How do I make my summon own? and do my sstats have anything to do with the bear stats?

Max it, it's "synergies" and a spirit. If you're going pvm, how would be your spirit of chooise. However if you wanna be a townsummoner, oak would be better since it increases your bears life, making it easier to make smiters kill themselves on your thorns, as you will have to recast bear less often. And no your own stats doesn't affect your bears:)

HOW is not useless in PVP. Oak adds greatly to your bears life. How adds greatly to your bears AR/Damage %. With a merc with the right gear, HOW and a beast BA in your hand your bear can kill almost any chr in like 2 hits. The damage is unreal. That is with the right gear, etc. and the right gear on a merc. but what fun is townguarding. Then there are a few other issues. Your bear can be frozen making it useless and high leachers can leach off your bear (LOL).

how much life would my bear get? would it be better to just max oak sage and then get a beast for more damage / ar IAS?

seems to me that the stats for the bear are lying, my **** dies so fast yet it claims it has 8k or so life

Do a search in these forums "druid forum" about 5 months or 8 months back. There was a discussion on the bear and the potential damage. I can not remember the actual damage numbers but it can get huge with a merc. Ok here it is or at least one thread:
