Let me tell you my plight... I had a legit 159 Battle hammer, and traded it for a 2pally skill 39 Priz shield... within one week it poofed... then I traded a 10/30/20 39 priz -20 req tower that Dlee gave me for a 2 pally skill 20 priz pally ammy... it poofed... I am so sick of this.. I Hope this crap does not happen on ladder? Because I am interested in switching... So could anyone please get back to me and maybe help me out starting on ladder? I am thinking either a WW baba or a hammerdin?

What's your account name and a time you play?
And what would you be better eqiped to help a Hdin or a barb?

This happens just as much, if not more, on Ladder. I don't see how switching would make it better other then you'd be 'poorer' and thus less chance of trading for dupes. Since people usually only dupe the high quality items.

One advantage of the smaller realms (fewer people playing evermore, especially with all the lag duping lately) is there is a higher chance to get to know who is doing the trading. Don't trade from anyone who didnt find that item. Ask around in the trade game or channel about that persons reputation. Find mutual friends. Get their acct name and promise to msg them in about a week. I've posted this on the "duped soj" thread, and its true: if its a poor sad sack like yourself, that item will poof within a week and he just wont have it to trade anymore. So you've just saved yourself losing your own godly item. Now what if he is a major duper and has been pushing these things along all week --- the same item....? Well, then he is going to get a reputation for doing so, people will see him in alot of trade games. You would be surprised how much people know about each other, if u cast a web wide enough, to into full games and ask, go into trade games and ask, go to the trade channel and ask, etc...*

*if you go into a game and ask for any well known person, there is a good chance someone will know who they are. Why wouldnt they also know that persons reputation?

Dont trust people who have been playing for just a few months. Have-nots are the most likely to be searching for duping methods or obtaining a dupe either accidentally or on purpose. Well, it is true too, that a good bargain can be had from a noobie who doesnt know what he's trading. But we all know that a deal too good to be true usuallyis deceptive.

If a godly item you purchase with ur own godly doesnt have a socket, socket it! This is especially easy to do on nonladder, with so many 1.01 soj's about. Some might call that cheating, but then getting a socket isnt that big a deal here in classic, u cant shael or um it, u know. Just socket it to protect yourself. Now i know that 39% priz shield was already pdiamonded, so thats a risky item to trade for. Protect yourself!

If you would like an enchant on USEast HC Classic ladder, send me a PM. I haven't been playing much recently on b.net but I'd be happy to help get you going if you'd like.

One of my friends socked a nice Yellow Bone Helm with PRuby, but now he's telling me that it just poofed. I was under the impression that socking items changes its ID number, or something like that, but apparently not. Hmm....

someone should make a thread with a list of acct names or char names who gave poofing dupes.

Let's say you came to a dueling game and ripped me a new one. I'm upset about it, and say "Yeah, that guy Forumfreak traded me dupes that poofed." Without proof a list like that could be used as a vengence tool. It's been dicussed before and as people can just make new accounts also it wouldn't be very useful.

i asked a question similar to this in another thread, and was told that socketing a rare does nothing to change the permenency of the item socketed. I, myself, have no clue...but it seems too easy, if it worked that way.
I think we'd see a bigger boom in duped godlys floating around the ladder...and they would be sticking around. And desired by some [like on nl] But as things stand now, i think someone who dupes one of their godlys and releases the dupes into the market is exposing the original item to the same risks as its duplicated counterparts. Assuming of course they start lugging it around public games. So if the item is in daily use [and the real godlies usually are] by the original owner, chances are hes not going to start flooding the market with copies of his prized din gear or w.e. Can you imagine all the dupers having to go to town to temp perm their gear after every cs run?

on topic:

yea ladder has gone to hell, fast. i play on west and i hear east is worse. the economy is shot, and will only get worse as the season stumbles on, people get more restless, and word spreads wider about just how easy it is to duplicate items. the ladder economy is DOA, and blizzard, i hope, is only seeming to do nothing about it because they are actually working on a fix-- instead of actually doing nothing because they just dont care anymore.

why have such a complex and enjoyable item and trading system in a game, if you're not, as a company, prepared to protect the integrity of the system you've created?

seems like such a waste to me.

the funny thing is i still can't stop playing the darn game:undecided:

I have a lvl 31 chant on East ladder, and NL. (softcore)

I know some collectors on NL that won't trade a damned thing since around thanksgiving due to all the poofy gear.

supposedly people are trading Dcara's for pskulls now, cause EVERYBODY has them.

I have heard some grumbling on ladder, that quite a few folks are selling everything off via paypal, and quitting until (if) a ladder reset occurs.

All of D2 has gone to hell because of all of the duping, and probably the best way to protect ourselves is to make a list of possibly duped items with a screenshot or exact name and mod description as well as a list of people who have them. However, there are two problems with this:

1. It is impossible to tell if you have a dupe or not until they poof.
2. Even if you do have the account name of the person you traded with, that same person can always make up a new account.

That said, anyone up for thise idea?

Of course, the other way to protect ourselves is to keep everything we find, but trading is also what makes the game fun.

Now, for those of you complaining about duped SoJs, why not sock items you already have on the spot? It's much safer than keeping them on characters while waiting for that godly item to appear in a trade game; it's probably duped anyway!

Sounds like a very nice idea Akukami. Just have to make a list for each realm with the duped items for that realm. With enough help from the people around, a list of the most duped items is easly made.

Wow, lots of stuff to comment on here.

The best way to protect yourself is by not trading (read: me). If you must trade, people on this site are the next safest option. Use a mod or another close friend to be a go-between.

A list of dupes would be tremendously helpful. Things like Dcaras and Imp Shanks are pretty obvious, but there are hundreds of items that most people do not know about. You can find a partial list here: D2.net banned items (http://forums.diabloii.net/showthread.php?t=130175). But on Classic the list may be different (shorter I would hope). If someone wants to put together the beginnings of a list of commonly duped items on Classic it would be a great help to those who want to trade.

Someone mentioned about Blizz fixing this situation. I am sure they are aware of it. They have mega-resources devoted to WoW and the expansion. They can't work on everything at once. Maybe now that the expansion is out they can dedicate some resources to D2. I am sure they have to patch the expansion and are probably working on another one to keep the $15 per month per user coming.

I am sure they still care about D2. It is a franchise they have commited to and will not abandon it. My opinion, nothing else. I have no connections with them. From what I have read in the gaming press, they will continue to support D2 and even D3 at some point.

Well IMO they havent done anything about the dupeing and wont, dupeing has been going on since diablo1 and was in classic before the LOD, so if nothing has been done about it nothing will.... D2 makes blizz no money and just takes up server space... why are they going to care... yeah its a dedicated game and ppl have been playing it for years, includeing myself but i left the game several times due to being hacked, even due to bordeom, and now i been playing for about month or so and all i hear about is dupe this and dupe that... so im not tradeing unless its an item i dont care to lose.... thats what im doing, my fav part of the game is mfing anyways so ill do 50+ runs a night to see what i can get

on the mfing note, as other post have brought up, the rune situation is jsut out of control, i mean many ontop of many of ppl have talked about playing for 4+ years or more and finding nothing higher then a UM, myself personally played since the day LOD came out (and i know i had time off) and found 1vex and ist in the 4+ year combined playing, so u have to imagine about 50%+ of runewords are dupes, and the obvisous rares since classic, especially the good ol dual leech rings.... but before i get introuble at work...

short and to the point, the only thing i can say is get some type of petetion to go around and have all the ppl sign it, i can imagine most dupers arnt on fourms since they just make there own items and characters... to get some better securty, but on the same token, blizz wouldnt give 2 craps if everyone stopped play, thats just more realm space for WoW.... but this is all IMO so plz dont hate, just be creative

You might want to learn about this forum before you offer dupes here. We are a legit site. although you should know that: your profile says you joined in Dec 04. But your post count is such that you haven't hung around much. Let's play it this way: no dupes are offered for trade or for, as you say, leveling services. If you and Locke decide to come to that agreement, it is off of this site. You're new, and probably haven't read the Classic rules that are stickied to the top of this forum. Read them, and welcome to Classic. Profile noted.

I wasn't referring specifically to NL. No, that would be too easy since 90% of the more experienced players know the common ones and some of the uncommon ones. I was talking more about Ladder, and I'm sure that some of you who play on ESCCL have a slight idea of what dupes are flying around and who has them.

With all this $$$ and "megaresources" now, they should be making a proper investment with it, protecting their franchises and upgrading too. No excuses! It's been 2 full months now of this lag+dupe crap. Blizzard tends to take action only if whatever is going on is costing them money: the bots. Maphack was only something incidental, needed by the botters. Are they upgrading the servers to deal with the lag duping. Nope. Question is what are they doing? What really motivates them besides $$. These blanket statements like

"We are aware of the situation and categorically deny blah blah blah.... <TheBattleNetTeam>"

make it seems like they are out of touch with the day-do-day gameplayers. I know fixes need to be tested, hopefully thats the cause of the delay. There have been other duping episodes before, and this past summer there was either duping or heavy usage of the servers which Blizzard addressed with the Aug 1st patch that banned 30,000 botters. After a week the lag returned, it went away when the kiddies went back to school, which just leads me to believe they are scrimping on server costs.

Yeah, I've read the latest about what they were saying in the trade mags. It was covered in the Community Forum. It was at a London event for WoW (what else) and the guy in the suit said something like: "Now we havent forgotten about the other games, SC and Diablo. We hopefully will add to those franchises...and be back here in a few years...certainly SC within the next 10 years" One of the responders said something like "Whew! Only 3625 days to go, just like yesterday it seemed to be 4000..."

In the meantime, speaking of London, there will be HellGate London...
