Fairly new to D2 and just picked up Aldur's Jagged star which is triple socketed. I am a barbarian and what should i be looking for to put in those 3 sockets i.e. should I use pgems, runes, or what. I do have some runes and pgems. (thul, nef, ral, tal, ort, pgem emerald, pgem saphire, pgem ruby.

Thanks

I usually use Aldur's as a mid-level Conviction Zealot weapon- meaning I give it to a Paladin and fill it with three Orts, and then zeal with it while running Conviction. Great mid-game weapon. Another popular choice is filling it with Shaels to hit whatever breakpoint you want to aim for. Either way, I don't think it's that great of a Barb weapon- serviceable if you don't have anything better, but there are other options out there that are cheap and probably better.

Edit: From the sound of your post, you're very new to the game and really haven't accumulated much wealth yet. If I may ask, what kind of Barbarian do you have? Knowing what skills you use will help us figure out how you should use the weapon.

If using Whirlwind, socket Aldur's Rhythm with 1 Shael to start with. This will let you get to the last attack speed breakpoint with it. What you do with the other 2 sockets is up to you.

Dual-wielding Aldur's Rhythm, each Shael'd, make great weapons for up-and-coming Mace-based whirlwind Barbs, and can carry you right through Nightmare difficulty. They're great levelling tools for an IK Barb, usable until you can equip the Maul at level 76, or at the very least upgrading to dual Baranar's Star's at level 65.

So if it's Whirlwind, Shael it. Then go from there.

I usually fill the rest of the holes with Ith runes. Anything more expensive tends to be kind of a waste.

I'm fairly new to D2 and my barb is using concentration as it's attack item. I do have 2 handed axe but wanted a 1 hand weapon to compliment. If I add a shael should I aim for whirlwind attack? 1 shael gives me something extra when I finally add 1 to whirlwind? I'n going for strength and dexterity....The hit cost is something like 250-400 and concentration takes it to something like 400-750. My defense is about 1800 and attack rating of 1500 with concentrate of 3100 points.

I don'tthink that weapon will get you through hell.

Normal and nm are fairly easy for a barb, Hell will be a challenge.

Why waste expensive runes on this weapon if it will be obsolete soon?

Have you finished normal or nightmare?

Have finished normal and up to fighting Diablo. Hopefully soon I'll beat him and head on to Bail.
Is there a standard weapon I should try to get and put runes in it for a barb? You can't use runes on a green item can u or is it you can't use runes to create a rune word? What's good for a barb?

You can use runes on green (set) items.
You can use runes to make runewords.

Specialising in mace mastery?

my barb got eaten alive within 3 seconds of entering hell and is still not able to hurt anything. They require some pricey gear, but could also be that im a really bad player.

You cannot make a runeword in a green, yellow, gold, orange, or blue item.

Could u state your endgame plans for your barb build? As in is which barb combat skill would he max out and which weapon mastery? A full IK barb, be it a concentrate/beserk/WW barb is a good introduction to the barb class and it is a set that you could obtain slowly as you level up and collect flawless gems and cube them to be perfects ^^ The set has all the ingredients for a successful melee character in PvM : damage, resists, damage reduce, life/mana leech and crushing blow IMO Before lvl 32, one could equip IK belt, boots and gloves and even that +2 combat skills bonus from boots would mean more dmg for say WW and i like to use a +2 combat skills /Lore barb helm with nice mods like +BO for example. Personally i would say that this set, along with tal's and trang's are way up there in terms of cheap PvM solutions for hell mode :wink3:

I agree with SSoG on this. I use the Aldurs with Paladins. For them it's usually about speed and elemental damage of some kind. For a Barb though. . .there are better weapons out there.

Once I made a barb with maxed mace mastery, maxed bash, and maxed double swing. He was packing dual Aldurs maces that each had a shael, a perfect skull, and a perfect Emerald (I know- cheesy). That combo worked fairly well- right up until the first zombie in the blood moor in hell level. What a rude awakening. It was then that I realized that Barbs set-up and equiped like this hit the 'Hell Wall' very hard. I would read some of the build guides on the various hell viable builds out there and go from there.

Good luck!
