View Full Version : KTA-16, Funny Builds, session 1
So Hi All,
Yesterday evening at 19:30 sharp i entered channel KTA to find Waflob already waiting. we had a nice chat, and after about 10 minuts we decided to make the game and start having fun.
Waflob plays a doublehanded barbarian, eventualy going to use double wands. I myselve am a charger, and i have already found that aldough he is tons of fun he requires much practice to make him work... and not to forget... MANA. 9 mana a charge, a mana bulb of 3x and no mana steal or regeneration really sucks!
anyway, we started in act 1, and since might is a synergy of charge, i inmediately started pumping it, soon making the 2 of us fantasticly overpowered. all quests were done and just before Andariel we both turned lvl 12 and the first charges were unleased upon Andariel. and even dough she cant be knocked back, each charge toke a nice big chunk of her life, and soon enough she died, leaving me a fancy pair of shoes.
we then entered act 2 and changed our girl mercs for those nice and sturdy act 2 fellows..... which kept on dying all the time! we did kill radament with ease dough (charge now does well over 200 max dmg), and while Waflob kept all those little buggers busy, i toke rada for the ride of his life (aldough it was short).
we thought this would be a nice moment to stop, so other players could catch up easy. so when i left the game i noticed someone standing in our KTA channel. it turned out to be DimmuBorgir (i hope i got his name right) and we had a very nice chat. in the end he decided he is going to join us from next monday onwards. so with another fellow (cant get his name in my mind now :embarassed: ) joining us in januari, we will have 4 players at least.
that means there is still place for some more players who have a feeling to go on an untwinked adventure with a friendly and fun group. if you feel like it, please respond to this (and dont forget to read the other thread with all the playing details on this forum)
cya all next week
Tika
Summed it up well.
Maybe we were a bit over-confident, due to the might aura etc, but there were a few times when we had to reatreat and heal up, even a couple if NDEs. Was still fun though ... Anyone know when the elemental damage wands start becoming available ?
Only wierd part was trying to get a decent level offensive merc in act 2. Initially, there was only a lvl 10, which wasn't much use for a lvl 13 char - we can do better !
Strange this was, every time I looked to see if a better lvl merc was available, there were no offensive mercs to be had. None whatsoever !!!
Never mind though - I created a game this morning and got a nice lvl 13 offensive merc for next week.
Also, have they (Blizz) increased the time needed for perming a char ?? Despite over 2 hours play, he will still expire in 10 days time. I'm confused ...
See you next week, if not before
DelBoy
Hey guys. Seems like an interesting adventure you got going on here and since i live in europe i though why not join in?
The time would be fine for me and i could rock out every week as im not busy doing anything on monday evenings. So the build would be a fire claws druid perhaps? Or is it too cookie cutter? In any case i really would enjoy playing untwinked and in a nice friendly party which is quite uncommon now with all the tppkers :(
hi zrk - welcome to kta !
just to be 100% sure, this is EuHCL LoD - you seem to be into classic, hence the question ...
Pick any build that you find fun to play. I'm not 100% sure but I think someone will be playing a shifter druid as well, but not a hot paws.
So far, we have a charger pally, frenzy barb and possibly the above mentioned druid. All tppk free :-)
DelBoy
Hi zrk
very welcome indeed, but please DO make sure you are talking same realm (that should be ok) and version of the game.
i dont believe i have ever seen a fireclawer in action and if you think it will be fun then go for it. if we have 2 druids that would be 2 different sage's as well... and that can never be a bad thing.
can you manage to get a caracter up to the point in the game where we finished last time?
cya around
Yep i am playing 1.11 expansion Euhcl. Used to play classic but right now im playin expansion. ill start my druid up then, to level 13.

'Sup guys, and yeah you got my name right. The Drummer build sounds awesome, definitely something I haven't seen before. I'm still trying to decide on a build to use... If I decide to use a "wierd" build, it will be hard to get him to Act II.
I've got a Rabies wolf going right now named Tyrant, the character I was on when we had our chat, he's doing suprisingly well. Very safe and very damaging character, just bite one monster and you've got the biggest area of effect attack in the entire game potentially. Plus you can never get rid of it, ever, until it wears off.
But Tyrant is now in Act III, and I'm not sure about making the same build twice, so I probably won't make a Rabies Wolf.
My main drawback is getting rid of my Softcore thinking. I can't come up with a build that isn't dependant upon certain equipment. Any suggestions?
I had a fire claws druid in a previous kta (KTA-HotPaws), but I don't think Tika was in that one. Works enormously well against anything non fire immune. We play non-twinked, but between sessions, I tried out a 110 ias phase blade. All I can saw is 'wow ...' - Hitting at 4 frames, doing over 10k per hit - major damage (apart from those pesky fire immunes, who just stand there laughing)
As for builds that don't need specific gear, there are many, but they tend to be those common builds, such as lite trapper, skelliemancer etc.
Here's an idea - what about a ranger ? If we're having a fireclaws build, then that's thge fire damage well taken care of. A ranger paladin, using a bow with either cold or lite aura (depending on the situation) would add cold/lite damage, as well as giving you a build that tends to stay out of harms way. IM isn't a problem, as you're not melee and you don't need any mana. You don't need mega equipment, just a reasonably fast bow (rogues bow is fine !). The physical damage is irrelevant, as your main source of damage is the added elemental. I've played these and they're fun. Just a thought ...
DelBoy
@zrk: happy to hear that, welcome to the party!
@both: we have the habbit of naming our caracter with a KTA tag. for example, my charger is named KTA-YellowBelly. it would be great if you 2 could do the same.
@Dimmu borgir: about choosing a caracter. anything that is skillbased will work. things that come to mind that are funny and will work are a poisonmancer with plenty of curses.a phoenixstriker, a warcrybarb (dual spirits anyone?) moost sorc types (just pick a funny/strange build), a magemancer or what waflob said... a ranger (you can even make it with both licht and cold aura's since you dont need many skillpoints for other things)
good luck choosing
Tika
what waflob said... a ranger (you can even make it with both licht and cold aura's since you dont need many skillpoints for other things)
That's what I meant - maybe it didn't come across too clearly.
DelBoy
Heya, I'm the guy joining the group in January. I'm now thinking about which build to start, Tika, which aura will your Paladin be running?

I think I'm gonna build an old melee Assassin I came up with a while back. But I'm unsure which path to take with her, since I have two variants...
The main build is basically a kicker. I max DTalon, and get a point in DFlight for battle movement. I ALWAYS play dual claw.
For self support, I have two options:
The "I will never die" option:
20 Fade
20 Cloak of Shadows
20 Claw Mastery
20 Weapon Block
The "I kill everything" option:
20 Burst of Speed
20 Claw Mastery
20 Venom
20 Blade Shield
I love both of them for their own reasons, but I'm not sure which one to use. Since its Hardcore the "I will never die" option seems like the best idea, but I love being able to lay waste to my enemies... I can't decide.
In case anyone's wondering, Venom applies to both kicks and Blade Shield. :D

Edit:GRR i just read the other Kta post and the time is no good for me as well >< You guys post are enticeing me ^^. Have fun ill be reading.
Heya Nikech! man... sorry i forgot your name, but welcome once again!
about my main aura... i havent decided that 1 yet. for the time being i will use might, and max that, since it is a synergy to charge anyways. i have about 11 points in might now and the rest in charge. i am maxxing those 2 first, using might in the meantime, and only then deciding what i or the group needs moost. this could be cold or light aura, but those would need a synergy to do any acceptable dmg, preventing me to max vigor (the other synergy to charge). other options are going fana for maximum physical dmg as wel as some speed to use if i would like to zeal on the side or concentration which is slightly less dmg for me, but much more party friendly. if things realy are going bad for the group i guess i could even pick conviction and max that for way lower defence and resists. at the moment my preference would go to concentration, for both good max dmg and party friendlyness. suggestions are welcome dough, and i wont be deciding anything before lvl 40ish anyways.
@Dimmu Borgir: since it is untwinked AND hc, i would tend to think that fade is the best choise... true .. speed is VERY cool... but you cant kill much if you are dead :-(
about the other skills... as for weapon block... is maxxing it really needed? the last 10 points seem to net you just 7% chance to block. and the same might go for cloak of shadows... and for blade shield.
you could get like 80% of the revenus for those skills with maybe just 20% of the skillpoints, specialy if you get a few +skills (and that shouldnt be a problem, +1 from barb cry, a +3 shadow skills amulet, and some +skills on claws (maybe only for the prebuff on switch?)... a total of +6 or 7 to shadow skills seems a piece of cake.
furthermore i havent heard you about a shadow of any kind, and i find them very usefull, not to mention strong when maxxed. also mindblast surely deserves mention.
maybe a skill plan a bit like this is possible? (assuming +5 to shadow and +1 to all (so +6 total to shadow skills))
20 claw mastery
20 venom
20 some of the shadows
9 blade shield (its not the dmg here that helps, its venom that kills, only the duration is important.. right?)
5 fade (is the 10 or so resist all and that little bit of pys resist worht 15 points?)
4 cloak of shadows
4 weapon block
1 mindblast
@Lord Penguin:
we dont tend to do actual item finding, aldough some baalruns to lvl a bit more before taking on the next challange are a must now and then. also some people tend to individualy hunt for some items outside of the mondayevening run, which is fine with us. actualy our only motto is to have fun, everyone does what it takes so if that means go finding some better items... so be it. are you interested in joining the KTA group or just in trying to find some items with a group?
greetings all!
No problem Tikadea, and thanks for the warm welcome! I just started KTA-dePayens, my templar-wannabe pally(FOHer). I'll be maxing conviction, so you're free to run something else.

I thought you didn't want cookie cutters? So... why are you giving me cookie cutter Sin tips? <_<;;
I'll probably go with a mixture of both. Invest in Fade, Blade Shield, and Weapon Block a bit, and some Venom.
Quick question, does the added chance of Critical Strike on Claw Mastery apply when you're using kicks? Does anything on Claw Mastery apply to kicks? 'Cause if not I might do away with that skill altogether.
I won't be using a Shadow because, well I don't know. I know they're great minions but I like playing "solo". Coincidentally I almost never use a merc, either, or any summon characters.
I'll be maxing conviction, so you're free to run something else.
Sounds great, especially for the barb with lots of elemental damage wands.
DelBoy
ps - I've got some screenshots from the last kta, shpwing exactly what a real pain in the proverbials CoS can be (I think it was CoS). I'll get them up and linked in a day or so.
Nikech... convivtion... that would be great, that would increase the party massively.
and... a FOHer with double spirits seems like a rather nice idea!
Dimmu Borgir:what are those kicks you keep talking about? i see no kick skills in your skillplan whatsoever? i was under the impression that you were going to be using a claw attack, and the plain and simple basic attack at that. i guess i misunderstood somthing?
Dimmu Borgir
07-12-2006, 18:05
I already said that in my first post, yeah. I'll be maxing DTalon and putting a point in DFlight. The skillsets I postes were just the extra stuff I would be using to support myself.
Dimmu Borgir
08-12-2006, 06:46
Graagh, it won't let me edit a post if it gets old... sorry for the double post. I'm changing my build a bit, going to incorporate Tiger Strike in combination with DFlight, along with the primary DTalon.
To allow for this new skill I'm probably going to get rid of either Venom or Blade Shield... or just take some points out of both so I can keep both there as active support.
is maxing blade shield usefull for anything else then the londer duration?
anyhow.. i like your plan!

Probably not. But it looks cool, and I don't want to have to keep casting it. :D
so here a little update on our team. since many new members applied i thought it would be a good thing to list who is in, and who plays what!
so here goes:
Waflob: drummer barb (double swinging staves)
Deci: either a holyshock pala or a druid summoner
Skhytte: bow using enchantress (he told me that in game)
Nikech: FoH paly with conviction
Dimmu Borgir: kicker assa
Millenium Falcon: either sniper zon or druid summoner
ZRK: fire claws druid
Tikadea: Charger paly
that means we are full now, and cannot take any more applies.
also Deci and Millennium... make sure you dont use the exact same build please :wink3:
for all: please try to be ready with your caracter for comming monday, reaching about lvl 14 and being in act 2 having killed radament if you can!
Tika
p.s. already looking forward to monday!

I've decided to make Paladin Cleric, but I can still change if you guys think it's too close to Nikech's FoHer
See you all on monday!

I don't think your cleric will be much like my templar, since I'll only be focusing on the lightning damage.
BTW, the fireclaws bear and tesladin will be rocking once I get my conviction, can't wait to see that.
I've got some screenshots from the last kta, showing exactly what a real pain in the proverbials CoS can be (I think it was CoS). I'll get them up and linked in a day or so.
Got them up - 2 with and 2 without. The time difference if only a few seconds between them, so hopefully the effects are easy to see.
This is probably nothing new, but does illustrate the point.
without (http://www.geocities.com/ce_rw/screens/without1.jpg), and then with (http://www.geocities.com/ce_rw/screens/with1.jpg)
another without (http://www.geocities.com/ce_rw/screens/without2.jpg), and with (http://www.geocities.com/ce_rw/screens/with2.jpg)
Spot the difference ? This is the main reason why I tend to prefer playing without CoS. Anyone else 'suffer' from this ?

ps - glad to see some additional interest - looking forward to the next session :)

Btw have you turned of blended shadows or do you play without gfx acceleration or something? At least for me the CoS doesn't make those squares?

Sorry for the double post, but the edit timer went off... (edit: no it didn't, I wasn't logged in :duh: )
Just a little progress report. Just got my KTA-Saladin to act 2 and finished Radament with my divine bolt. I'm lvl 16 now :lipsrsealed:, I think it's because I mostly soloe'd through act 1 and killed countess twice. Got a nice Ral rune from her, I think it will come handy.
Also got a very nice rare crystal sword someone sold to the store. I would've shopped for +x to lightning resist scepter and 2 socket breastplate but bnet wouldn't let me connect anymore, too much lag.
Also popped in a cow game and got a pair of glewclaw's gloves, tho I really don't need them (Tikadea?). Tomorrow I'll get a better merc and try to buy the scepter and perhaps shop for the breastplate so I won't have to later.
Can't wait for monday :prop:
Both Skhytte and I are now lvl 15 and have completed radament. She is enchantress as in mentioned before and I decided to take ranger with zeal approach. Waiting for monday to see whole team in action, going to be interesting to see how maggot lair goes.. most likely not a problem with lightning resis aura. :p

Quick question, I already made my Sin and named her Arcueid... and I'm already working on her. So, do you guys mind that she doesn't have KTA in her name?
Concerning CoS, I probably won't be investing in it so no need to worry.
Millennium Falcon
10-12-2006, 08:48
Heh... I don't mind
And about CoS, don't be too affraid to use it, even at one point. That thing can save some lives in tough situations :wink3:
Tikadea, i just wanted to point out that i think fanaticism would be more useful for the party than concentration, even though its damage bonus is smaller. Its increased attack speed is really useful for builds like drummer, fireclaws bear, bow enchantress, etc.
Cant wait for monday to arrive
ZRK: is the ias given to the rest of the party as well then? if that is the case i will certainly prefer fana over conc... since the extra AR aint a bad thing either AND it does give that little extra dmg to me as well.
i always thought the ias wasnt shared... please correct me!
Wordplay: i didnt forget about you, but in your last poosts you were so unclear and unpositive about you taking up this round of KTA that i did not think it would be safe for others who are interested to join to keep that spot untaken. if you Do decide however to join, we would be with a total of 9, which doesnt seem like a huge problem since it rarely occurs that everyone is present.
Dimmu, the naming is no problem to me, just decide for yourselve if you find it important enough to change.
Millennium: what aura will you be running then?
btw... i did read some poost about prayer... and combining it with insight. if i am right it seems to work quite well. anyone knows something of this? it was someway of getting huge replenish life by making use of multiple aura's and prayer or so.
about CoS.... please dont... ok?
i simply like this game so much more when i can see everything.
and about being lvl 16... that hardly aint a problem... is it? all in all it will be impossible to be exactly the same lvl for all, but as long as the difference is small who cares?

I'm maxin prayer, holy bolt, blessed hammer (synergy for bolt), and FoH (synergy for bolt and also my damage against non-undead  )
I'm putting one point into meditation and salvation, of redemption I'm not sure yet, as I doubt I'll face that much mana problems with meditation, and I think Nikech might need those corpses more than I, as lvl 20 bolt needs only 3.1 mana per cast
And yes, with lvl 20 prayer it will heal ~25 hp's every 2 seconds, and the effect will be on even if I use meditation , also Nikech's conviction will be a huge damage boost for my lesser FoH.
I will use meditation as my main aura, and it will also heal the 25 hp's at the same time as the mana regen. I didn't even consider using Insight, but now that you mentioned it, it really seems like a great choice (I remember reading about it as well). Even a lvl 12 meditation will give huge radius and If I remember correctly the auras might even stack as I will put that one point into mediation anyway. Not 100% sure though.
I'm gonna do some searching now, but if the meditation auras really stack then this party will never run out of mana :afro:
Prayer synergises well with insight, even on a merc :-)
Also, CoS is usually cast by the shadow master (?), which makes it difficult to control.

After a little bittle searching I found what I was looking for and I now know what I'll go for. I'll be using cleansing as my main aura and also I will put one point into meditation for reasons explained later.
My prayer merc will ultimately wield Insight and thus our stacked prayer auras will heal around 50 HP's every other second. My merc will have mediation (insight) for mana regen, and I will use cleansing (as meditation doesn't stack like prayer), but I will put one point into mediation for those early levels before I can get the runes for insight and the weapon as well.
Also this will ensure that I can keep meditation up even if my merc takes the dirt
Big thanks to you Tikadea and waflob, without you I might have never realised how great insight and prayer merc can be :wink3:

10-12-2006, 17:19
Well now I'm really flooding this thread aren't I , but at least this time the timer really went up.
I found out that if my prayer merc wields insight, he alone will heal 50 hps at higher levels. The prayer from my pally will also be added to this, making the heal rate to be around 80 hps every two seconds. :innocent:
It's really not that much, but maybe it will be enough to keep everyone's mercs from taking a dirtnap. Thanks to Nikechs conviction, I also have some customization options available so I could dish out more damage to ordinary targets as well.
I could and will use zeal with high elemental damage weapon to kill stuff, at least while it's effective. I could also take the 20 points out of Blessed hammer and invest them into Holy Shock to synergize FoH, as this would not hurt the healing amount of the bolt, only the magic damage vs. undead monsters. In this variant I would have access to high damage FoH, as well as high healing and undead killing skills.
Maxing the Blessed Hammer though, would make my Holy Bolt very nasty and still keep FoH viable to kill monsters because of Nikech's conviction. Also this route would make me able to perhaps even MF at the crypts / mausoleum hehe..., but all in all I think is the route I'm gonna take.

I won't be using a Shadow either, so don't worry about CoS. I might use it once or twice during Lost City, since the game darkens there regardless, but other than that it tends to bug me, too.
Millenium: You do know that Cleansing and Meditation have built-in Prayer dependant on what you've invested in Prayer, right? Since Prayer costs mana, it would probably be a lot more benefitial to put on Cleansing, even if its just one point, since the Prayer heal carries over and it doesn't cost mana anymore.
I'm STILL unable to decide between Fade or Burst of Speed...

I don't blame you, my stuff tends to be long winded :soapbox:
I'll also take the undead hunter variant, since FoH (even synergized), would not make enough dent when soloing non-undead areas.
Hmm... if Tikadea decides to take fanatism BoS might not be that important, and he will also have lvl 20 vigor, which should make non-battle movement quite easy. On the other hand, fade gives PDR and resists, which might be quite hard to come by for dual claw sin, since finding stuff like Jade Talon is only viable in hell.
Then again, I'll probably use salvation quite a lot when (or if :wink3:) we get to hell... so it really is tough choice. Do you plan to solo or teamplay her outside KTA games? That might be the decisive factor.

i always thought the ias wasnt shared... please correct me!
Hmm... I think it is.
At least http://strategy.diabloii.net/news.php?id=539#Fanaticism this link from the Paladin FAQ gives no indication that the IAS would not be shared by the party. Only downside is the smaller damage. I think something that major would have been mentioned in the guide, and I remember my pally hitting a lot faster with a zealer in the party while doing baal runs :wink3:
You could ask in the Paladin forums though :jig:

Alright, I'm set. Level 15, killed Radament, also got some nice Gorefoot boots off Andy. :D
Question though: Anyone know if the critical strike on Claw Mastery will apply to kicks?
OK... couple of things to notice here:
1. if you guys think the IAS from fana is shared i will DEFENETLY go FANA. ias seems so much more important then that little bit extra dmg.
2. about the super healing: i remember now how it was done. the pally should max prayer, run his cleansing aura (1 point is enough) and wield insight. that way all the aura's stack and healing is pretty nice. i don't know if letting your prayer merc wield insight and you running cleansing will create the same effect. and 80 hp's every 2 secs is nothing to sneeze at, and will make more difference then you tend to think. the lease thing it will do is make sure everyone will enter each and every battle with a completely full life bulb. many people tend to not take a potion yet when there is only a small dent in their lifebulb... and specialy at higher lvls and with BO and OAK that could make a difference of several 100's of life. and even in a battle with some tough guys who take long to kill, like bosses (ancients anyone?), those amounts of life will help a real bit!
3. Dimmu... you died already? sorry to hear that. Did you think of Tagging her now? (if you need help lvling her, please poost here, maybe someone could help you a bit)
4. Millenium... we WILL reach hell... it never happend that we dont. it HAS happend that we dont finish it, but i think this group will be quite strong seeing the builds we are getting with all those shared aura's, BO and OAK. as long as we dont get overconfidend we should be OK.
looking forward for tonight
Tika!

Sorry for the sin, dimmu :innocent:
Also the CS from claw mastery DOES NOT work with kicks, ack.
It's in this assassin FAQ http://strategy.diabloii.net/news.php?id=538#What%20mods%20work%20on%20the%20Bl ade%20skills%20and%20Kicks?
And yes I'll get the same effect by giving my merc the Insight. My merc's prayer will be doubled as long as his meditation from the insight is the highest one in the party. And my prayer from cleansing will also be added to that amount, this is all in the abbot paladin guide, so it's confirmed data
If I'd wield the insight myself then I would regenerate some little more hps as +skills count toward the prayer and I doubt my merc will be having as many as me, but I think the max block and more resists (or skills) from the shield is more important than the 10 more hps healed.
Edit: Fanatism IAS definately works for others too. Just made a pally in SP with the -act5 command and tested it with the NPC barbs on bloody foothills. The difference was like night and day so it's great

Nice to see, that KTA-16 finally got some players. I really needed a break after two KTAs ( that I enjoyed very much ). Wish you all the best with this one.
W00000t... that means i DEFENETLY am going the fana way!
and that also means that we will have to make sure your merc is the only prayer merc in the party, AND that he gets the insight stick with the highest lvl of meditation....

Hehe... actually, my merc only needs the stick with the highest meditation lvl. You are all free to use prayer mercs too, since ALL prayer auras stack with each other. Only meditation and cleansing are overriding.
Just to clarify if anyone wants to use prayer mercs :p
