I just discovered this cube formula, it's a good way to get a 3 socket elite armor.

1 Eld Rune + 1 Chipped Gem + Low Quality Weapon = Normal Quality Weapon of same type
ilvl = 1. That is, regardless of what the ilvl was beforehand, it will be set to 1.

1 El Rune + 1 Chipped Gem + Low Quality Armor = Normal Quality Armor of same type

Does this give all items a max of 3 sockets? (weapons, helms, shields?)

If so, would it be possible to find a low quality paladin shield with high resists?

The formula sets the item's ilvl to 1, so you can check the number of sockets with ilvl=1 here (http://www.diabloii.net/items/sockets-list.shtml).
Using that formula will reroll the staffmod as far as I remember, so the resistance on the shield will be rerolled with ilvl=1.

Yep the staffmods are rerolled, so you'd probably lose the high resists.

The usage seems to be limited to elite armors.

What would be max resist on paladin shields at ilvl=1 ?

Also, could I roll the following low quality staves for +3 Energy shield?

Gnarled Staff
Gothic Staff
Elder Staff
Cedar Staff
Battle Staff

ES is a tier 4 staffmod and I don't think it can occur on ilvl 1 items. There is an excellent discussion on reducing items ilvl to get desired staffmods in this guide (http://forums.diabloii.net/showthread.php?t=473052)from Uzziah.
