View Full Version : computer video card shader question
Hey everyone, I'm trying to run a game demo (splinter cell chaos theory) on my PC, and an error message shows up and days "DirectX Shader Model 1.1 is required"
I have DirectX9 installed, and I think DirectX9 gives the shader 3.0. Is it because my graphics card (Intel integrated 256MB graphics card) doesn't support shaders?
Or what can I do to get this Shader Model 1.1?
Thanks!
Er you can't download Shader Models, I believe it is a feature that the card has to come with. So I can only assume your's does not, so you are probably out of luck.

You are right. Shader technology is inherent to the card itself. It either has it or it does not.
Another question, since my computer graphics card has no support for shader 1.1, which of the following 3 games will it be able to run? (processor speed is 3.0GHz Intel Pentium 4, 1GB RAM, and 224MB of graphics memory)
Elders Scroll III: Morrowind
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Lockdown
Medieval II Total War
you need to be more specific with your graphics card. What brand and model?
as for the games, this site is very helpful to determine if your computer meets the minimum requirements: http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest

Integrated 256MB Card? Really?
It's an Intel Integrated graphics card that came with the PC.

No, dxdiag says it's got 224MB. But it is Intel integrated.

Then my guess is you won't be able to run any of those unless you buy another graphics card.
And my question was if it really had 256MB of memory because that's insane for an on-board card.
you should be able to run Marrowind i think
You need pixel shader 1.1 or better to run Medieval II total war and Rainbow Six Lockdown.
I'm used that systemrequirementslab thing to test to see if I could run DOOM 3, and under the Pixel Shader, it says that I have version 2.0
Wonder why I can't run something with 1.1...
i dont think any older intel onboard graphics has pixel shader especially if you're running pentium 4.

Why are you using integrated graphics!?!??!?!!

But the thing says I have pixel shader 2.0! haha, anyway... My processor speed and all passes for most of the games, but for the video card requirements, it says I have 224MB of video RAM (as does dxdiag) but I can't even run games with 32MB video according to the website...
And I have run games that require 64/128MB (Rome Total War and Fable the Lost Chapters)
Why are you using integrated graphics!?!??!?!!
well most retail pcs even with vista today come standard with integrated graphics.. and everyday consumers don't know how to upgrade...

graphics memory isn't the only thing that determines if you can run a game. There are a lot of other issues such as rendering and stuff that's required in newere games. Systemrequirements may not be correct if you have pixel shader 2. If you provide the exact intel graphics model (by going to display properties --> settings --> advance --> Intel extreme graphics and that should have the model number) i can look it up.

I'm one of those consumers.
And the exact model number is Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family ran on Windows XP Pro.
Systemrequirementslab says I can run GTA San Andreas which requires 1.1 shader, but not Chaos theory, which also requires 1.1 shader...
dxdiag now says that my approximate video memory is 192MB now.
that's a pretty old graphics chipset.
here's a short list of games that are compatible with it: http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/intel915g/sb/CS-011967.htm
as you can see many newer games are not compatible.

My computer came with the exact comp card. It could run doom 3 and half life 2 (at lower settings), but not battlefield 2, oblivion, etc.
Integrated is useless. Upgrade now!
edit: hey...that list describes exactly what happened on my comp.

Thanks, the list is really helpful... Thanks again.
I hope you didn't pay much for that computer.
Integrated graphics cards are about as much fun as wiping your backside with a cheese grater.
This is spam. I hope I interrupted donny filling the front page.
I do second what donny said :)
It doesn't even take a game or CAD to make integrated graphics hurt.
LOL, it's my dad's... I didn't pay anything :)
Sorry about double post, couldn't edit, do you think my computer will run Rollercoaster Tycoon 3?

I have a PowerBook G4, 1.67GHz, 1.5Gb of RAM and a 128Mb Radeon Mobility 9700.
I can run RCT3 but I have to turn down the graphics a lot and it's still kinda slow at times. It's an awesome game though :D.
