gone forever, however weapons like insight will enable IG to have meditation aura, so its not totaly a waste.
and watch out for iron maiden, it can easily kill your IG

Consider making a insight weapon using a really low damage weapon so that the IM doesn't ruin your day.

Just so you know, the iron golem, unlike other golems, will travel with you between games.
