It's that time of the year, guys and gals! I've created a Yahoo! group for us OTFers. Go ahead and sign up now, but make sure to actually fill your brackets after Selection Sunday on the 11th. Oh, and you don't have to actually know anything about college hoops to play. In fact, it's usually the people who know the least about the game who seem to do the best!

Also, let me hear some Final Four selections! Barring any rediculous upsets, I think it could be UCLA, Wisconsin, North Carolina and Florida.
I say UCLA and WIS b/c of their seniority combined with their clutch performers (Afflalo and Tucker). North Carolina has some incredible talent, and I'm afraid Hansboro will be going on a tear after his recent Duke rumble. And finally, the team everyone is writing off, Florida. They may be slumping now, but once they realize they're in the tourney, they'll wake up quickly. With the experience they have from last year, I think the Gators are still the team to beat once tourney time rolls around.
And yes, I avoided picking UT. I'd love to see us go that far, but frankly we're just too young and inexperienced. Durant and Augustin have the ability to take us all the way, but I don't think they have the experience. A Final Four appearance or a Championship just seems like too much to expect from a bunch of Freshmen and Sophomores. Maybe next year, if Augustin stays.
what is this final four you speak of? I know what the frozen four is but that isn't until the end of March. I'll participate though so everyone else can be guaranteed no to finish last.

Yay! I don't have to set it up this year.
I'm in, even though I barely followed college basketball this year. The extent of my knowledge is that Duke slipped this year and the Gophers suck
Speaking of Duke, my favorite joke about them was when they slipped out of the rankings earlier this year (credit to The 10 Spot on SI):
Duke dropped out of the Top 25 for the first time in more than a decade on Monday, finishing at No. 26. In related news, the AP will now reconfigure the poll as the Top 30.

Hilarious, and disgusting.
It's championship week right now, Rafty, so you can catch up on a whole hell of a lot by plopping yourself in front of ESPN for the next week.

Good luck. I've only met D2netDad and LunarSolaris. If I get the chance I might have to buy our two members in Utah a beer. They'll have to come over Pocatello though, I'm not drinking Utah near-beer.

IF HC and I win the $340 Mill Mega Ball we will fly almost everyone to a party on a nice warn island in the Caribbean. You will need a swimsuit though to attend.

That rulese me out. If I show up in a swimsuit, everyone leaves.
I'm usually up for meet ups anyways.

Not a chance. Now if Freet showed up in a speedo...

I appreciate, but I know myself. I'll wear....other skimpy clothes, ok?
the thought of Freet in a speedo just made me ill.
We can worry about what you will be wearing IF we win.

....or we can worry about Freet in a speedo (or without a speedo) now.

Nothing but sandals and a smile?
That's what we need, an OTF nudie beach!

Uh...no sandals but a nice skimpy outfit. Last time I did that though.....I realised I can't combine wearing a skimpy outfit and towerclimbing.
There are two rules set in stone for the NCAA Tournament:
1. The most talented, deepest, and best all around team will not win.
2. It is NEVER ok to root for Duke.

Sure there is. We can root for them to suck even worse than they already do.

They still have college basketball here in the US?

It's weird that you'd say that, because I can't turn around without hearing about college basketball right now, and every channel is talking about the tournament and brackets and such. It's not like hoops has gone anywhere. Maybe you're mistaking it for hockey?
OT, I'd be up for a Texas sized OTF meeting, here in the capital. I don't really have the money to travel anywhere else.

I don't even believe all the rooting in the world could help duke past the second round. They'll be a 5 seed at best, which will leave them with someone they can't beat in the second round.
And since everyone has gotten a little off the topic, I'd have to say Kansas is going into the tourny with a full head of steam, and florida is not. Florida got worked by LSU, without the big baby, and LSU isn't good to begin with.
My final four will include Kansas, and wisconsin, my other 2 are left up in the air.
A few mentionables are UCLA, and UNC, but UNC as well as UCLA have been beat on more than 1 occasion by teams they shouldn't have lost to.
new ot thread? spam guys,spam
I won't be joining the festivities here this year. Winning 2 years in a row would be bad taste. ;)
I will give you some numbers to chew on, when filling out your brackets.
NCAA numbers:
1st round:
All #1's and #2's advance 15's are 4/88 and 16's are 0/88
13's and 14's are < 19% combined 1 out of 5 (pick 1 13 and 1 14 or 2 of 1) rest pick 3's and 4's
9-12 (upset central)
12 seeds have won 11/24 matchups (nearly 50%)
9/8 game: More 9 seeds win ~60%
2nd round:
Advance #1's {86%}
if you picked a 9-12... (they win 50% in round 2) 12 seed 14/29 10 seed 12/29
13's or lower in 2nd round (only 9% advance)
Sweet 16:
3 #1's will advance (70% advance)
Never advance a < 12 seed into the 8 (never happened)
Elite 8:
Advance 1 or 2 #1 seeds (not 3, not 4) (3 or more have advanced only 4 out of the last 22 years)
Don't advance a < 8 seed (2 out of 24)
Final 4:
Advance a team no lower than 6 to championship. (1 out of 22)
Championship
4 seed or higher to win it all, no 5 or lower has ever won.
-D2netDad
well that just takes all the fun out of my method of randomly picked based on nothing in particular.
Championship
4 seed or higher to win it all, no 5 or lower has ever won.
-D2netDad
Except for Kansas (1988), NC State (1983), and Villanova (1985) of course. I think I'll do my own homework, thanks.
Good catch. Cut//paste jobby.
-D2netDad
All I know is that UNC is not going to win. I'll post my picks as soon as I can. Sooooo much to do this week not related to basketball.
I did surprising well so far for not knowing much about basketball, I'm sure however that will all fall apart soon so don't worry if I'm ahead of you.

I screwed up by not saving after I chose my champion. I also had to make my picks in a rush, Monday morning before heading out to Enchanted Rock. Therefore, my bracket sucks :( I didn't get to do any homework on the teams.
However, that hasn't prevented me from enjoying the hell out of the games! I've had the tv on one game and cbssportsline up on my computer watching a different game. The TAMUCC "Lettermen" had me a little excited when they were up something like 21-3 in the first half against Wisconsin, but I knew they would fall eventually. Very often a tiny no-nothing team will get a huge jump on the more experienced team because they come to play with much more passion and energy early on. The better team usually always wins, however, in the 2nd half when they realize this game isn't a joke, and when they finally fall into rhythm. Wisconsin just had way better talent than the Islanders.
The Texas game frightened me a bit, but it was fun to watch it at a standing-room-only bar because it gave everyone a reason to hate on some Maroon-clad Aggies all over again. I think there were about 100 Longhorn fans and one table of six NMSU fans. Poor guys.
Today's (Saturday's) games were much more exciting. I had a hell of a time watching VCU almost nail Pitt and Vandy squeak out a win against Washington State (who I had losing in the 1st round actually), at the same time.
I think the most surprising outcome so far has been Butler beating Maryland. I thought MD had a great chance to beat Florida if they got that far, and I didn't expect them to lose to Butler, a team that hasn't been impressive as of late. I totally called Winthrop, though, like everyone else didn't also, though.
And does anyone else have an easier road to the Final Four than Kansas? They get an underachieving Kentucky next, and then the winner between VT and Souther Illinois. And then probably UCLA. The Bruins won't be prepared at all to stop all of Kansas' high flying youngsters. Had I the time to look closer, I would've chosen Kansas to go to the Final Four for sure. I have no idea why I chose Villanova to upset them in the OTF bracket.
