This happens mainly on Expansion due to there being a larger population. The reason why items "pop" is because they are duped. some fancy high-tech mumbo jumbo takes place and it disappears unless you "perm" them. If my memory serves me correctly, you can perm duped items by having them in your inventory with your inventory open for like 15 minutes. Or, enter a trade screen then immediately exit the trade and exit the game for a "temp perm." I have had this happen to me many times with soj's, runes, and other high priced items.

Completly untrue. You can't perm duped items. If it's a dupe it will disappear at some point in time. Could be tomorrow, could be in a year, but it will disappear. Use the search function here and you will see this has been discussed many times and most will say that there is no way to "perm" something.

If you're talking about "perming" for long term, then yes, it's impossible. However, you can "perm" it for short term, and I think it has something to do with having it in the trade window. Also, you can lose a dupe if two of the same duped item are in the same game, but I don't know if this holds true or not. If you forget either of these, then kiss the dupe goodbye.

Of course, if it's a SoJ, there's always the possibility of socking an item to avoid any of this, which would probably be the smartest idea. Then again, there is no real way of telling apart dupes from legits.

arent duped sojs the ones with no level req? i always thought so... or are they just prepatched? i see more of those around then the level 29 req ones. and i was told that too.

Prepatched SoJ's are likely to poof aswell :)

Only they have more...prestige :)

The sojs I traded for never seemed to poof unless I just sat it in the inventory for a while. I guess it could have been by luck... Also, to not have runes poof, I just threw them into a runeword right after I got them.

Unless this has changed since 1.09, most prepatch SoJs are safe, because Blizzard didn't start putting IDs on items until around when LoD came out (maybe a couple of patches before). Dupes are checked for by comparing the IDs of the items... the IDs should be unique, so if two items in a game have the same ID, then at least one of them is a dupe.

It is possible that they have gone through and assigned IDs to old items, in which case they will poof only if they have been duped since they got an ID... if they were duped way back in the early patches, then there is no way for that to be detected. This applies to the old duped rares as well.

This is why it's so much nicer to play on ladder, since all items there have IDs...

Personally, I don't get why dupes only poof if two of them are in the same game... It's easy (though computationally expensive) for Blizzard to search all of the items in a realm and delete the dupes, whether the character is logged in or not. But I guess it's not high on their priority list.

They do that every now and then, the big ruststorm.
When two id's in a game are found to be the same, you can count on there being more of that ID. So I think the continual 'small' ruststorm is just what you describe, 2 ID's the same in the game, delete both and write down the id for the big ruststorm. Then, at the big ruststorm, just search for those ID's collected by the small ruststorm.
Ladder isn't dupefree.
Using runes in a runeword probably won't stop them from going poof, try a search for 'incomplete runewords due to a poofed rune' on this forum.
Me, I haven't seen incomplete runewords, or complete ones for that matter, so I can't confirm any of this by experience, just by what is described on these forums.

The only way to be sure a duped soj will not "poof" ids to use it to socket something....same with hrs, make a runeword with them and they will never go away

I thought that it was only in Diablo 1 when 2 duped items in the same game were destroyed. Could be wrong, though.

They generally are.

if you can see an item ID then you are a cheater and you deserve to have all your dupes vanish and your account/cd key banned.
