.

As for other options, trapsins and javazons do well untwinked. The assassin simply lays her traps and runs around. The javazon can clear hell cows with a cracked javlin.

In fact, I wouldn't rank the hammerdin as a far and away favorite after sorcs/necros, since he fails in one of the two cardinal rules of untwinked characters.

1. No need to rely on a weapon for your base damage. (Must find good weapon)
2. No need to be in melee range. (Must have good def, blocking, res)

Hmm, how about druids? Or amazons? :hide:

druids and amazons are all capable of doing it. Why? They have skill that need + skills to be effective, and only + skills. they don't need anything else, this means the with less + skills, you will not be great, though not bad either. You always have 20 skills to put in the needed skill aswell as some synergies.
This means that only the barb is hard to play without good weapons. There might be other methodes to pull this char off. Though you can't do it the same way as the other types. Unless you can't a singer as truely vaible, though isn't that more a party char then a solo-er?

Always been partial to straf-a-zons. When young you gem/rune up any socketable bows until you find something decent. By the time you get a decent merc and Valk you just stand back and mow'm down. You can get away without maxing resists or having god-like armor since she's a ranged attacker. Course you do need to play her smart-
