View Full Version : ISO: Non-Cookiecutter
It's always fun to hear some of the ideas out there, but I'm really trying to brainstorm a unique pvp build which isn't easy so I was looking for a little forum assistance. There's gotta be something out there that isn't so damn cookie cutter, but really holds it's own in pvp. I've done throwers, dream sorcies, warcry, etc. which can sometimes be good vs. a particular class or type but will then get owned by everything else in the game. For example, my wc barb was a hoot vs. trappers but then any max block char would totally negate the warcry not to mention dr. I was thinking of some kinda wc/frenzy or wc/thrower but dmg and ar become issues.
I do know that no char can fully dominate, I'm just looking for something that will at least stand a chance vs. several other classes, and with A LOT of practice maybe beat majority of other classes (but of course not all). I know this thread surfaces every now and then, but I back tracked a ways and couldn't find one so I thought I'd put it out there again.
Thx for ideas in advance!

Do you know what are the cookie-cutter builds? Builds capable of what you want to do. That's why they are so common.
Of course I understand why people make cookie cutter-builds.
I'm just looking for ideas please... TY.

 non-cookie cutter and "ownage" do not usually go together...
just make a regular throw barb. they can be amazing if built right and i havent seen one played in about a year.
A zerker barb might just do the job.

The builds I've been pvping with lately:
Mage
Critical strike/plague zon - my current build is 9k cs 10k plague. Even a plain old legit cs zon is a pretty rare sight these days
59 charge/smite - It's great fun what you can do with this guy in a public duel game. He beats a lot of high level smiters:
Grief naga
Um'ed hoz
Um'ed shaft
string of ears
Um'ed RockStopper
20ias/15str/6dex/26 light res gloves
waterwalks
Bk//ravenfrost
3 pcombat 97 life amulet
cta/spirit on switch
20 life/resist scs
He does a bit less damage than a well built high level smiter but the range on the naga really helps vs all the pb smiters out there. He has 3,200 life as well as maxed resists in hell with decent stack.
summoning druids and necros can be pretty nasty.
I saw this one summoning necro dominate a pub. What he did was that he made a portal into the cow level and summoned like 16 cows lol and then just slaughtered everyone. Of cause there are a lot of builds that can negate this but even so the summoner can win if he plays it right.
You could also make a bowa desynch zon? 125% fwr is enough to make you run invisible I believe. That's how much my bowa has and people say she disappears off the map all the time.

Life Tap or Sanctuary > Skeletons, 3 minutes of randoming or Life Tap > Revives.
A summoner cannot beat most casters. For example, a Windy totally trashes them, just as FB sorcs do.

Doom > Desynch, Doom > high speed knockback arrows.
^ yea but doom is considered bm by most people...
Want to duel? I've handled some bm bvc doom barbs pretty nicely.

Yes duh, but the poster is looking for a non-cookie cutter build. Please read the thread. Windy's and fb's are considered cookie cutters obviously.

Yes, but he never said that he will not duel cookie-cutters. And non-cookies always lose to cookies. This is because cookies taste better.

I agree, take a look at this one.

yea i second that fuzzy-dodger build,
might want to also consider a
wolfbarb | fire druid | charger/medic pally | rabies druid
I was thinking of makng a barb that uses Widowmaker+psn/life sc's. ON switch would be 2x death's web. The +2 to skills on each wand is also a decent prebuff. Fire arrows, switch out Death's Web, tele away, repeat.
I am thinking of something like:
20 Shout
20 BO
20 Iron Skin
20 Leap (max could be dope)
Rest in prereq's, BC, Natural Resistance/Increased Speed
Could be fun, too expensive for me :(

The fuzzydodger is fun for a short while, but you will get bored eventually with her.
wolfbarbs can be really strong/effective allroundchars.
Also if you have the patience to learn the firedruid (learn the spelltimers/tactics/loads of buttons etc) then it can be really an awesome dueller, until you get absorbed. I once saw an amazing fissure/tornado hybrid who did great.
Poison javazon with pretty decent fcr is one of the chars i still want to try.
You could also try an auradin in bearform.
I've tried this before, but it was very early in the ladder and even with extremely high dmg, he got squashed by most chars..a fireclaw wolf with max armegeddon. My old one had a 3k armegeddon which helped at the time with small dmg and confusion, but if I rebuild I can get around 6.5k meteors, also 10k fireclaws. First build I only used oak too, so I'd add ravens and wolves for the rebuild which, yes I know, they wander but still help vs. foh, TS, charge, etc. I would also use enigma and roughly (20) 3max/20ar/3frw scs, (4) ss gcs w/ frw.... rest of gcs are lifers. A grand total of 163 frw seems it would solve some of the problems I had before. Of course very mobile and skilled casters would be impossible but if i definately would have a better chance with a range 5 wep, crazy frw and 7k meteors falling all over the place.
Gear would be something like this..
Jalal's fire facet
Nigma mage
PB w/ 2 shaels and 4 ias/2nd mod(ar,res) jewels
SS fire facet
Dungos
Treks or Gores
Metalgrid/Cat's Eye, Ravens or Angelics
CTA, spirit switch
inventory: ss gcs (life and frw), frw/max/ar scs, anni, torch

zomg @ lvl 49 fohpally.
just made him, VERY non-cookie cutter, as all fohers ive ever seen are hi lvl, or lvl 30 LLD's. mine does 4k foh (~half of hi lvl foh's dmg, still need 1 more pcomb and a new armor)
Gear-
Helm- +1pally/20fcr/20frw/20ares/14ed faceted circ
+2Pcomb/energy/res/tele charges <-- :azn: ammy
3/3/1 -25/+25 FoH Stick
Faceted 217ed Shaft (gonna upgrade to 4os life armor with 4 facets, soon.)
Faceted 189ed HoZ
15dr SoE
SoJ
Raven
Bloodfists
30frw-tri-res boots
hes VERY fun.
also may i suggest a townie-druid (wears bramble, etc, uses grizzly to annoy ppl dueling. :)
I vote for WolfBarb. Non-cookie, but I used to do relatively well with him against most casters, which isn't bad considering I'm not much of a dueler.

plague javazon... 100k dmg ftw
plague javazon... 100k dmg ftw
Plaguezon's are actually funny characters. They have a over 100k displayed damage, but the duration is like what.. a couple of minutes? Along with the fact that the poison can be reduced to almost nothing via resistances and PLR. A tad bit of PLR can already cut the damage by half.

Read his post. He already tried those.
fury/rabies druid these can kill alot considering its not a cookie cutter if played well it can be realy tough.
Foh or auradin are non-cookie cutters and surprisingly can take care of alot of pubby chars due to the fact of alot of newbies or badly prepared chars.
A foh/auadin hybrid is strong i used this in pub and u can get a decent foh of like 6k with the right gear and still have a fully synergised fire aura etc.
chargers a very nice little build for pubs.
plague zons will never work in pubs because once someone sees they are poisioned they will run straight to town and heal and becasue the poision is so slow its even worst.

I'm considering both of these definately. Also thinkin ama-sin/kicker. The foh/auradin would prolly have nasty 1pt charge vs. low def chars too

Any Widowmaker based build tends to be able to surprise most public duelers. Although they amy not be the most powerful chars, they can do pretty well. Someone once said: "put a widowmaker on any char and it will kill"
Pros of each char class
Assasin: Venom, BoS, WoF-lock... (I have such an assa)
Sorceress: Enchant, Teleport, ES...
Paladin: Auras, easy to hybrid.
Barbarian: Huge life.
Necromancer: Curses, bone walls, minions. (style points)
Druid: HoW, Summons (style points)
Anyway, if you intend to play in high level hell games most of these builds might deal a bit too little damage to be truly competitive. But any build can have some fun with a widowmaker from time to time. Few of my chars have been asked to show gear as often as my lvl 69 bow assasin. And it's great fun!
I have a couple basic questions on a bow/ama-sin, maybe u can enlighten me jako. i know there's a guide, but it looks old.
bramble, trangs using BoS?
cta pb w/ ss on switch for kicks?
also, i was thinking about socketing widow w/ a nef instead of the recommended um...that make sense?

Well, I'm not a pvp expert and the build is highly adaptable as the bow only requires 20 skill points in venom to live up to it's maximum efficiency. I personally use bramble and trangs using BoS for mobility and to hit last bp, But for other varieties of the build I could see Enigma, Fort, Coh, Duress etc as viable alternatives... Fade would probably be viable aswell, as my builds main drawback is it's fragility.
The rest of the gear depends highly on how you want to hybrid the char, the guide suggests lightning traps which I guess could be pretty effective. Also gets past the troubles with low dmg output.
I went a pretty much full out setup for bow useage, and maxed mindblast and got 1pt WoF to keep the enemies in place.
Switch depends highly on what kind of build you choose, a trapper might use CtA or trap claws, while a wwsin will ofc use chaos, personally I currently prebuff Venom on switch.
Nef, Shael, Um, Hel or facet might all work fine for your bow. Although you will probably be shooing too slow to keep them away with just the Nef, I used one of those early on and it could prove helpful against low fhr fohers. (that was back in the days before I decided to get WoF)
My assa at lvl 69 (no anni or torch) deals about 4k minimum dmg with bow, but her setup is rather damage oriented.
Short summary of the build: very fun and highly configurable build, it's biggest drawbacks are however relatively low dmg output and being extremely fragile. Build fares well against barbarians and hammerdins, but gets into heavy trouble against charging smiters and bowazons.
However: Don't take my words as definite, the list of builds that can benefit from a Widow Maker is huge. It's all about creativity.
