So I'm making a hydra sorc, and she'll be using Tal's set. But I just recalled reading somewere that the game considers Hydra to be a minion. is this true? if so -fire resist wouldn't work, right?

Hydra is a hardcoded exception to the minion rule. People kept complaining that Hydra didn't work with +% Fire Skill Damage (such as from Fire Mastery), so Blizzard went in and changed Hydra so that it did. I think they set up Hydra so it works with -% Fire Resistance at the same time, but I'm not certain about that one.
So would casting hydra's with your + to skills setup and then switching to and Obedience or some other weapon/shield combo with -fire res work?

It should.
