hey i was thinking about this yesterday. if you play one player, you must get really good drops from characters right? since you have no one to trade with. also, can you even do runs such as baal runs in single player? i guess the only way to level is just go through everywhere on the map. wow i just realized ive never played single player. haha
Nope, the drop rates are the same as on the realms. You can do runs on single player though. There are some applications to help with muling (like ATMA) as well.
The big benefit of single player is, that, as long as you don't change difficulty, you have a fixed map. So if you put some time in rolling a good map, you can greatly speed up your MFing. On battlenet you'd get a temp ban MFing so fast.
you can make the monsters tougher and drops better with /players 8
and you can use ATMA (http://atma.diabloii.net/)to mule items
but drops arent any better than they would be on bnet
ladder only items can drop
except that you cant get anni or torch
with the rwm you can make ladder runewords
but finding the required runes is a different story

Note that in SP you have some extra commands available. One of these is the "/players X" command where X is a number between 1 and 8. This would make the game act as if that number of people were in the game. So monsters give more experience, have more health and deal more damage with higher numbers. Drop rates are only affected by odd number of virtual players (1, 3, 5,7). This allows us Single Player (http://forums.diabloii.net/forumdisplay.php?f=3) people not have to rerun areas too much to level.
If you peek at the link I provided to the SP forum you'll see that there is trading in SP available, as well as other things like tournaments and the like.
