hi... I'm having a kind flashback here :D

is it just me, or was there some kind of patch that lasted only 1 week long, where the game was so **EDITED** hard? My whirlwind barb had no cash to repair, everyone were dueling for cash... bad, bad, bad!

I remember succeding killing diablo in a 8 players game, I was lvl86 and lowest char in the game. It took us 1 hour...

I think this was the patch 1.04, but I'm not sure whether I'm psychoid or not, so please tell me if you remember something like this!

P.S.: I checked in b.net patch changes notes and found nothing about that!

It was the expansion patch

1.08

I believe it was actually 1.07. 1.07 was short-lived. 1.08 lasted a couple months.

Within the Diablo 2 community the expansion caused some controversy when Blizzard patched the original game with a patch that made Nightmare and Hell difficulties particularly harder than before; some players felt that Blizzard was effectively forcing them to upgrade to the expansion in order to find the items and gain the abilities necessary to deal with the new challengesTemplate:FACT (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:FACT&action=edit). The controversy was mentioned in nearly every review of Lord of Destruction at the time[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources)].
Took me some reading to find that info

Thanks for the info.
If anyone does find a link to this patch, I'll be eager to download it and to play via TCP/IP with peepz just to see how hard it gets!

iirc the patches can easily be dled from blizzards technical support site (http://www.blizzard.com/support/), probably, atleast the newer ones can... Atm it seems down however, probably because all the "game laggs need helpz!!!1!one1!!" they recieve :wink2:

Shouldn't be hard to seach for it, just google/Yahoo/whatever and you'll get lots of hits, some might however not be safe. But as long as you keep your eyes open, you'll probably find a good one.

P.S.: v1.07 still can't be downloaded from there, but I don't know if the others are working. Well, I deleted the game, but if ones get to know if the v1.08 is the one that turns the game hard... please leave us a message!

Might be easier to find a v1.07 LoD disc.

That patch was somewhere between March and May of 2001, and it really showed what bizarre arbitrary decisions Blizzard can make. Only because there was such a universal uproar, even in trade magazines, did Blizzard recant the changes.

Why was it so hard? Because Diablo2 was becoming easy, people had mastered the skill combo's to kill off the whole screen in a few seconds. The barb mastery 2x damage bug had given them absurd killing power with the whirlwind. Zon Multishot was too easy. So they really had to make the game harder. LoD was coming out soon and there would be all sorts of glory items that would make the game too easy. Blizzard planned to boost the hitpoints by several fold and then add a 50% global physical resistance to the monsters. That would force melee chars to get elemental damage - and LoD sure had lots of that - either on items or using vengence / berserk / elemental arrows. Crushing Blow was nerfed to a fraction of its stated effectiveness.

They are right in the post above: it would force people to get the expansion. But it also solved the problem of the easiness of the game. Some people at the 'board room meeting' probably mentioned that it was too big a step, but they were squelched. Blizzard doesnt like small changes, that doesnt affect the 'buzz' on a game. The patch hit without warning and, the thread poster is right, it took a long time to get to kill diablo. Players were mostly furious, some were happy. The angry ones felt they needed 1.08 LoD equipment to get thru 1.07 and this forced the patch 1.07 to be recanted.

How did Blizzard make such a stupid mistake? They had done tons of testing on LoD. I'll bet they did zero testing with that 1.07 patch on classic chars. The majority of decision makers had lost day-to-day contact with the players. They disrespected them with that patch. Not surprisingly, they did the same crap again to classic in the completely untested 1.10 patch....tested very thoroughly for LoD, not a stitch on classic. And the 'board room suits' could have cared less about us and our reaction, because this time around we were only 5-10% of the diablo2 market...

And that ends tonite's Fairy Tale. Sleep well kiddies...

Dont you just hate it when someone changes the rules, spend ages building up a character like my lv 84 multi-shot zon in the days when getting into the 80's was difficult (or at least it seemed to me to be). Could clear cs solo in 8ppl game in a few minutes. Then they patch it and cant kill one flayer in a 1 player game.

Think they nerfed hammerdins on one patch so that concentration didnt improve the damage but ppl got so upset they put it back on (or was it that it was a mistake that they nerfed it and just corrected it).

Yes, it happened. It was around October 2000, a few months after the game came out that the bh-conc link was discovered. It wasnt supposed to happen, but they didnt take over the game. So Blizzard bided its time and finally nerfed that skill combo for about a week. It could have been 1.07, it was around that time. Alot of ppl complained since about 1/3 of pallys had adopted that build. The makers of the game had thought hammers were "too cheesy" for pallys.

Imagine the dismay then, on Oct 28th 2003, when they added all those synergies to the hammers. Clearly, the team that had brought us this game had been largely swept away. It's not even a lvl 30 skill! Conc aura isnt a lvl 30 skill!
