View Full Version : The Wandazon Project

Alrighty.
So I had this brilliant idea to make a Wandazon after hearing so much about them.
Thus, on Thursday, January 18, 2007, at 8:57 PM, ItsMYBoomstick was born on USEast Softcore Ladder.
She has no experience at all with a wand yet...but that will change shortly.
I want her to do physical damage, possibly combined with lightning from Dream.
Other than that, my ideas are null...
I want her to reach the 7fpa breakpoint with a Lich Wand.
And I want her to be able to solo Hell Baal.
Any equipment ideas? I'm rather stuck on this.
ALSO::
If you happen to find a Lich wand with 250%+ED, 40IAS, Fool's mod, and 2os...let me know. ^^
I hope to make this a viable build someday, and possibly write a guide on more specific details.

The resource I normally use to check these things is down, but I'm reasonably sure that Wands and Staves are incapable of spawning with %ED, or any other damage boosting mods (other than elemental damage, of course). Besides, even if you COULD get enhanced damage mods, the damage on wands is pathetic- 20.5 average on a Lich Wand, which is about as much as a middling exceptional sword. Have you ever noticed anyone soloing Hell with a 250% ED Exceptional Sword? There's a reason why- the damage is just too pathetic. Even if the ED spawned (again, I don't think it does), that's 72 average damage per hit, and the Amazon has no innate skill-based ED (meaning you might be able to get 1000% off-weapon ED, tops, which would result in 792 physical damage, at the high end). I just don't think it's viable, although I'd love to be proven wrong.

The only way to get ed% on wand, except superior ones, is crafting a Power weapon. The formulla according Arreat Summit is as follows: Tir rune+ Perfect Sapphire+Any jewel+ Blunt weapon any quality. If you are lucky enough you can get mechanic mod on such - thus you will get +30-60%ed wand (2 socets).
Therefore the best ed% mod on wand (prefertably Ghost wand with base dmg 20-42) would be 160% (with dual Ohm's  ).
:badteeth:
P.S. I have another suggestions for really good mage-fighter weapon ->
simply found 3 soc 15% Dimensional shard (could be eth too) and make... FURY rune word in it! :flip: Imagine if such orb haves also + 40 life as automod, +3lighting mastery, +3.... / +3... Sorc only skills you will be the true god of War!

I think physical dmg will be close to impossible to attain good amounts of unless stacked up with crazy charms and jewels ofc... but what about a Pestilent Wand of Pestilence? Buzzing Wand of Incineration or something else nifty... and on switch you ofc have a Wand of Lower Resistance.
Umm... Good luck

Maybe the buzzing idea might be going somewhere...but also load up on lots of crushing blow maybe? Tiamat's for shield? Gonna be tough :(

Isn't Fury in three socket melee weapons? I don't think an orb counts as a melee weapon :P

Yeah, I was thinking about loading up on CB and Elemental damage...
Wands can spawn ethereal, right?
So if I find an Eth magic wand, and craft it, and it somehow magically gets 2 sockets and a load of other kickass elemental mods...that would work; I'd socket it with "OhmZod".

Hmmm, since its listed damage is delirevable by melee means..
Anyway, know the runes are dirty cheap, so why don't try it ?

Correct. Fury won't work in Orbs. In fact, I'm pretty sure that Venom is the only runeword that works in Orbs.

It is a sad, sad, sad, sad, sad day indeed when a Jah and Gul are considered "dirt cheap".

It is a sad, sad, sad, sad, sad day indeed when a Jah and Gul are considered "dirt cheap".
And it's much sadder when you see people valueing the Gul higher than the Jah... Not to speak of the recent sale of 30 perf amethysts at Europe ending up at 4 Hrs... There goes the last partially sane economy... :hide:

wow, runewizard 1.3.3 says fury can go into orbs..but orbs are SORC only weapons and i don't know thy that issue hasn't come up first.

I suppose you could hope for a Rare wand with:
Shocking (1-480 lightning dmg)
Condensing (170-240 fire dmg)
Mechanic's (2 sockets)
Lich Wand
of Quickness (if Wands can get this, else any IAS mod here)
of Piercing (ITD...)
of Storms (6-120 lightning dmg)
of any other useful prefix instead of Storms.
There you've got chunky elemental damage, 2 sockets for possibly Shaels, more elemental damage (Ral, Ort), or even Bers... if you're game enough to throw 2 hrs into it...

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I checked the weapon speed calculaor, and I'll need 105 IAS to reach the breakpoint.
40 from the wand (without sockets.)
15 from the helmet (Guillaume's with IAS jewel).
10 from the belt (Nosferatu's.)
I could then go ShaelShael on the wand, and use Atma's Scarab for the Amp.
Just some idea contemplation...
Psh, wandazon is too easy, make a melee wandamancer, then you will be pro.
uhhh
wow, runewizard 1.3.3 says fury can go into orbs..but orbs are SORC only weapons and i don't know thy that issue hasn't come up first.
Runewizard 1.3.3 is incorrect. Orbs are not considered melee weapons, so any runeword that says it works in a melee weapon WILL NOT work in an Orb. The only runewords that work in Orbs are ones that work in *ANY* type of weapon (not just specifically melee weapons, or just specifically missile weapons), and require 3 or fewer runes (since orbs never get more than 3 sockets). There is only one runeword that fits all of these requirements.
Venom is absolutely, positively the only runeword that will work in sorceress orbs.
Back on topic... I have only ever heard of one melee character that used a wand as its primary weapon to good effect. That character was a Smiter who used a ShaelShael Bone Wand with charges of Lifetap as his primary- and that only worked because he was getting his damage from his shield. By the same token, a Kicker could easily use a Wand. I also suspect that, if you got a good enough elemental damage wand, a Conviction Zealot could get by with one, too. I doubt that any Wandazon would be Hell-Viable.
If you *DO* try to make one, though, you absolutely must name her "AFishCalled". You can than introduce yourself as "AFishCalled: Wandazon."

I'd forsake the ED route, just as SSoG pointed out, even with lots of off weapon ED, your physical damage will be subpar. Wands can get wild amounts of elemental dmg, why not be on the look out for wands like this? I think the elemental dmg route will work better.

why would you make a wand zon.. whats the purpose of this? if you want a meleezon go with a sword or something, or better yet, a bowazon -.-

Because he wants to challenge himself. People who make builds like this have probably tried and got tired of most (if not all) cookie-cutter builds.
why would you make a wand zon.. whats the purpose of this? if you want a meleezon go with a sword or something, or better yet, a bowazon -.-
Its a huge challenge, and there have been some very successful versions of a wandazon.
Yes elemental damage is the most obvious route, as wands have the ability to spawn upwards of 400 damage in each elemental category. Since you aren't bound by fend/jab, you can max out Dodge/Avoid/Evade/Pierce, although I would rather go Inner Sight/Pierce/Blessed Aim merc with infinity.
A Wandazon is possibly the hardest of all amazon 'builds'. A Daggerzon uses thrusting weapon which doesn't slow her block, Axe/Sword/Mace Tankazons have powerful ED and runewords available, even Staffazons would be viable with a good runeword or possibly Ribcracker. Even a "Punchazon", doesn't have her block speed slowed, then going bare-handed + shield could be actually better using a Wand + shield, lol.
The Wandazon lacks most damage enhancing possibilities and will be plagued by the uber-slow blocking rate as well (wands are swinging weapons), so maybe you'll want some fast block rate.
Good luck on that one.

and this is WHY its a wandazon.
Hard Builds are FUN.
there most be something I'm missing, why would wands spawn with wild amounts of elemental damage. Can't a sword just spawn with the same affixes? And by this being a better source of elemental damage then the wand. Or is it just because nearly no other mods can spawn on a wand?
anyway, respect if you can make it work, I'm crossing my fingers, you'll need it.
Or is it just because nearly no other mods can spawn on a wand?
Bingo.

Hahah.
I don't like to necro threads, but I believe I found a nice wand:
Rune Bar
Grim Wand (dammit!)
5% CtC Level 3 Chain Lightning on Attack
Ignore Target Defense (nice.)
39 - 67 Fire Damage (not bad...)
1 - 271 Lightning Damage (no, not bad at all)
4 to Energy (bleh.)
Maybe with the influx of nonconformist builds, I'll join in.
Who knows, who knows...
Anyway...some questions of a 'how I should proceed' arose:
1) Should it be on the Realms, or on SP?
2) Should it be twinked, untwinked, or both?
3) ATMA or no ATMA? I barely play on SP...this wand was a stroke of luck. Should I be cheesy and mule it over?
4) I think I'll make my Mercenary an Iron Wolf.
5) Passivezon layout, save CS, I guess.
I think I'll start tonight...so I'll play on SP, untwinked, without ATMA. Not HC, as I'm not ready for that...but we'll see. Yes...we will.
I'll be playing on /players 8, no ifs-ands-or-buts about it...my stat distribution will be all Vitality.
Wish me luck...
***On Sunday, June 3rd, 2007, at 7:57:34 EST, Ally_Deathwhack was born.***
I guess the only thing I'll use ATMA for is to mule in the starting weapon: the starting wand of the Necromancer.
I hate to break it to you, but that Wand deals pretty pathetic damage, in the grand scheme of things. A plain old wand with nothing but a perfect "shocking" prefix would deal 33% more average elemental damage per hit.

Putting things in a retrospect...it's the only wand with SOME elemental damage I've found.
Yeah, I'm aware that it's pretty bad (I looked up the perfect wand...it wouldn't be half bad, actually) in comparison to the greatest wand...but it's one of the better wands that I've found. Something makes me doubt that I'll ever find that dream wand, so this one will have to suffice.
This sound like such a great challenge, I'm gonna give it a go on the Europe realm.
I quickly bought a 1-473 lightning damage wand to get me started. I want to get one with 40ias and two sockets. If I find such a wand or possibly a rare with even more mods, I'll BerBer it (or maybe BerShael depending on the ias on my gear) and combine with Gores and Guillaumes, it should be fun.
As for a shield, if I go the blocking way, I see three options:
BlackOak Luna
Reaches the 10-frame block bp without a shael and the 9-frame breakpoint with one. Has pretty nice mods but no resists. The +dex subsitutes the increased chance of blocking and even gives a little ar.
Mosers blessed circle
Only reaches the 11 frame breakpoint without shaels, but can reach the 10frame breakpoint with one shael and 9frame breakpoint with 2 shaels. Offers some resists, but not much else.
Stormshield
Old reliable. Great mods, but even with a shael, you'll still be stuck at the 10frame breakpoint. Still, if I can manage with a 10frame block, this seems like the way to go. It does require a lot of strength though and I can't even hel it.
What do you all think? Or should I just forget about blocking altogether and slap on a dream shield or something?
If you want a fast shield with good block why not Whistan's? It doesn't have any other useful mods, but it saves you a ton of stat points and together with Guillaume's you even get a small extra life bonus.

SSoG: By the way, sorry. I wanted to give her a...well, name...not...I don't know what to call it. AFishCalled isn't something I can happily address her as...I mean, really. I can't go about saying "and AFishCalled finally defeated xxx"...it sounds much better with a proper name. =P
Maybe for my next project...but maybe not, I don't know.
Ava: Twinked? That sounds interesting...let me know how it goes. Chaosing with a wandazon, eh...
Sounds interesting. I say go for an Elemental/CB based build...I'd vote for the Stormshield, personally.
Meanwhile, I'm playing on /players 8 SP untwinked...by the way, I begun that. I suppose that I'll elaborate in the beginning (which superdave, much to my dismay, didn't do...maybe because at the time it was a new idea, but meh) as well as throughout, in great detail (sometimes more than necessary.)
I don't have much time on my hands at the moment (playing that whole 'loose cannon semi-ideal student with a liking towards sharp stuff, literature, and pyrotechnics and a strange addiction to Diablo II' role is time consuming!)
I'll also be using superdave as my role model/deity/God...if he could do it, on HC nonetheless, this should be simple...right? Right?
...right?
Regardless, the curtain opens...
The first thing I did was to ditch that stupid javelin, and equip my trusty stick (http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/6848/ditchingthejavelinuf7.jpg).
I stepped outside the Blood Moor...it was really as simple as any other character beginning the game. Just walking around, smacking Fallen with a big round stick instead of a Javelin (http://img512.imageshack.us/my.php?image=startingtokillob1.jpg). The first thing I discovered was that, as mentioned earlier by someone, the block rate of the Wandazon was extremely annoying: it impeded my killing speed and led to a general annoyance, especially with three Fallen hitting you at a time (http://img113.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gettingmobbedaf2.jpg).
If three Fallen were enough to cause such a disruption, I could only begin to fathom what more would do: I think my endgame plan will be to go through with a very low blocking shield, just for the sake of resistance.
Anyway, after traversing a bit of the Blood Moor, leveling up, collecting some gold, et cetera, I decided to finally enter the Den (http://img113.imageshack.us/my.php?image=enterthedente2.jpg). At first sight, the beasties (http://img113.imageshack.us/my.php?image=beastiestu8.jpg)were just about as simple as their comrades outside the Den...until, of course, I stumbled upon a large pack of Fallen. I didn't want them to surround me, or my horrendous block rate would lead to near certain death. I herded 'em up a bit...so here you can see the parade of Fallen following me around (http://img482.imageshack.us/my.php?image=paradeoffallenzk9.jpg) (they idolize me!). With them safely behind me, I could begin to whack away at the three surrounding Shaman (http://img512.imageshack.us/my.php?image=whackingawayatshamansea0.jpg), and once they were dead, pick off the rest of them one by one (http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/1022/onebyoneca0.jpg) due to their annoying (albeit sometimes a lifesaver) AI behavior.
The rest of the Den was really clockwork, save a town break, in which Akara gives me a godsend (http://img485.imageshack.us/img485/8866/agodsendsn0.jpg)...come level seven, and it will be a fun little stick (http://img482.imageshack.us/img482/1378/shinyqy0.jpg). There's the occasional Gargantuan Beast (http://img517.imageshack.us/my.php?image=thesetakeforevertokillio4.jpg), which takes longer to kill than I'm used to (but something tells me that I'm gonna have to get used to it very soon).
Alright...now I'm down to Corpsefire and his pack (http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/7467/corspefirespackbh3.jpg). Approaching them was easy enough...zombie AI's don't chase upon sight, for the most part; they only attack when provoked...I took advantage of this, and lured them one by one away (http://img107.imageshack.us/my.php?image=luringyd8.jpg), managing to very easily beat them to death without my shield getting in the way. Yeah, I could have taken the shield off...but that ruins the fun. Besides, after a couple of levels, my block rate will be diminished enough.
After a bit of luring and whacking, I was finally down to Corpsefire (http://img166.imageshack.us/my.php?image=eventuallykc2.jpg), who really was cake...the slow was annoying, sure, but I could take him with ease. His drops were a Buckler of Thorns and Leather Armor of Self Repair.
I kept the Buckler, why not, but decided to ditch the stupid Armor. I also bought myself some normal/superior/Magic gear during the pit stop after Corpsefire. Returning to the Den, I realized that there were still a bit of monsters left, as I hadn't gotten the quest notification yet. I checked the slight area I left unexplored near the beginning...and bingo, a rather large pack of creatures (http://img482.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lastbunchfw3.jpg). The way they were situated was annoying; I couldn't kill as fast as the Shamans revived, and a head-on assault would prove futile due to the narrowness of the passage. I decided to lure a few out, and go around (http://img482.imageshack.us/my.php?image=goingaroundgl9.jpg), where I had a small welcoming committee, but nothing to fear. I picked off the remaining Shamans, and went back to kill the Fallen I lured away...and boom, quest completed.
That was the easy part...the Fallen provided no challenge whatsoever, other than annoyance. I finished clearing the Moor, and grabbed the Cold Plains Waypoint, near where I met my first real challenge (http://img365.imageshack.us/my.php?image=FirstChallenge.jpg): a Bosspack of Gargantuan Beasts, the leader being Conviction Enchanted. Luckily, there was no dealer of elemental damage nearby (Fallen Shaman, another Bosspack, etc...), and I could use my Chipped Topaz'd wand, but the Conviction took a big chunk out of my defense. It became that just about every hit actually connected with me, save the very few that I dodged.
I made quick use of a nearby skill shrine (http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/4874/SkillShrine.jpg), and looked for a place to deal with the Beasts more easily: by now, my block rate was a thing to worry less about, but being surrounded by giant beasts damaging enough to put me into hit recovery lock became the new prime worry.
I made use of the terrain, and the sinkholes of Act I: due to the slow, stupid nature of the AI of the creature, I was able to use the side of one as a choke point (http://img365.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ChokePoint.jpg), and effectively fight them one by one until the others went either around it or around the entire hole. This continued for quite a while (http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/9577/MoreChokePoints.jpg), all around the puddle (http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/1/ChokeMore.jpg), as the Gargantuan Beasts' HP recovery slowed me down considerably.
Eventually, it came to the point where I was fed up with taking so long to get one down and it going back up, I decided to try to tank them until I could hopefully kill it: this proved futile, as I was about to be surrounded, and had to make a quick retreat (http://img365.imageshack.us/my.php?image=RunningAway.jpg) for a bit...notice the corpse of one to the left; that was the first of quite a few.
Well, I ran back up (http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/1787/Overshadowed.jpg) to the choke point to do some more dancing...and eventually, I narrowed it down to a tankable two (http://img365.imageshack.us/my.php?image=AfterABit.jpg).
And then, I had to leave...real life doesn't do the Diablo world much good.
Blood Raven is coming up next. She might prove a bit harder than the idiotic Gargantuan Beasts...but, as the case with superdave, it should speed up once I get my mercenary out of nonexistence. At the moment, this stuff that I'm dealing with is easy...but I reckon Duriel will be quite the annoyance, to say the least.
EDIT: Looks like I have some time to edit...Blood Raven was ridiculously easy.
The Corrupted Rogues were really...well, cake. Bishibosh was a joke. The enemies could barely hit me, and when they did, it barely made a dent onto my blood ball (much unlike the Gargantuan Beasts of before.)
The Hungry Dead and Skeletons were also pretty easy, just a little bit more buffed up than the other creatures that Ally has met so far...Blood Raven was hilarious. At first, it was annoying, because she kept chilling me (http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/1378/Chilled.jpg) and summoning Hungry Dead...I had to keep retreating while luring the Hungry Dead away so I could get clear shots at her.
And then...this (http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/5800/WhatsThis.jpg) happened. Notice Blood Raven's position, and the amount of monsters. From a screenshot, it looks normal...
Check again. (http://img389.imageshack.us/my.php?image=Hmmm.jpg)
...and again. (http://img389.imageshack.us/my.php?image=HangingAround.jpg)
Now watch as I mock Blood Raven running in place (http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/3892/Mockery.jpg)! Get your exercise...you'll need it for Nightmare and Hell.
I'm still actually laughing at this (http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/69/MoreMockery.jpg).
...I finally decided to take a whack (http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/4504/TakingAWhack.jpg).
She's almost dead now (http://img389.imageshack.us/my.php?image=AlmostThere.jpg)...you can guess how this ended.
SSoG: By the way, sorry. I wanted to give her a...well, name...not...I don't know what to call it. AFishCalled isn't something I can happily address her as...I mean, really. I can't go about saying "and AFishCalled finally defeated xxx"...it sounds much better with a proper name. =P

You could always call her "Wanda" for short. That's okay, though... since you didn't use the name, I might just register and use it myself.
Yes, I'm playing twinked, but that won't be until much later when I can use the good items.
A whitstans guard is an interesting choice. It has 10% less fbr than a blackoak, but it can hit the same (56%fbr) breakpoint. But blackoak gives a lot of dex and life. Doesn't that mean more than the increased chance of blocking on Whitstans seeing as dex also raises your ar?
One vote for stormshield. I'm just having a problem with the big strength requirement. I was actually hoping to keep strength at base. But still, if it's the best way to go...
~~
My first venture with Alyson; my Wandazon, was pretty similar to MinionOfBoredom's. I used she same kind of wand with a topaz in it (mine is a normal socketed one), and the only thing that gave me any problems was a large pack with two uniques; one Gargantuan Beast and one Shaman. A lot of running around, but eventually I was able to kill them.

A level 80 amazon needs 150*80/45 = 282 dex for max block with a Blackoak. Level 80 also means +40 dex (making the real dex requirement 242) and +100 life. With a Whistan's Guard a level 80 amazon needs 150*80/92 + 15 = 146 dex.
Therefor the difference in dex required is 242-146 = 96 dex meaning a difference in life of 96*3 - 100 = 188 life in favour of Whistan's (+35 when also using Guillaumes). The difference in AR is (282-146)*5 = 680 base AR.
Note though, that are a few easy solutions to get lots of AR with gear.
Thanks stephan. You did what I was obviously too lazy to do.
188 base life is far too much to ignore (and the life from Blackoak is not bo-able). The ar and the other mods (weaken, cold absorb) aren't worth that much. It looks like Blackoak is out.
I suddenly feel like an idiot for throwing away that Whitstans I found last night. :undecided:

So I just rescued Cain...it's not exactly hard, yet, considering it's still A1 Normal. I'm pressed for time nowadays (what soon-to-be-graduating eighth grader isn't pressed for time?), so I'm not gonna bother posting any screenies...none are all that interesting, anyway...this is the easy part of the game, so I think.
I can envision myself having quite a bit of trouble with Andy and Durry, the latter especially.
Small correction on the name, it's Ally_Deathsmack.
