The Basic Idea:
The general idea is to make no-charm, no-jewel duelers that do not require a huge amount of time to level or gear, then duel them.
Posting a Challenge
Post either a level and "open," meaning any character class, a level and class, or a level and specific build. You will also want to post what realm you're playing on, when you plan to have the character completed, and possibly your D2 account name. You can also challenge a specific person if you like.
Example: Level 25 Amazon USEast - Ready by December 1st - <account name>
Accepting a Challenge
Quote the Challenge Thread and post that you have accepted the challenge. Also include when you plan to have the character completed.
The General Rules:
No Charms (5 spears will be traded between chars to make sure their inventory is empty).
No Jewels.
No Gear in the Stash can be used, IE no Pre-Buff Gear.
No Mercs.
One belt-load of any type of potions is allowed.
No Titles (cannot have the Normal Baal Quest)*
Runes and Runewords are acceptable.*
The duel will be fought in the Blood Moor in normal difficulty. It will be fought to the death. Running to town will be considered an act of complete cowardice, and you will be ridiculed beyond belief. Just stay and die.
*Depending on the chosen level, these two rules may change. This should be stated in your thread.
For that matter, all other rules can be changed as well, but be specific in your post if you want any changed.

I like this idea, but why does the location have to be in the Blood Moor?
I think it would be reasonable and fun to clear out unusual areas for dueling. The Arreat Summit comes to mind. Anywhere would work, really. Perhaps the trees in the Dark Wood could be used strategically. A duel in level 2 of the Act III Sewers would be something new.
Of course, certain areas could give players advantages. Ranged characters would have trouble fighting in the Arachnid Lair. So people would have to consider balancing this out. Two of the same types of characters would be even anywhere. So while a ranged character vs. a melee character in the Arachnid Lair would not be fun, two Fireball Sorceresses going at it could be.
In any of these cases (except the Arreat Summit), players would first clear the map (enemies, tombs, urns, etc.), go hostile, get on opposites of the map, give a signal, and then start dueling.
In public games, this is impossible to orchestrate, which is why everyone uses the Blood Moor. But since we know each other, we could work this out and it might be cooler.
And you would have to walk all the way there while hostile..

That's true, I forgot about that. It would take about two minutes to walk from the Ancient's Way waypoint to the Arreat Summit.
or we could just walk out and be there in 2 seconds at moor :)

Rules:

- Normal status (ie:no destroyer/conq/guardian)
- No Charms
- No Jewels
- No Merc
- All Runes/Gems acceptable
- 1 belt of potions (all potions acceptable)
- All builds are acceptable
- Looter may be present if necessary to retrieve fallen equipment
The Duel:
After exchanging the necessary polearms to determine no that no charms are being used, each opponent will immediately exit town into the Blood Moor where they will fight until the death!
Any returning to town will be considered a loss and the defeated barb must then return to this thread and announce "I AM A COWARD WHO WAS AFRAID TO DIE!"
The victor of the duel will congratulate his/her fallen opponent for his/her valour and then proceed to his/her next challenge (if there is more than one individual brave enough to take up this challenge!)

- The duels will take place this Saturday December 2nd 1:00 PM Eastern
- We will meet in channel Op Arm Wrestle approximately 15 mins ahead of time. Come earlier or later it is up to you. At 1:00 game names will be announced
- You may accept this challenge up until Friday December 1st 9:00pm PM Eastern. At which time you will be considered a Coward for not participating and will not be allowed to join the competition!

About the only thing I miss about all this is making up the names that sounded good with the "slain by" message. Since things sound worse than they were when I gave up I certainly don't miss the game.

yeah i won't last 2 secs in a lvl 20 duel, i say we have lvl 9 duel again but with any class available, it was lots of fun, no charms jewels or potions but you can use any class. so get your lvl 9's ready as well as your 20's.

I did have fun, although i don't think i can do another. The reason being i don't have the stregth to keep making chars and they only get one duel then there trash. In the future i might consider doing it again but as for now it's crunch time in school, and my surgery is healed and im back to work!

y don't u guys do ironman tournaments instead of individual lvling? no twinked characters and everyone lvls to lvl 9 together. Easier for people with no items
but ton of skills that way.

There will be a time and a place for ironmans and i'm sure there will be afew to come. However its a gross misconception that its going to cost you alot of time and gear to make a lvl 20. Put it this way: Treb won the lvl 9 tourney today using full sigons....who can't get their hands on sigons, really.
How long does it take to lvl to 20?

Once there what kind of items will you need?
- some perfect rubies, maybe angelics ring/ammy unless you are a caster and you wanna use eye of elitch and some fcr rings that you can get from doing norm cain
What kind of weapon would you use?
- a sorc could use a leaf....Tir Ral. If you can't get your hands on a Tir Ral you shouldnt be playing hardcore anyways.
- any other char can use a 1 or 2 hand weapon, imbue it and you're good to go. For the lvl 9 tourney today i did some normal cows to find some eth war hammers and then imbued them. Bam! dueler.

- So what! be original. I plan on making 3 different characters. One that i think will be a challenge and two completely off the wall fun chars.

- Possibly. Probably. So what! you won't lose any of the items you invest because there will be a looter present. You won't lose any charms because they're not allowed. There is nothing to lose except the 30 minutes you spent lvling to 20.
However! you do gain 1) a good time competing in a new way with other players 2) experience in the dueling side of things so that for the next tournament you might have a few ideas of what not to do or what to do differently then last time.
I think jugs missed the point when he said he wont be doing anymore because he only gets to use them once and then they're trashed. It's not about getting ears or kills, its about trying to come up with some original ideas that wouldn't normally work in the dueling realm because of all the charms/jewels.
How often can a lvl 20 necro beat a lvl 20 pally? Practically never because of charms and jewels, but in these tourneys you get to experience a variety of other builds and enjoy the creativity of it.
It kinda sucks when you get 5 regular duelers participate and 1 or 2 new guys because those 1 or 2 new guys feel kind of left out of the loop or outclassed when they really shouldnt. If more people took the plunge you'd have a large group of people to pit your original builds against and thats where the fun is.
Jugs also spend some currency on his dueler...lol

I think I've changed my mind and I might give this level 20 business a try. Surely I can level to 20 in a week!
The problem is that I only have 1 copy of D2 installed at the moment so I can't rush myself for the skill quests, so if anyone wanted to give me a hand next time I'm online I would be forever grateful!

i'm doing a paper today and probably all night. Class tomorrow at 10 and then crash for the afternoon. After that I'll be on probably a fair amount tues-sat so if anyone sees me sitting around banana not doing anything feel free to ask and i'll rush your 20 for you and get the necessary quests.

Is there any flexibility here? Turns out midday Saturday isn't going to work very well for me. I can do Friday between get-out-of-work-time and start-drinking-because-it's-Friday-night time, and Sunday later in the day also works, but that middle chunk of the weekend is a no-go.

i think 3:00 sunday is good. any later you begin infringing on sunday evening plans etc.
I traditionally have found early sunday afternoon is the best time for any online tournament. Of course you can't please everyone all of the time.

For a no charm sorc I would expect somewhere between 350-450

She's an assassin, and I don't foresee her having much over 250 life when she's complete.

Yeah I meant Sunday, as I recall I had a druid with 850ish life, low lvl lyc. Depends on what build on the amount of life you will have.
asns can get decent life, but if you're a caster and you go with caster gear, expect to get caster gear results :)

With the variability in opponent possibilities it would be hard for a dueler to correctly assume the types of opponents he or she will come up against and prepare properly.
That being said I do agree. If you win your first duel and then you find up your coming up against John's Fireclaw Druid round two and say "hold on gotta change a couple items" and run off to get a noko, that would be pretty cheesy indeed.
Two options I can think of:
1. All opponents are sent to individual games and then the tournament organizer (helz) will instruct you on which game to go to where your next opponent will be waiting. You won't know who you're going to fight until you get there. This will just take a little more time and a little extra effort on helz part.
2. Work on an honor system and after every duel you must return directly to a designated channel and remain there until the next duel. When it's time to leave you go directly to the new game.

As far as Item swapping goes I agree it shouldn't be allowed. But I'm not sure about the seperate games thing, it seems like it would take away from the fun a bit. Designated areas would be ok, but what happens inbetween fights when you want to go back to your stash to fill up your juv potions? Or is that not allowed inbetween fights either?

Going to your stash in between duels for potions shouldn't be a problem, as long as you don't go to your stash after you find out who/what you're going to be dueling next.
- You can use 1 belt full of potions per duel
- You can reload after a duel
As per multiple games, There are going to be too many opponents to fit into one game so there are going to be multiples regardless of how we structure it. It's likely the structure is going to look something like:

Don't know how many people per bracket quite yet but assuming at least 2 because Kime and I will have 1 char per bracket as you are allowed to make up to and including 4 duelers. (I'm looking at 1 serious one and 3 fun builds to toy around with).

Learning from experience having 4 divisions with only 5 people is not going to work. Seeing PT having to wait for all the duels to finish just wasn't right. This won't happen again :)
HOWEVER! If more people showed up it wouldnt' have been this way as there woulda been constant duels!

wow expac comes out jan 16. if blizzard has brains, (which they should now that they can afford to hire more people) they will reset this ladder for chrismastime, to get more people into their games and heavy advertisements for the expo. if its not out in the next week or two though, expect it late february :(

They'd risk pulling WoW accounts back to D2 I'd think. Anyone who plays D2 knows about WoW's existence and is making an active choice to play D2 over it I'd say... advertising there really shouldn't be needed. Especially not when they're running TV ads rather frequently.

Challenge:
To create any lvl 20 char and be champion of the hill!
Rules:
- lvl 20 any class
- Normal status (ie:no destroyer/conq/guardian)
- No Charms
- No Jewels
- No Merc
- All Runes/Gems acceptable
- 1 belt of potions (all potions acceptable)
- All builds are acceptable
- Looter may be present if necessary to retrieve fallen equipment
The Duel:
After exchanging the necessary polearms to determine no that no charms are being used, each opponent will immediately exit town into the Blood Moor where they will fight until the death!
Any returning to town will be considered a loss and the defeated barb must then return to this thread and announce "I AM A COWARD WHO WAS AFRAID TO DIE!"
The victor of the duel will congratulate his/her fallen opponent for his/her valour and then proceed to his/her next challenge (if there is more than one individual brave enough to take up this challenge!)
Dates
- The duels will take place Saturday January 6th 3:00 PM Eastern
- We will meet in channel Op champion approximately 15 mins ahead of time. Come earlier or later it is up to you. At 2:00 game names will be announced
- You may accept this challenge up until Sat December 9th 1:00pm PM Eastern. At which time you will be considered a Coward for not participating and will not be allowed to join the competition!

I think you're gonna have to scrap this idea kime.
1) there were only 5 particpants in the last one.
2) Multiple chars led to the people making single chars having a long wait period.
3) This was the last tourney, lets mix it up some.
I was thinking of just a simple iron man. Anyone can afford an ironman as it requires no items. People have shown interest in an ironman so lets get it done.
After we have a successful one, I was thinking the next one could be a Team Ironman.

If the latter, count me in. Level to 9 and duel is kind of dull to me though.

In the spirit of the thread I was refering to the Former rather than the Latter.
But to make it more interesting rather than the same old, to organize the people into teams so you have something like a 4 v 4 Free for all and the remaining members of the winning team then have a second FFA to determine the winner within the winners
