For most characters the axiom is enough strength for gear, enough dexterity for maximum blocking with your chosen shield, all the rest into vitality and none in energy.
Now for shifters (any variety of wolves and bears) this is usually somewhere in the ballpark of a hundred if you want to have some leeway with gear switches (i.e. "bramble" on a rabies hybrid). With a torch, annihilius, and probably a raven or two, dexterity on most shifters may be a little more than strength (sorry for being so vague, there're a couple threads about this topic - give them a search). And of course all the rest goes into vitality.
For druid casters (notably wind druids, fire druids, shamans), most use "enigma" to keep strength as close to base and still be able to equip most heavier equipment using the aforementioned armours strength bonus. Dexterity will be about the same here if you aim for a maximum blocking setup (usually for pvp). Again all the rest of your points should go into vitality. Energy is usually augmented by gear, and warrants no investment.
Hope that helps.
Unless you're makin' a titan build for PvM. The titan fury wolf maxes strength to the point of almost being unbalanced. But what a hit it can do. Add in an upped ribcracker and Tombreaver on switch and look out! Another varient is the Vita build who focuses on pumping vitality to the point of having thousands and thousands of hit points (add barb singer and OS and it really gets nuts).
good luck and good hunting!

Eh, I hate pure Vita Wolves. You only get 1.5 life per point which makes the build's benefits not all that great unless you have maxed Lycanthropy and Oak Sage.
Also, please read the guides section. A few may be out of date however the skeleton of the builds has generally remained the same.
