key configuration

I set all of the skills to keys on the keyboard but when I press them nothing happens. There's no result for pressing any of the function keys either.

On another note, is it possible to remove gems and such from socketed items?

Spells and skills are not binded to key you assign them. Those keys are shortcuts for your spells and skills for either your right or left mouse button (by default).

Also to removo gems/runes/jewels from an item put them in horadric cube with a scroll of toen portal and a Hel rune. Whatever was inside the items dissapear and all bonus it granted to the item is also taken off.
