Here's what i found from the barb FAQ right here at diabloii.net:

"How can I whirl better?

Contrary to popular belief, it's not as easy as the stereotype makes it out to be. Of course, clicking on one side of the crowd works, but there are much better techniques to use. You don't have to just click whirl stop click whirl stop, holding down your mouse button and "sweeping" and area is MUCH better, and good against tough foes or ones that take a long time to die (Cow level/Izual comes to mind). You can leech much better with this and it leaves very little time for the enemy to hit you (and even if they do, you are probably whirling/killing/leeching). Another popular use is the "short-whirl" a whirlwind that is literally short in length. It typically goes just a bit further than your warcries under your barb. A good player can make use of a short whirl with a longer range weapon by "keeping them at arms reach", and there are many uses for this in dueling too. Against tougher foes, short whirls can quickly make mincemeat out of them, while leaving your barb with little damage. Practice make perfect, as they say. "

However, i find myself not being able to hold and sweep as it says. Does sweeping mean leading the whirlwind thorugh an area? cause its still click stop click stop apparently.

By the by, how do i survive nightmare? like 70% of all the unique monsters have mana burn, and i only got 103 mana. with only 5% mana leech, reduced by half even furthur due to nightmare mode, i find myself just ing normal attacks most of the time. i JUST completed act i, and i'm killing thing so slow i wish i could scream lol. Please guide!

Umm those are pretty high end gear are they not?
I'm playing on lan with a bunch of friends so i cant trade on battle.net either. By the way, holding down the whirlwind button, find myself spining for half a sec before stopping as i think the mouse signaled the continued click when it was on a monster a foot away.

I was thinking more about techniques

the ww in place thing is lag.
you need to do more controlled short ww. try not to pass through the monsters byt ww besides them .
If botd is too much high end get ik set its decent enough for general pvm. Shael ik maul, and dont forget to use leap for croud control

One technique to handle packs is to clip the edge of the pack over and over, so that you make sure you're hitting the same monsters.

If you jump into the fray and just whirl aimlessly, you'll be hitting monsters randomly, who regenerate while you hit the others ^^

Ah so is that what's meant by sweeping? yeah i think i do that. Right now generally i think i'm only in the party to give the BO and BC warcry buffs. it takes 4-5 sweeps to kill a bunch of monsters (i'm level 47 now with some yellow great sword wth a 20-40 damage range). Its pretty sad really. I'm just holding out for 60, when everyone says it'll get better =) cheers mates.

If you are on LAN (basically SP), it will be rather troublesome, since it would be difficult to get even an upped steeldriver (which is cheap, and will pwn NM). Your weapon is lacking, and no amount of level is going to help. Also remember that mana leech depends on your damage, and in your case, your damage is low, so you can't leech much at all. Try to see whether you can shop for a weapon with more damage, to start. Failing that, try to make some cheap runeword weapons. Since you are playing LAN, there's also no insight...... (unless you play runeword mod). It's a god send to any character that needs mana.

The sweep is to hold your right mouse down, and before you finish your WW, move your right mouse to where you want your next WW to end (without letting go). Once the first WW ends, you will start the second immediately. You can just hold your right mouse down and move back and forth or in whatever pattern you wish, and you will keep whirling. Of course, if you have little mana, this is not going to help.
