hell baals are a no-can-do, i'm afraid, unless i get major help. my chars don't last long the wsk, in general. i could host either normal or nm baals, though. I have chars at appropriate levels for both those locations.
EDIT: @ San: alright, lemme re-gear my blizzy for survival and i'll put a game up.
My Avenger is the perfect tank. Plus he's got Conviction, which should help any elemental chars.
@Jaedhann: Sure :smiley: Plus you'll get good exp there.

I wasn't allowed to open up the port, because basically anyone should be able to access your computer through that port, if they really wanted to.

anyway. game's up. IP 192.168.1.64. I'll see who's comingThat's your 'internal' IP address. You have one of those broadband routers, right? Well, that IP address is the one assigned to your computer by the router; it's not the one assigned to your router by your ISP. To get that, go to www.whatismyip.com (http://www.whatismyip.com).
After doing this, you need to do two other things. First, make sure you have a static IP address, rather than one assigned through DHCP (I'll explain DHCP at the end, as it's a technical thing you don't need to know). Assuming you're using Windows, you'll probably accomplish this with the following steps:
Right-click the network icon in your system tray and select 'properties', or you can access it via the start menu or control panel (depends on your windows version, and how it's configured).
Once the dialog box appears, click the 'properties' button. You should then get a second dialog box with a list of protocols that are associated with that network adapter. If you're not sure what the protocols are, they will have names like 'Client for Microsoft Networks', 'IPX/SPX Compatible Protocol', and 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)'.
Go through this list and find the TCP/IP one; select it, and click Properties. You should then get a new dialog box where you have two radio button choices. One of these choices will say something like 'obtain an IP address automatically', and the other will say 'use the following IP address', along with some fields for you to fill in. Select this second one.
Now you need to fill in your desired IP address. The first three numbers will be the same as the IP address you gave above, so your desired IP should be 192.168.1.xxx, with xxx being the value you choose. I suggest 200.
Once you click the radio button to specify a fixed IP address, it will also force you to specify a DNS server. You can just use the address of your router if you like (which would be 192.168.1.1 in your case), or you can specify another server. I'll explain DNS below, too, in case you're curious.
Anyways, that's all you need to do to get a fixed IP address. If you do this with multiple computers on the same network (connected to the same router), just make sure each address is unique. Assign the same address to two computers at the same time, and the network will develop a case of schizophrenia. :)Assuming you've done the above steps correctly, you should still be able to surf the web, join games, and all the other stuff you normally do, but to be able to host, there is one final thing you need to do. That is to set up the port forwarding on your router.
How you do this varies from router to router, but for the type of router we're talking about- these little home broadband routers- you typically do it through a web interface provided by the router. Simply enter the IP address of your router (remember from the DNS step above that it is 192.168.1.1) into the address bar, and hit enter, and you should get a configuration page (possibly along with a password prompt). Somewhere in the options (typically under 'advanced', but it depends on the router), you will have the option to set up forwarding. All you need to do is forward port 4000 to the fixed IP address you set up previously (192.168.1.200, if you followed my suggestion). If your router gives you a choice on the type of packets to forward (being TCP or UDP), you only need to forward TCP ones. Save the settings on the router, and you should now be able to host games.
DHCP- Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. This allows a host (in this sense, a 'host' is any device with an IP address, including your computer(s), router, etc) to obtain an IP address automagically from the network. Exactly how it works is a little too technical, but suffice to say that the host (your computer in this case) says 'I need an IP address', and the router (since it controls your local network) responds with an IP address from a pool of available addresses. The reason I suggested using 192.168.1.200 as your address is so it would be unlikely to conflict with the DHCP-assigned addresses. Many routers have their DHCP-pooled addresses (the available ones) start at xxx.xxx.xxx.100 or some such, so making sure your fixed address is well above this number (or outside the range of available addresses entirely, if you can manage that) eliminates the possibility that the router will assign the address you've chosen to another machine. Remember that when using a static IP address (one not obtained through DHCP), the router is out of the loop, and doesn't know the address is taken. Thus, if the address is within the range it assigns to DHCP clients, it's possible to have two machines with the same address.
The reason you have to use a static IP address when setting up forwarding is simple: if you don't, then the next time you boot your machine (or in some cases, after you leave it on long enough), the IP address can change. If that happens, then your router will no longer be forwarding traffic to the proper host (in fact, it will probably forward it to limbo, because there won't be any host with that address). Quite often, you will get the same IP address through DHCP. This is especially true if you only have one computer hooked to the router, or if you boot multiple machines in the same order all the time, but it's not a guarantee. Assigning a fixed IP address avoids the possibility the router will get the forwarding wrong.
DNS- Domain Name Service. A DNS server (yes, I know- it's redundant with 'service' and 'server') translates URIs (Uniform Resource Identifiers; you're probably familiar with URLs, or Uniform Resource Locators, which are a type of URI) into the numeric IP address. Think of it like a phone book for IP addresses. You want to connect to, say, diabloii.net, so your computer queries the DNS server, which tells it the IP address is 89.107.69.68.
If you want to directly use the DNS server that your ISP provides, then before you set up your static IP address, open a command prompt (start menu -> run -> type 'cmd' or (if running Win9x/ME) 'command' and hit enter). Then type 'ipconfig /all' (I think for Win9x/ME it's 'winipcfg', but I'm not 100% sure), and hit enter, and it should tell you the DNS server(s) that your machine is set up to use. Note it/them down, and you can enter them when setting up the stati IP address. This is unnecessary, though, since if you use your router's address, and it is unable to resolve a URI, it will pass the request up the chain. Since your router knows what DNS server to use (it was informed of this by your ISP when it requested an IP address from your ISP through DHCP), the request will go to the appropriate DNS server. Sometimes these things go up the hierarchy several steps; think of it like phone books with ever-greater coverage. Can't find that cute babe's phone number in your little black book? Check the local white pages. Not in there? Check the metropolitan white pages, and so on.
Anyways, I hope this post (long and boring though it may be) has helped to demystify some of this computer networking mumbo-jumbo stuff. It's really not hard once youplay around with it a little bit. More importantly, let's hope it helps you host games. After all, despite what this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-sdITmdudY) says, the internet is not for porn. It's for Diablo II. :)

EDIT: err, green aura ran into the deadly port-forwarding blockade and got stopped in its tracks.
Game down. I don't know what's up with hosting here at the g/f's place. Sometimes it works fine, and other times it doesn't. Router and computer settings are all kosher, so I have a feeling my ISP is screwing with one thing or another.
@Bliven: I didn't get a message you entered my game, but I did get a message you were dropped due to timeout. Bizarre how it won't let you join, but will give me a message you've left. Ahh well, I guess we have the 'lying message log' as well as the 'lying character screen'. :/
On another note, I think I'll just stick to the Ancients' Way unless I'm partied up. WSK/Throne take my sorcy way too long on /p8 with all the OKs and undead-raisers.
