Okay so I've heard about the "kurast has good rune drops" but i haven't heard much else. Is it just "lower kurast" or is it all three. if it's all three, should i also go into the temples? Do it hit every single chest or are there some specific chests people are talking about when they say "special chests"?

Lower Kurast is run mostly on Players8 setting (single player) on any map that spawns two bonfires, since bonfires have two houses beside them (one to the west and one to northeast) where the west house has two superchests and the northeast one has one superchest and a weapon rack.

You generally just search for a good map (two bonfires not too far from the WP) and then open those 6 chests as fast as you can, look if any runes dropped, pick up if there were any interesting ones, then exit game and make another and do it over (and over and over and over and over) again until you find a HR (jah, cham and zod isn't possible, tho).

Personally, I do the same thing, but less efficiently with regards to HRs. The reason: Those superchests also drop a LOT of charms, jewels and flawless gems, which I pick up and use for crafting/ID. So I pick up a lot more than "necessary", thus my runs are slower, and less efficient.

Most efficient would be using the RRM (Red Rune Mod) and then just look for the text ("Ber", "Sur", "Lo", "Ohm", "Vex", "Gul", "Ist", "Mal"...) written in red on the ground. If there's nothing like that there, move on as fast as possible.

While doing this it's pretty easy to fall into what I like to call "Autorun-mode", which is when the runs go automatically, and the lack of concentration makes you miss stuff like blue tiaras, yellow boots, and other potentially priceless items.

The other Kurast areas are much less popular because
- Monsters are more dangerous
- Lower superchest density
- Running elsewhere in addition to LK makes runs slower = less drops over time

Not only special chest are interesting, all normal chests and "pops" have quite nice chance to drop "goods" - runes, gems, charms, jewels, amus, rings. If you play on BNet you can't do short runs like in SP (and you have no static map), but the chests are still worth running especially in full games.
Recent experimental studies proved that the special chests there are bugged (http://forums.diabloii.net/showthread.php?t=494938) somehow, they have better chance to drop Surs and Bers than they should have.

Just curious, so are *all* versions of D2X from v1.07 to v1.11 give LK Special Chests higher Rune drops? Or is it a specific version of D2X, and why is this?

I don't know if it is the only 1.11 feature or not (probably not).
Current most probable explanation is that the type of items dropping from the special chests is determined from one random number and on top of it, this number gets truncated to 16 bits, so there is a finite number of item patterns that could drop from them and 1 of them contains Sur and one of them Ber. Since no Lo and Ohm were spotted so far in LK Special chests, it's probable there is no item pattern containing them.
It's also probable that the patterns in the LK thread are counted for /players8 settings (Most SP players runs LK with that setting) and they could be different for other player numbers.

How do you use the red rune mod? What do you have to type?

If you play single player, look in the SPF FAQ. There are links to the RRM there. If you play on Battlenet you can't use it.
